Can the buildings/land be somehow acquired/used/developed by The College? Seriously. It's right there.

The land and building have to be worth a fortune. Especially with that location.
Then again that pesky flood plain......amazing Rotman's stayed in business as long as they did.

I haven't been in Rotman's for a while but I wonder if it's a tear down. BTW, one of the first cases I had as a lawyer was against Arline Rotman, who went on to become a Probate and Family Court judge. She was a formidable lawyer at a time when there weren't that many female lawyers.

That is a big piece of property. On Google maps, it stretches between 30 Brussels St., and 98 Brussels St. The legal street address is 725 Southbridge. The land area is nearly 13 acres. Two owners are shown, one with an address in Bedford NY; the other with an address in Palm Beach Gardens FL.

For years I would look at the Rotman building. Fantasy: HC would buy it, use it to build a High Tech Center featuring a first class Engineering program and other tech programs. As was commented a while back, engineering is not feasible at HC for a variety of reasons. However the location of the property makes it prime real estate for HC. However what would HC do with it?

I’m not sure what the layout is, but how about put an indoor track and tennis facility in there?

I’m not sure what the layout is, but how about put an indoor track and tennis facility in there? How about a Consortium of the Worcester Colleges as well as the City of Worcester Public Schools, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, develop the Indoor Track and Athletic Complex, similar to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. That would spread the cost among several entities, and be a catalyst to the development of the Southbridge Street corridor to downtown Worcester. Easy access off 290 for visitors throughout New England. www.rcc.mass.edu/reggie-lewis/index.htmlen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggie_Lewis_Track_and_Athletic_Center

Back to the topic at hand. Embarrassing to admit, I never set foot in their door. My excuse was when I was a student, I had no need of furniture. Here's from the T&G (lots of pictures that I can't copy):

Rotmans' joins the history list of former Worcester area businesses - Spag's, The Fair, White's, Denholm's, Al Bum's, House of Doherty, Ziff-Paperworld, Shack's, Northwork's, El Morocco, Worcester Center Galleria, Greendale Mall, Higgin's Armory Museum, Weintraub's Deli, Iandoli's, Argento's Market, Widoff's Bakery, Thomm McCann's (HQ), Jolly Giant, Crown Bakery, Fairway Beef, Webster House, Chopsticks, Moynihan's Pub, Tammany Hall, Maurice the Pants Man, Sir Morgan's Cove, Maxwell-Silverman's Toolhouse, Plum's, Meola's Diary Milk,...
It is sad when local businesses that were were unique to an area close and are no more. These closures are not just business related as they are a loss of local character and identity.

They lost the D-3 Track and Field National Championships after hosting it once because it was such a disaster with logistics.

Taking this large property off the public tax roles would not be popular.

Seeing the trend in Worcester this property will be converted to housing. There is new housing popping up all over the city.

property border in yello property detail, border in yellow aerial view of 'pond' area at far southwest part of the property Appian Way. Stillwater pond to the southwest Brussels St looking east from Appian way Brussels st looking east Brussels st midpoint Brussels st looking west and southwest Looking west/southwest from Southbridge st Main entrance -------------------------- South facades of the old mill buildings proceeding west from College Sq. to Appian Way. The channel for the Middle River appears to have built at the time of the Interstate. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, there is enough land for an indoor track. And for a large parking lot for Fitton Field and Hanover Park. None of the buildings look salvageable for a new adaptive use. One likely could build new residential at the west end of Brussels St., and Appian Way. The elevations may be high enough to be out of the floodplain. No building in the area of Stillwater Pond. Perhaps HC, WPI, and HC's developer, Madison Properties / Kendig Properties might undertake a joint development with the city of Worcester.

Always amazed at how Phreek can post these huge pictures on Crossports and I can only get those dinky little ones on . . . . . and struggle to do that!

Phreek uses a third party site, --of which there are several, e.g., flickr, photobucket, imgur-- and uploads images stored on his computer to the third party site. The third party site stores the image creates a unique file name for the image. Then the unique image file name is pasted on Crossports, and voila, the image is retrieved from the third party site for all the world to see.
One needs to use the BBC Code feature when uploading the file name. This approach is not recommended for sharing photos of family and friends.

If someone can find the funds for Big Dig Part 2 they could submerge Rt. 290 and have a green space on the surface for HC students to walk to and from the new HC buildings on the Rotman's site.
