I was saddened to read today in the Holy Cross magazine that Dr. Lawler passed on July 20, 2022. He was a great teacher and very good man.

I'm saddened as well. I had several courses with him at HC. He was a brilliant man and a great teacher, but also a throughly decent person who was generous with his time.

I took his Shakespeare class. My copy of the Riverside Shakespeare sits in a bookcase next to my wife’s copy. He was a wonderful professor although the exams were unbearably difficult. Each had several passages about which you had to identify the play, the speaker, and some other points. Obviously, if you thought the passage was from Henry IV Part 2 and it was actually from Henry V, you were off to a terrible start

Per Prof. Lawler's obituary those who are so inclined can make a donation to either the Mustard Seed or St. John's Food For for the Poor Program, two local programs doing God's work.

Best teacher I ever had at HC and I had many good ones. He was also a wonderful human being.

I made a donation in memory of Prof. Lawler to the St. John's Food for the Poor Program in Worcester. They do amazing work. In the course of donating I learned that St. John's parish in Worcester is the mother church for both the Springfield and Worcester dioceses, and that the land for the church was donated by none other than Fr. James Fitton. Also, the pastor, Fr. John Madden, is an HC grad and exemplary human being.
