Now that I am slowly getting back to reality after the thrill of yesterday’s dramatic win, we need to talk about the penalties. With our 11 penalties for 118 yards yesterday, there are now 9 teams of the 123 in FCS who average more penalty yards per game than our 77.5 per game. I know we can probably keep averaging 8+ penalties every game, including lots of 15 yarders, and keep winning against Lehigh, Bryant and Georgetown. After that, when we’re playing one of the top 16 teams in the country, it might start to matter. Should we start making this a point of emphasis for the next few games or should I stop worrying about it and accept that that’s the way we play?

Legitimate concern especially with the taunting and personal foul penalties. The HC needs to clean this up.

Chip on the shoulder might be part of the Personality of too many players and embraced by others???
Can and should be fixed but not easy at this point in the regular season-perhaps by the playoffs

The back to back penalties on us in the 2nd quarter for false start and unsportsmanlike conduct on HCBC were some of the worst calls I have seen in a long time. Outrageous there was no false start Sluka was fake hiking the ball and then the ref had his feelings hurt and called one on Chesney. That crew yesterday didn’t have a clue. BAD!!!!!

I mentioned this very thing during and after the Lafayette game. There is a difference between playing confidently and arrogantly, and the separation between the two can be a very fine line. Had HC lost the game yesterday, we'd be talking a lot more about the two unsportsmanlike penalties today that took place at key times. Regardless of whether you think the calls were right or wrong, the officials know how HC plays and will throw those flags if they think it's gone over the line. And the other team will be in the ear of the officials stating the same. The further into the season, the less the team can afford to go backwards with penalties. They'll have to clean it up.

I think we do need to take less penalties, especially of the 15 yard variety. I especially hate personal foul calls.
We had 11 penalties for 118.
If we subtract the 5 yard false start and 15 yard Ches penalty, then the 15 yard unsportsmanlike in the 4th, and the 15 yard unsportsmanlike on the kickoff in the 2nd (after the FG) for a late hit out of bounds on the return, we are left with 7 penalties for 68 yards. Right at our average for the season. We had a D holding on Reynolds in the 3rd that was ticky-tack and a PI on Prince in the 3rd that prevented a TD. Now we are talking 5 penalties for 43.
I do think the staff as gotten a chance to talk to the guys about this and calm down the stupid retaliation and late hits. I was more upset about the questionable calls yesterday. Yes I hate the offsides and false starts, but I didn't have a lot to complain about with our guys.

Only 6 penalties for 41 yards this week. Progress! And Lehigh had some personal fouls and we resisted the urge to get drawn in.

11 penalties for 115 yards in a blowout win of a terrible team. Really hope we can turn off the penalty spigot in two weeks.

We need to tone down the chirping and unsportsmanlike behavior. This is something we can 100% control. Clowning the other team just makes them play harder and refs notice and start involving themselves.
Remember when they were calling flags on #9 on kick-offs? That's just a Freudian Slip.
That being said, the refs this year were haters of epic proportion.
BOGUS holding and PI calls whenever HC rips a big gain on offense.
They are probably just jealous of us. I know I would be lmao

I dislike the chirpy play and the bs that follows
Crush your opponent and play the next down

I dislike the chirpy play and the bs that follows Crush your opponent and play the next down I don't like it either but it's beside the point. When you disrespect someone to their face it just motivates them to play harder.

There were 8 FCS teams in the country who averaged more penalty yards than our 77.3 entering this week. We will move ahead of at least a few of those this week.

Hoping that penalties and/or a missed FG/XP don't loom large in any postseason games.

Hoping that penalties and/or a missed FG/XP don't loom large in any postseason games. Anyone worried about Derek? He always seems to bounce back but had multiple misses last game. One was definitely a low snap. I think we can clean up chippiness and hopefully the procedural stuff is emphasized with our QB, center, and line. But...what about then kicking?

He looks like he is favoring his plant foot and losing his accordion action and leaving things to the right, but that is a guess

His misses were all to the right, but let's see who he does when under pressure. Then he is typically money.

Final regular season stats are in. Five FCS teams had more penalty yards per game than our 80.73. We had 93 penalties for 888 yards in 11 games. If you’re curious, the five worse than us were Sacred Heart, Bethune-Cookman, Morgan St, Grambling and Alabama A&M.

Final two games UNH: 5 for 30 SDSU: 4 for 23
So, we can be disciplined and avoid stupid 15 yards penalties when we want to. Hopefully we can Play that way all of next season. Starting with Merrimack will be a good test in this regard.

Interesting call, or non-call, in the UIW game, speaking of penalties. Hopefully the announcement (down by contact, or the equivalent of that) was incorrect, but the replay showed the NDSU player recovered the ball before it was taken away.
And, they were PL referees!
