The heart, the soul, the man of high school and college basketball. To all he touched you are a better person, if you never met, his brilliance made your appreciation of the game that much more, I just hope he gets to evaluate the hoop talent in heaven above

If anyone is there, it is Tom.

Finally, I was elated to hear the news that the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame elected to present its John Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award to Tom Konchalski, the legendary high school talent scout who was instrumental in the growth of Five-Star Basketball Camp. Tom’s HSBI report was a must-have for college coaches for four decades, but more important, he was one of the kindest, most loving, and most respected figure the sport has ever known. Tom was also my dear friend — I dubbed him The Only Honest Man in the Gym — and all of basketball was saddened when he passed from cancer in early 2021. I know that all of Tom’s friends and colleagues share my joy that his life and legacy will be forever enshrined in Springfield

good ole Herb Magee. Those Philly Textile teams were always tough. Remember watching some great battles with my hometown Gannon Golden Knights. Nice to see him getting recognized.

Quite an honor for Mr Konchalski and I think it is due in part to his influence beyond his brilliant reviews of players: his strength of character and his love for the game, for example

Every player, parent, coach and referee who came to know Tom was touched by his selflessness, caring and genuine personality. it was a gift to have befriended him.

Konchalski’s impact
Casual college basketball fans may not know about Konchalski, but anyone who has worked in the game over the last 50 years knows all about him. His opinions as a high school talent scout were gospel amongst coaches, not only because of his acumen (and prodigious memory) but his integrity. I’ve often referred to him as “the only honest man in the gym.” He had no agendas and no secrets. He was a nice, thoughtful, soft-spoken, witty, considerate, gentle man. He was a worthy recipient of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s John Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award, and he was a slam-dunk addition to the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Through those institutions and those honors basketball fans will forever be able to learn about what Tom did, and more importantly, who he was.
