From the NY Times investigation:
Follow the money!
And to think we had a basketball player who got in trouble for gambling. He just went to the wrong school apparently.

Online sports gambling is a big problem with many young people getting addicted to it. It’s so easy to gamble now and the sites have been very effective at attracting young males in huge numbers to bet on random games. It ain’t healthy and is going to be a problem for my kids’ generation.

I'm assuming they're only trying to hook the non-athletes into gambling, since we all know there is an NCAA rule that prohibits athletes from wagering on any sporting event, subject to a one year suspension For the athletes that do gamble (but aren't stupid enough to get caught), I ASSUME gambling sites won't write off losses for players in the hole but are willing to shave. Slightly different than your neighborhood bookie

Do these companies like Fan Duel extend loans to bet? I assumed you had to fund your account with a credit or debit card or free promotional balances used to hook you before wagering but you couldn't actually owe money to Draft Kings or Fan Duel type entities like you possibly can to a casino if you are a high roller.

Fair point. Probably more like getting buried in credit card debt. And I don't see VISA letting you work off your balance by point shaving. Still doesn't affect the fact that, unless rules have changed, NCAA athletes aren't allowed to engage in any sports wagering. Yes, I know it happens all the time and you have to be pretty stupid to get caught, but I think its still against the rules
