The USA looked like the stronger team today but missed on a few clear scoring opportunities. They showed they can play at this level, but like any sport they may need a few breaks. The announcers saw at least two times where English players could have been given yellow cards but they got nothing.

The US outplayed England. At the final whistle the English fans booed their boys.

Very good game today for the US. A random observer would not have known which team was the one which was heavily favored. Iran will be without its captain who received his second yellow card of the tourney today and is thus unavailable for the next game. Should make the US heavier favorites than they otherwise would have been. Still have to play the game. I am certain Iran would like nothing more than to eliminate the US. Not only that but Iran is playing to advance as well with a win. And they also get in if they tie, I do believe (unless Wales beats England and I have no clue if that happens what the tiebreakers are).

Definitely need to be aggressive early. Canât get into the second half in a 0-0 tie and let Iran play for the tie.

Still waiting, Soccer continues to grow in popularity in the U.S. For example, the MLS had a higher average attendance in 2022 for the regular season than the NBA had for the 2021â22 season. Ratings in the U.S. for the English Premier league are strong and continue to go up. Etc. The US versus England World Cup game last week produced a TV audience in this country of over 20 million people. And World Cup ratings in total are up dramatically.

The US had some stunning defensive lapses. Overall, Netherlands was a better team.

They were certainly more experienced. The 3-1 final was not a true indication of Howell the USA played and IMO they have a good future.

Hard to feel too badly about our performance this year. Future seems bright as most of the current team should still be in their prime in 4 years.

My sadness on the USA loss to Netherlands is more than offset by Holy Cross' wins over UNH, CCSU and Northeastern, not to mention 2 hockey wins over Air Force. I'll get over the soccer loss . . . . . . OK, already over it!

1. My home town is in deep mourning after the Brazilians lost. 2. If Netherlands/Argentina was a nasty game. Cannot believe no one was red carded and/or collected a second yellow (which becomes a red). I understand why perhaps one doesn't want a team gaining a big advantage by having the other team play short; but how do you allow players to come off the bench and get in a shoving match (and at least one Netherlands player did it TWICE, once coming from 50 yards away)? Ejecting those players are "freebies", they don't count against the number of people you can put on the field.

Ejecting those players are "freebies", they don't count against the number of people you can put on the field. Because the ref also allowed the Argentine player who incited that fracas (I think it was Paredes) to go relatively unpunished. The tackle alone was worthy of a yellow, and then firing the ball directly at the Netherlands bench should have been a red by itself, and easily another yellow. There is no way Paredes should have been allowed to remain on the pitch after that display, so only punishing the Netherlands players who reacted would be grossly unfair.

Impressive, especially on a Sunday morning, 7 AM on the west coast. But this could be a one off. With the US team expected to be a strong side, how will the ratings be for the Womenâs World Cup this summer ? Australia could make for difficult timing for US TV sets.

Deciding the world championship by the kicks at the end of the game makes as much sense to me as deciding the World Series via a home run derby after the 7th game is tied through 12 innings

I have never felt comfortable with awarding a championship on penalty kicks...at any level and certainly not a world cup.

France vs Croatia in 2018 drew 12.8 million on Fox and another 5.32 million on Telemundo as it was held in the normal summer time. www.sportsmediawatch.com/2018/07/world-cup-ratings-decline-fox-telemundo/
