fillfitton -- no doubt, a resurgent Lehigh program would be a key step in the direction of the PL gaining respectability. The "HC-and-no-one else" schtick is getting old.
I would be down for a Worcester-Keystone State rivalry between the two that would compare to the HC-Bucknell hoops rivalry of the 2000's. Not a bad thing when our fanbase is able to get at least somewhat interested in one of the Pennsylvania schools that form the geographic core of our league. And vice versa. When Lehigh gets good again, I hope they bring a ton of supporters to our stadium, whether it be Fitton or Polar Park.

Would be great once they each make the commitment to athletics equal to academics-- not greater than but equal to academics. We can all walk and chew gum and be healthy
Honestly I am more concerned about the spiritual part of the Holy Cross experience and that is never discussed and that is controlled by the students, faculty, and Administration

Year or two of overlap with HCBC on the Johns Hopkins staff.

HC (and to a lesser extent Fordham) can't carry the PL in football forever. For sure, Colgate needs to resurrect what was once a strong program. If Lehigh and/or Lafayette can also improve, so much the better. And I'd be keeping a close eye on the CAA for potential recruits to the PL fold.

These are all quality academic institutions first and foremost and none of them is ever going to let the proverbial tail wag the dog. Nor should they. Don't know what you mean by the "spiritual part of the Holy Cross experience...that is controlled by the students, faculty, and Administration", so can't comment.

Equal means the commitment we should make as a school given the number of students we have participating in our 27 sports -easy to accomplish,
All we do at Holy Cross should be about excellence in scholarship, athletics, the arts and community service. If excellence isn't the standard we shouldn't do it..

Kit Hughes has been doing a pretty good job thus far, IMO. How he handles things going forward will be telling. Support for the Crusader Athletics Fund will be a key way to help him. I have no idea at this point whether he's doing a good job or not. The recruiting of a new men's basketball coach will tell the acid test for Mr. Hughes. Nothing else will matter. Here's hoping he emerges triumphant, like Napoleon at Austerlitz.

I obviously agree with you...assuming you're not implying that, say, academic excellence should take a back seat to achieving athletic excellence. Which I don't think you are.

But each element of the Holy Cross education deserves a commitment to excellence

Let’s not assume that every AD is less smart than HC’s ADs and anticipate that everything might not go perfectly during a contract period and might even have a buy out clause that both parties accept up front. Say what you will about TG’s coaching but he’s a pretty savvy guy especially after getting axed mid-season at Holy Cross. He can read the tea leaves and this would have been no surprise and suggest to you that he was probably well prepared for this and likely so was Lehigh. Maybe we do need to have a business school at Holy Cross or at least hire ADs with that educational background. I cringe when I think of what might be in Nelson’s contract or, more likely, what is missing in it. Gilmore got "axed mid -season" after that fiasco in the Yale Bowl for a reason. He was plain awful and even HC management couldn't take it any more. As I've said before, it was a major disappointment that said management didn't fire him immediately after that disaster against Fordham at Yankee Stadium. Don't know why there are so many Gilmore supporters on this board. He may be a great guy...I can't say as I never met the gentleman...but coaches live and die by their results and his arc was definitely in a downward trajectory for a number of years at HC. As Leo Durocher put it, nice guys finish last. Sad, but so often true.

"commitment to athletics equal to academics" is vague. "Equal means the commitment we should make as a school given the number of students we have participating in our 27 sports" is rather confusing. Why not say what one means? Namely, HC should commit to excellence in all areas. Sounds good as a marketing slogan. However the devil is in the details. Expect HC is more willing to sacrifice excellence in athletics if required to achieve excellence in academics. For example in admissions, course work, time allocated for practice as opposed to time in the library, great reductions in class time among others. In other words academics is first. Athletics is second. Agreed?

They are equally important because together they make the Holy Cross experience. If it is solely academics there are many schools that will out perform us in the rankings and we will always struggle to meet standards set by others. It is only a holistic approach to education that Holy Cross can return as the premier Catholic liberal arts institution We aren't the school we once were and we need to forget about chasing schools that aren't now or ever been part of our peer group. Those in the PL are also not in that grouping. I argue we can have multiple peer groups depending on the buckets of academics, athletics, arts and community/spiritual and we can seek to be excellent in each bucket. We are no longer all male and the premier Caholic liberal arts college Few Jesuits on campus Curriculum has changed Daily mass is no longer required And the list goes on

I was on the team from 2007 through 2010 and I'm super grateful for the 4 winning seasons, but Gilmore's lack of success was definitely not a case of "Nice guys finish last" He could be quite the hater at times.

I can only assume this will entice top talent. I have family that graduated from Florida State, and legend is that Burt Reynolds became a Seminole only because his recruiting coach told him they recently transitioned to co-ed and the student-body ratio would be way in his favor. That being said Holy Cross should be an all women's school except for football players. We'd win the national championship every year

It's not Penn's OC, but rather Yale's OC --

Impressive that two former Yale OC's are now head coaches in the PL - Conlin (Fordham) & Cahill (Lehigh).

Any updates as to where FHCTG could be heading to next?

Any updates as to where FHCTG could be heading to next? I've wondered this, too. He's got enough contacts that I'm sure he could latch on somewhere as a defensive positional coach, if he wanted it. Maybe stepping outside of football for a year or so wouldn't be the worse thing for him.
