MZ playing very tentatively at this point not even looking for his shot from outside. Maybe if he continues to get regular minutes he'll look to be more aggressive. PB does not even look at the basket from the perimeter despite SOV's proclamation that any questions about his shooting have been put to rest. I think we're going to have to live with the ups and downs of AT's shooting as he is taking basically uncontested shots many of which come late in the shot clock. I thought other than the poor shooting AT played very well last night. The defensive sequence late in the game where the Albany point guard tried to get by him three times and each time was denied was a thing of beauty to watch. He along with MA and RC are tough as nails and are providing great senior leadership. As far as the minutes go I hope hoops is right and it won't be a problem as it is becoming more and more obvious that the top 6 players are going to be playing 85-90% of the minutes.

Stats show that MZ is, indeed, taking very few shots. We are early in the season and he has not played a lot of minutes, but you can see that he's either reluctant to shoot, has not gotten open, or has a different assignment this season. But, again---still early in the season Field Goal Attempts per 40 Minutes 18.5= CLS (has only played 13 minutes so draw no conclusions from this) 15.5= RC I'll guess this is among the highest numbers we'd find for the past dozen years. Of course, his key assignment, I think, is to take a lot of shots. Compare to 13.6 LY 11.3= MA Compare to 10.2 LY 10.2= MH compare to 11.1 LY 8.6= AT compare to 8.9 LY 7.0= KC on the surface this appears too low to me. Compare to 10.5 LY--would expect him to get back to 10.0 or higher 6.9= PB 5.8= JF 5.3= MZ--seems extremely low (of course he has not played a lot-small sample size) for a "shooting guard". Compae to 10.4 LY

MZ would get a solid red light from me for 3's.
Last year 20 of 61 for .328 beyond the arc. So far, this season 0 for 4. You might say that 33% is not that bad but as a team last year we shot .326 from 3 but that included our biggest and most unsuccessful gunner, AT who shot a woeful .256 and KC an almost equally poor .284 from 3. That brought the team average down. At best, MZ was "average" for the team.
Zig was supposed to be a great long range shooter but did not show it last season or so far this season.
Now, I am hoping that he proves me wrong and demonstrates he is finally approaching his potential as PB has done this season. No question MZ looks gunshy out there and often passes up open shots. Is that him or CWC making those decisions?

I think we have to give the green to Zig, Kentucky. While he's 0-5 on the season, he's a shooter. If he has an open look, I don't want him hesitating. Zig was hesitant last night. Not sure where to go with this Ziggy for a while seemed like the 8th man in a 7 man rotation and that might make one hesitant. It's been a few games since he's taken a 3. I'm not sure if that's hesitancy or rhythm of a particular game. Lately, from a shooting standpoint, it's been all about the give and go for him, cutting hard towards the hoop after making a pass from near the top of the key. Last night, I only recall the ball going to him twice on that cut. One time he was held so the ball sailed out of bounds because Ziggy wasn't where he was supposed to be (he drew a non shooting foul on the play) and once the timing was a little off resulting in a kind of awkward reverse lay up attempt Short story, I see no hesitancy in trying to work that give and go in the last three games. I don't know about 3 land. Although last year he was 0 for a ton in the Assumption game, yet come regular season continued to launch and had reasonable success. Can't speak for the soph Ziggy, but the freshman version definitely had the Heinsohn view on shooting - not something that tends to becoming gun shy.

Notes - UNH has outrebounded each of its last four opponents...including Providence. This is an experienced team (3 seniors / 2 juniorrs starting) that beat HC last year in Worcester 73-69.
Here are some notes from last year: HOW IT HAPPENED:
The game was tied at 6-6 early on, before the Crusaders went on a 9-2 run to claim a seven-point lead (15-8). Holy Cross was still up by six (22-16) with 8:54 remaining in the first half, before New Hampshire scored eight straight points to claim its first lead of the night. The Wildcats later used an 8-2 run over the final five minutes of the half to take a 34-30 advantage into the locker room. The Crusaders trimmed the margin to one point (40-39) early in the second half, before New Hampshire scored the next 13 points to take a commanding 53-39 lead. The Wildcats were later up by 12 (65-53), when Holy Cross used a 12-2 spurt to close to within two points (67-65) with 2:52 remaining. The Crusaders were still down by two (71-69) in the final minute, but New Hampshire’s Camara grabbed an offensive rebound, then Jaleen Smith hit two free throws to conclude the scoring.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Holy Cross tied the school records for both three-point field goals made (15) and three-point field goals attempted (35), in addition to tying the Hart Center record with 15 three-pointers made. The Crusaders previously made 15 three-pointers on Jan. 11, 2006, at Army, while attempting 35 three-pointers on Jan. 17, 2015, at Lehigh. The only other time a team made 15 three-pointers at the Hart Center came on Dec. 5, 1988, when Assumption accomplished the feat against Holy Cross.

The Wildcats hit for 57% from the floor (53% from behind the arc). They hit 69% on FTs). The Crusaders hit for 47% from the floor (43% from behind the arc). It may have been lost at the FT line where HC hit only 57% (4 of 70). [That UNH FT Defense is indeed impressive. ] There were only 21 total fouls called in the game (8 against UNH and 13 against HC).

It looks as though UNH will win or lose based on the play of Tanner Leissner. From the UNH site: Tanner Leissner, a junior from Converse, Texas, led the men’s basketball team to a 2-0 week with wins against Detroit Mercy University (86-70 at home, Nov. 23) and Winthrop University (65-60 on the road, Nov. 27). Both games were part of the NIT Preseason Tournament. At home against Detroit Mercy, Tanner scored a career-high 31 points on 9 of 13 shooting while nailing a personal-best 12 free throws. The 6-foot-7 forward also grabbed eight rebounds. At Winthrop, a Big South program, Tanner led UNH with 22 points and 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the season (13th career). It marked the first time all season he led UNH in both points and rebounds and the third time he led the 'Cats in rebounds.
To get a sense of the UNH preseason NIT opponents, Detroit Mercy is currently 1-6, while Winthrop is 4-2 with wins over Manhattan and Illinois. That 65-60 win over the Eagles was a big one for the Wildcats.

SOV I said PB couldn't shoot other than making layups, after he made a 3 and a jumper in one of the subsequent games you said that should put to rest the theory that PB can't shoot. Fortunately PB himself knows his limitations and does not look to shoot from the perimeter unless there is no other choice. By the way, I am very pleased with the way PB is playing and he is contributing far more than I thought he would.

After losing by 5 to UNH and by 3 to UMass, Temple beat Manhattan, Florida State, West Virginia and St. Joseph (PA). That is quite a run, so the UNH win over Temple is indeed a big one. The Winthrop win is probably UNH's second best victory...still a big win (that many folks may not appreciate if they do not know of the Winthrop Eagles).

Winthrop is a consistent NCAA contender in the Big South and was just coming off a win over Big Ten member Illinois. If I'm they are the favorite to win the Big South this year.

One thing you have to remember when discussing HC vs UNH is that last year's game was only the 3rd game of the season for HC with a new Coach and a new system.
We opened on the road at Marist with a win, then played at Brown in a loss and then came home to a loss with UNH.
We are way ahead of where we were last year at this time both offensively and defensively.
I'm looking forward to tomorrow night's game!

Serious Question: This OOC game against UNH is a prep for "the real season." Here's a serious question for the experienced bball coaches on this Board. Why shouldn't CBC say to MZ tomorrow "Matt, tonight I'm going to give you lots of minutes. This is what I want you to do. Every time you are open, whether outside the 3pt line or inside, I want you to shoot. I don't care if you shoot 5, 10, 15 times or whatever. I don't even care how many shots you make. I just want you to shoot. Understand?"
