I don’t know about coaches salaries but the two sports are vastly different- almost nothing in common between the two

I see similarities between all the sports that try to hit or kick a puck or ball into a net.

If a new coach is a possibility then open up the checkbook and pay him. Holy Cross should have a top 50 program and a team that will bring fans to the Hart Center or DCU.

For a perspective on head coaches salaries, from the 2016 NCAA annual report on revenues and expenses. The NCAA discontinued publishing this detail publicly starting in 2017. For all FCS schools, median men's head coaching salary, median $ Basketball $279,000 Football $267,000 Ice Hockey $253,000 Lacrosse $164,000 Baseball $114,000 Soccer $102,000 Wrestling $118,000 All other sports are under $100.,000 ------------- Div I, without football Men's hoops head coach salary, median value was $413,000 Men's ice hockey head coach salary, median value was $412,000 ---------------- For FCS football in 2016, Three programs had generated revenues that exceeded expenses 120 programs lost money, median loss was $2.4 million For men's basketball at FCS schools in 2016. Three programs had generated revenues that exceeded expenses. 120 programs lost money, median loss was $995,000 For men's basketball at Division I schools without football, in 2016 Five programs had generated revenues that exceeded expenses, median net revenue was $1,742,000 Ninety programs lost money, median loss was $1,573,000 Ice hockey and soccer are the same sport. One on a carpet the other on ice. A whole bunch of strategy to try to stick something in a net a couple of times a game. Yet hockey pays two and a half times as much ?!? At a handful of schools hockey is actually a revenue producing sport, and they also play 2x as many games...probably the basis for the salary disparity despite being nearly identical sports

At HC, "ticketed" sporting events are football, men's basketball, women's basketball , and men's ice hockey. Anyone who wants to watch the Crusaders play soccer can just wall up and watch the game for free

See? We just need to get rid of football so we can increase Brett Nelson's salary by $134K a year. And, as an added bonus, our hockey coach could make an extra $159K a year, statistically speaking. Raise your hand if you are in favor.

....................or Tom Crean (on Ralph's coaching tree) A sexy name on the surface, but a big hard pass. 47-75 (15-57) at Georgia in four years. Yeah, UGA is a tough job in the SEC, but so are a lot of other schools in that conference where basketball plays second fiddle to football. Crean has not once been affiliated with a program that is 1) in a small conference like the PL, 2) located in New England / northeast, 3) had to recruit and manage a team of kids in a high-academic environment, 4) road buses to just about every game in conference Do we want to hire a guy that was fired from his last two jobs? Not to mention, we'd really have to open up the checkbook to get him. There are much better candidates than Crean.

If the decision is taken to move on, some interesting names will surface if the school expresses a real commitment to helping the program succeed..

Crean would be a home run hire -- one of the very, very few possible home run hires we could make.

Ralph had been fired from his previous Power 5 job.
Crean's background is such that he would quickly understand HC.

If you have the chance to hire Crean & opt not to do so...yikes. He's a phenomenal coach. Recruits well, develops his players and wins. He'd provide tremendous exposure for the College. Sign me up!

There's another branch of the RW tree that understands HC.

Although I anticipate a coaching change for next season, maybe the school made a real commitment to helping football succeed by not paying two head basketball coach salaries this season.
It's hard to know how much flexibility HC has in it's operating budget. I'm sure costs are increasing throughout most of the departments due to inflation while the endowment distribution may shrink from the last annual one.
Heating costs alone will be in for a big increase this winter I would expect. The white smoke from the big smokestack is not to telegraph a new coach unfortunately. It's to keep the students and staff warm.

Top 50 program? Where do you suppose that Holy Cross get the $3M+ annual salary that would be required for such a program?

Ralph had been fired from his previous Power 5 job. Crean's background is such that he would quickly understand HC. Coaches want to coach Tom Crean's salary at Georgia was $3.2 million. How much should Holy Cross pay him? Maybe a hard cap of seven times Chesney's salary so as not to ruffle any feathers?

Cream’s overall record 403-306- .568% He was fired from Indiana, where he had an overall winning record, and recently from Georgia. His most successful years were at Marquette. At Indiana he had 4 NCAA tourney appearances out of 9 years, 3 Sweet 16s. Those 4 appearance came in his final 6 seasons there.

What is a reasonable ceiling these days? Top 100, Top 150? Take the power 5 schools, AAC, Big East and WCC schools; shake out the BCs of that group; and you already have 50.
