HC is the "before" of a dating coach reality style TV show. We need a new wardrobe, new hairstyle, we need to hit the gym, we need confidence coaching, we need speech lessons, we need to pick up an interesting hobby or two... we need to love ourselves before anyone will love us. If we go right to the bar looking to score the way we're setup right now, we're going to go home very lonely.

Are you kidding? This guy coached at the highest levels on the planet for college basketball, and doesn't need to work again a day in his life. Why not hire Pat Reilly? Why not reanimate Red Auerbach while we're operating in fantasy land. “Why not hire Pat Reilly?” This is my nomination for post of the year.

Responding to bbc: In saying that the biggest mistake possible was bypassing Daigneault, aren’t you implying that he was a guaranteed success? You make these silly grand pronouncements and then object when you get called on them. Do you expect us all to just accept everything you say as the settled truth? Yes and yes.

A thread was started ONE MONTH into Nelson’s tenure that he was over his head. Why would Landry Kosmalski come here to deal with that? The last 4 coaches who took this job had their head coaching careers end. I know Carmody retired, but his results weren’t getting him anywhere. One solution to this problem is a 8-10 year contract for $750k+ per year. Think TPTB will do that? I think not. We’re not going to attract anyone decent for $300k and a membership at Worcester Country Club. We desperately need to change the cycle and do something different. SoV calling for people’s heads in year two and rallying alums around that ain’t going to cut it. It was apparent early on that the guy was not qualified to be a college head coach. Did you not see that? Seemed that way. Also seemed like he had bigger fish to fry in year 1. Luckily the next head guy won’t have to deal with some of the same issues.

Last night was tough to watch, but I continue to root for HCBN and the staff to turn things around. I hope they can get it done. I’ll be the first to admit that things are looking grim and it seems we’ve taken a step backwards this year.
If they can’t turn it around, and we end up with a head coach vacancy, I will submit one name, and one name only, as my preferred choice:
Ralph Williard.
If Fran Dunphy can come out of retirement to save his alma mater, RW can do it as well.

Historical perspective on Mark Daigneault - at least from my memory
When Coach Kearney was relieved of his duties and Mark was down in Florida, Coach Willard offered to return to HC and was going to bring Daigneault with him as a succession plan. No one - including Coach Willard - was thinking Mark Daigneault was ready to take over a D-I program. He was a star in the making, but he wasn't ready yet. Fr McFarland vetoed that plan. I wish he hadn't
5 years down the road Coach Brown was fired. Mark Daigneault's name was thrown about Crossports, but by that time he was no longer in Florida. His pro career had started and he was coming off his first season as the head coach of the Thunder's D-league team. I have no clue if head coach in the D league to the Patriot League is a step up, down, or lateral. I doubt HC went knocking on a pro coach's door. Conversely, I'm sure Mark knew there was a D-I opening 25 minutes from where he grew up. IF he had any desire to go back to college he could have called. I kind of think that ship had already sailed when Coach Carmody was hired
Four years later, when Coach Nelson was hired, Mark was starting out as an assistant with the parent club. If the ship hadn't sailed in 2015, it was long gone by 2019
Any realistic thought of Mark Daigneault had to be in a window that coincided with the middle of the Coach Brown era

With the roster that we now have and the league we play in, it will be very difficult to get a good coach. I know that money talks but with the current situation we will have a hard time finding the right person if we let BN go after this season.

Let me get this straight. In this thread some are saying the team and its play sucks and in the same thread some of these folks seem to worry that with a new coach the players they say have no talent will leave. Earlier some complained about players being "encouraged" to leave so we could upgrade our talent and others complained that there was no real talent there in those who have come in. Has HC stopped teaching logic, or have some of us simply stopped using it?

I can't remember if I took a logic course which leads me to believe I didn't. Maybe that's why your last post lost me on a turn or two.
But let me put a stake in the ground and people can react and maybe clarify their positions.
1. I believe that we have some players with some talent but none that are threats to be future NBA stars (or benchwarmers) 2. Most of the players seem to be below the already-criticized low Patriot League standards 3. Coach Nelson does not seem to be developing the players he has, helping the good players to be better and the poor players to be at least adequate 4. Coach Nelson has not, by any stretch of the imagination, been able to create synergy where the overall team play exceeds the individual talents of his players 5. If he were to depart, willingly or otherwise, I believe that many players would stay for a variety of reasons including a) whether they like Nelson or not, they probably don't like losing and might figure the next coach will improve their prospects for winning; b) they aren't very good players and not a big market for their limited talents 6. I also believe that some player would leave probably before a new coach is named, again, for a variety of reasons including a) they like Nelson and think he got a raw deal; b) they think their talents have not been recognized and would do better at a different school; c) they are afraid whoever the new coach is won't recognize their talents 7) whoever succeeds Nelson, I hope he/she does not run off any of the current players. One of my strong suspicions based on just the unprecedented number of transfers when he came on board was that while we know some left of their own accord, I believe a number were run off the team and that has not been the Holy Cross way. Even if it takes a couple of years (no, NOT 4 or 5 years!) to get the plane flying level again, I prefer that than the constant rotation of new players. Chesney has had fewer transfers than Nelson with a team that's 4-5 times larger. I wonder why?
Bottom line: if Nelson leaves there will undoubtedly be some transfers. Probably not wholesale departures, but some. However, if he stays for 10 more years, he's already established there will be transfers every year. He doesn't seem to know how to keep what he's got.

IMHO, RW is a guy that coached at all levels (high school, college, NBA assistant), is well respected, and has had success in his career. His ex players think highly of him. He has the ability to get the most out of the players he inherits and can recruit great kids. What do you guys think? I’m surprised nobody has brought this up earlier.

I really don't know Ralph other than the casual hello and Coaches' Night questions and email debates about black uniforms but that said, I'd be surprised if a guy who is 3 years older than I am and presumably financially sound would want to come back and coach permanently.
However, I could see Ralph coming back on an interim basis if Kit gives Brett the ax and be a placeholder coach until Kit can find the right coach . . . . with heavy input from Ralph. You know, a half year of bailing out alma mater to partially atone for his greatest career faux pas, helping out Ricky P and leaving the Crusaders in the lurch. There's no Fr. McF from preventing his return.

And so, I again say that while we don't need to know the details of a coach's contract, I hope that especially if Kit decides on a chancy coach that he will put in a cheap buy-out clause. Pay them a bigger salary per year but a pittance if we part ways. And, no bonuses or automatic extensions of contracts if they win X number of games unless that excludes any teams that are not D-1.
In the FYI category, I looked again at HC's federal 990's. The most current ones are '17-'18, '18-'19 and '19-'20. The basketball coach and Athletic Director are on them but not the football coach which tells you something right there. Of course those years don't include Brett Nelson but gives you an idea what ballpark he's in vs. Bob Chesney. Since these forms are public records, I'm not posting out of school.

Coach Daigneault pursued the job quickly, but Regan completely misdiagnosed what went wrong that year and said he only wanted candidates with head coaching experience. Regan and Coach Willard had talks about him coming back, specifically with the often-discussed on Crossports transition plan in mind. Fr. McFarland considered bringing Coach Willard back to be a non-starter. I personally think the ship sailed on him coming back once he left in 2010.
