6 years is a long time for a mid career pitcher with past.injuries. No doubt. The glass-half-full view is that he has very few innings on his arm relative to most other 30 year olds who have been an All-Star the last two years.

Rodon to the Yankees on a 6-year deal. History of injuries but very good the last two years. We shall see. Alex Speier reported that Scott Boras was eating Red Sox appetizers at the Yoshida press conference while finalizing the Rodon deal with the Yankees.

What the heck is going on with the Red Sox? They have a rabid fan base. It is a wealthy franchise, plenty of money. In other words the Sawx are one of the premier franchises in baseball. I don't get it.

Dansby Swanson becomes the latest to significantly lessen his chance to win a championship. 7 years with the Cubs. A bad team.

Mets pull of a STUNNER overnight. Their luxury tax penalty alone is $111 million, nearly the amount of several team's front-line payroll. The Mets payroll + penalties in 2023 will have them paying nearly $500 M total to salary obligations.

I can’t stand Correa so glad he’s across town. He’s like A-Rod to me. Just don’t want him on my team. But he is a heck of a player for now. Another contract where the last several years will be rough.

As a Mets fan, I was not a Correa fan since he cheated, but to me he is still not the level of ARod cheating or arrogance

Mets pull of a STUNNER overnight. Their luxury tax penalty alone is $111 million, nearly the amount of several team's front-line payroll. The Mets payroll + penalties in 2023 will have them paying nearly $500 M total to salary obligations. Listening to High Heat this afternoon and Alanna Rizzo said that the luxury tax penalty is actually higher than the base payrolls of 8 teams. Haven’t verified that but it seems possible. I’ve been saying for years that the sport that needs a salary cap the most (MLB) doesn’t have one and the sport that needs it the least (NFL) has one. The NHL did it right in the early 2000s and suffered a fully-lost season to get a cap. Since then, there has been great competitive balance without team payrolls (both comparatively and totally) getting completely out of whack. The Scott Borases of the world will point to the fact that there hasn’t been a repeat WS champion since the ‘99-‘00 Yankees and that the Yankees have won only one WS since 2000 as a rationale for not having a cap (along with his unspoken desire to see no cap so that salaries keep going through the roof [along with his %]). But, as the Mad Dog said on his show, while having a top payroll doesn’t guarantee a championship, it virtually guarantees that the team will be one of the 12 playoff participants with a chance to win the title, an annual edge that the Pittsburghs and Miamis of MLB don’t have. The owners had their chance in 1994-95 and didn’t hang tough. Now with Mr. Cohen on board, they’ve reaped the whirlwind.

From Yahoo:
The Arizona Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Guardians, Kansas City Royals, Miami Marlins, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Rays and Washington Nationals are set to open the season with payrolls under $111 million, per Cot's Baseball Contracts. Granted, those figures might change over the next few weeks, but as it stands, the Mets will pay more in luxury tax fees than those [10] teams will pay players.

Those are precisely the teams that are likely going to collect chunks of the $111M from the Mets and others. Salary floor is just as important as a salary cap for those bottom-dwellers.

Yep. One way or another the money they get should be earmarked for improving their teams.
Only 3 of the 10 made the playoffs or at least came close.

Dansby Swanson becomes the latest to significantly lessen his chance to win a championship. 7 years with the Cubs. A bad team. Michael Caine was a great actor but he was not above taking roles in bad movies for a big paycheck. He was once asked if had seen one particular bad movie he was in, and he said no, but I've seen the villa in Spain it paid for.
