If Albert said "two decades ago", I think the tweet was fairly accurate. The survival of the program at the end of the tragic Dan Allen era was definitely in question.

That's probably what he meant. "A decade ago" was 2012 and that's when we were just starting to come down the mountain from the zenith of the Gilmore era. And we'd just begun adding scholarships.

I wasn't on Crossports or anything similar at the time but I was friendly with a retired T&G sportswriter who never heard a rumor he didn't repeat, which made him great to talk to. He never mentioned a hint of Holy Cross considering giving up football. So who were the people questioning the survival of Holy Cross Football? It never rose to a vote by the BOT did it?

There was some talk on this board about it a long time ago. I thought that T&G sportswriter John G(?). printed every rumor he heard.

I wasn't referring to John Gearan and don't know him but did read his column. He struck me as an instigator of sorts such as making the case that Peter Muldoon was a better QB than Doug Flutie (he made an interesting case) and being all over Larry Bird's strained relationship with his daughter. It seemed to me attention from the Boston press and beyond, even criticism was like currency to him. I suppose it was tough being a full time sports columnist in a small market.
Gearan has written interesting pieces for Holy Cross Magazine over the years.

NY, this guy has been dogging Sluka since summer/fall 2021. The same tired old critique every time. Have you seriously not noticed? Do folks that have been around athletics their entire lives seriously not know how/when to spot a helicopter parent? I sure as hell do and several have and still exist on this board.
I very, very, very much doubt that Siderman's dad knows about a Greek Orthodox athlete who played for HC in the last century, and also knows the player's number. Particularly the number. Except that many regular posters have Kaftan MOP Circle under their name here so it shows up several times on every page of every thread here.

I’m not sure who the guy is but one thing is for certain. He’s clearly and idiot and a clown.

We've had others over the years. Some stay around a few years, some fade away quickly.

Refused to jump from that ship of fools (athletics, not the other things Father did in his tenure at the College) even when it was clear the ship be sinking.

I realize that, but those in the Kaftan Circle don't have Kaftan's uniform number: 12. The only way to learn of the uniform number is by finding an old photo of kaftan in a HC uniform, which was how I learned that his uniform number was 12. Having read a sample (10 percent or so) of his 300 or so posts, I would say he is a hard, even harsh, critic. But he also displays a familiarity with Northeast football that would be very untypical I would think of a father living north of Los Angeles.

Technically in terms of QB skills and technique Peter was the better QB. His brother Casey played for BC

Ship of Fools? Fr. Brooks was not a fool nor were his views on the role of athletics at Holy Cross foolish. One may disagree with Father's views on athletics but to imply his views were foolish does a disservice to this great man and to the school he loved so dearly. He is largely credited with being among the most impactful presidents, if not most impactful in the school's history. It would not surprise me in the slightest if someday long after we're gone HC's athletics more closely resemble Father's philosophy than they do today. Of course we will never know.

Father Brooks set back HC sports decades. Glad we are not going back to that vision, or lack thereof.

We are all entitled to our opinion. Fr. Brooks had a comprehensive vision of Holy Cross. One may not have shared in his vision but it is wildly incorrect & unfair to posit that Fr. Brooks did not have a vision for the future of his beloved alma mater Looking at a factual overview of HC & its athletic program might prove enlightening to some. Some look at the past through purple colored glasses. Look at the record. No sense in airing this again. Fr. is long gone.

Unfortunately times have changed and his dream and vision for the future is unlikely now and forever. doesn’t make him right or wrong, it does say how much he loved Holy Cross, wanted it known for its rigor and excellence, and with all his resources he wanted to protect the image and reputation of our institution. those times are no longer, and we need to allow President Rougeau to deliver his vision, and pray that it is correct for today and the future. don’t get me wrong Father and I disagreed, but I respected his passion and commitment to the excellence of Holy Cross and its academic future, athletically, well that is a conversation that would requires hours of conversation and consumption of great food and beverages God Bless

I was fortunate--blessed actually-- to have taken Father's Christology seminar my senior year. His wisdom, not just on Theology, was profound. I knew Fr. Brooks' as a shrinking, somewhat frail 80 year old. Obviously I knew he was our former, poweful, President, but I couldn't imagine his physical stature as he was such an older gentleman. He was kind man but spoke with a kind of quiet yet commanding voice. Everyone listened when he spoke, but more often he would nod as we students debated and quizzed each other. One thing is for sure, I had a hard time believing that this is the man who KO-ed our chances at playing in the Big East. After some study and reading (starting with Fr. K's book), I find it very disappointing (especially since Frs. Swords and Brooks realized the team was bringing in $200,000+ in the early 70s and they couldn't drop football) that the decisions were made about athletics. But...it is 2022 and new opportunities abound in the future.

However, a quick Google search of “kaftan holy cross” will get you to a #12 pick in seconds.

I did try and separate Father B's overall vision for HC and his athletic vision. Who knows, maybe mm67 is right and HC will be playing WPI in football someday. Hope not. I am pretty sure HC won't be playing scholarship basketball or scholarship football without scholarships save for its endowment increasing tenfold and its tuition not matching that.

Whether I agree or disagree with an administration is not relevant to this underlying fact. My attachment & support for ""The Cross" is not dependent on any decisions made by a particular school leader.

Others here will know the specifics bettah than I, but the era of "dropping football" was more in the immediate afternath of the hepatitis season, upcoming coeducation etc in the early '70s...I don't think there have been serious discussions about dropping the sport since then.

Hc87 I played in the early 70’s right after the hepatitis season and there never was any talk about dropping football at Holy Cross. My class was the second class with women and we played some serious football.

I did as well, albeit play and contribute would be an overstatement
Never a valid conversation, but some on the board immediately used it as a reason to be anti-athletics
