I advise all to ignore this thread and let it fall to the second page...
This is how a boring guy like Foley gets his jollies. Best to ignore.

On top of that he and his men have more to accomplish at Holy Cross
The press conference was great and I believe SDSU is glad they found a way to survive and advance

President Rougeau had the President of UNH as his guest at the UNH-HC game Rumor has it they discussed UNH joining the PL. Maybe start a poll on whether the smiles indicate a done deal.

Maybe they can join and we can leave and find a path to success for Holy Cross athletics

Great divergent, PP. Brilliant move.
This doesn’t surprise me that UNH wants out of the CAA for football. That conference has got to be very “south heavy” with recent additions. If I were URI, Maine, UNH and Albany, I’d love to find an alternative league.

Does UNH have the academic gravitas to be in the PL? Wouldn't PL standards & rules such as AI, 5th year players, number of scholarships present a problem? State schools offer a wide range of academic choices to a wide range of students. They are an integral, important part of the landscape of higher education. Would think Richmond, W&M (public) and Villanova would be a better fit for the PL. But, doubt if any would want to adopt PL standards & rules. More likely UNH might have been trying to add HC to the CAA. We wouldbring a lot of academic prestige. Personally, It appears HC has found the correct landing place in the PL.

How many people on this board actually or honestly believe the PL is where we belong
We can start a poll
If the response is in the affirmative I would encourage all of us that feel our head explode begin to think about real investments for something we care about, because if supported....
Never mind you know that I think the PL is a joke being played on alums and students we need out now

Some schools in the league don't have the gravitas you mention and that is the joke people accept- a mistake at the beginning and ridiculous today Define our future ladies and gentlemen- the PL is not an answer but a myth

efg72 Your passion is palpable. Before you lead, check to make sure you have an army behind you. From an older perspective I don't know any HC alums at least those who still follow HC, who are unhappy with PL. Most are quite satisfied. In fact never heard anyone in my diminishing circle call the PL a joke. You must feel like Sisyphus interminably pushing that rock up the hill. Peace.

Unless the PL decides to abandon its principles, there’s no chance of UNH even being discussed.

I certainly feel isolated I just don't see the value the schools in the PL bring to us.
They are Nice schools academically Few are in our peer group for admissions Few are committed to the three pillars of a Jesuit education- mind, body, soul None outside of Fordham and Gtown care about athletic success The league is a participation league designed to satisfy Title9 requirements
That is why we have Army and Navy for non football sports
It makes no sense for Holy Cross to be a member and I just don't buy the argument you are known by the group you hang out with at the club
I would feel much better being part of schools like Richmond, Nova, William and Mary, UNH, URI, Fordham, Colgate, Elon, and Fairfield.
In reality they are much more like us, albeit not a select group of academically focused liberal arts schools-no schools are unless we go NESAC
That is why the measure should be the opportunity for excellence in performance across academics, athletics, and of course our spiritual commitment to our fellow man.
Every time this gets raised I come off in a less than positive way, so I apologize, I just want to get our future right so it is sustainable and builds the long term value for all of those experiencing the greatness of Holy Cross.
For those I offend -sorry but ask you to be open to what is needed moving forward as I continue to press those making decisions impacting the future of our great school
If my life record with these issues is reviewed I will succeed, however this is a much different case and I feel as I lose more each day than I could hope to gain.

IIRC, there was discussion 7-10 years ago about UNH joining the PL. I think this was after scollies were were re-introduced, and URI was considering dropping football -- that's the timeframe I remember but could be wrong, and UNH ultimately decided to take a pass because of the AI. ------------------------------------
Holy Cross does not want to join any conference where the majority / great majority of the schools are public universities. Holy Cross is at too great a financial disadvantage, not only because of its relatively small enrollment, but it can't compete financially because its cost of attendance is so high compared to public institutions. Compared to the University of Texas at Austin, HC spends nearly as much on scollies as do the Longhorns, and Colgate spends $2 million more than the University of Texas.
University of Texas at Austin's 'profit' on football in a COVID year was $50 million.
HC's athletic program operates at a substantial loss, and the conferences that Crossporters would have HC join for football would only result in am even greater loss than present. Affiliation in a higher ranked FCS conference would only increase the loss. (Yes, joining the Pioneer League would cut HC's football expenses.) Richmond has cut men's sports and it has a significantly higher endowment than HC. Villanova's finances are salvaged because of the recent success of men's hoops. Georgetown loses its liturgical vestments on men's hoops, which is why the school is becoming more secular, and securing funding from an Arab state to help the balance sheet. .

Then cut the number of sports we offer as Varsity sports and do 5-10 sports the right way We don't need to offer varsity sports unless we can fully finance and offer great opportunities- as I said we offer sports that we can barely say we are participating- enough - a search for excellence is the future

The AI and redshirt/5th year is insane It will change for the Pl or it will lose two members Let each school decide who is the best fit for the needs of the school and what he/she offers to the individual school I have first hand knowledge of a HC grad, hall of fame performer/ leader, and current CEO, who had test scores well below a normal AI requirement for the PL/IL but graduated with a 3.5 GPA. He had a 3.9 GPA in high school The AI is comprised of SAT scores and GPA. A crude calculation below. Using an online AI calculator, an unweighted GPA of 3.9 and a combined SAT of 1025 is an AI score of 178, which is ten points above the AI floor for the PL. It is even above the floor for the Ivies.

And while I have 3 Hoyas in my house, Georgetown, at least in my view is a flawed model based on a decision to become a global institution. It took the bait and lost for the future. If I say more it will come off in an unintended way as political

The "problem", as I see it from afar anyway, is that HC has based its enrollment today on being part of the Patriot League...about 25% of kids at HC play a varsity sport in the PL at HC....it's one of our biggest drawing cards today,

I can confirm the following: UNH was invited to join the PL. One PL AD at the time thought it was a “done deal.” At the last minute, UNH backed out. The reason they backed out had to do with the PL’s football policies (both AI and redshirting). ——————————— Mr. PP has frequently commented about how HC is not inclined to join a league with New England “land grant” universities. What is interesting, however, is that it had no problem with a land grant university (UNH) potentially joining the Patriot League back in 2011/2012.

HC is stingy on scollie money for the Olympic sports, stingiest of any PL football member., The NCAA requires a minimum number of sports. If you want more money for football and hoops, cut men's and women's ice hockey.

I don't want to cut, I want to add to athletics but prioritize the investments I would cut administrative expenses and faculty salaries in excess of $175k unless they teach more than 3 classes
