No games for 6 days....
So let's play Coach......You are the coach of the 'Saders ,What would you do in the next 6 days to help this team?
I'll start, I would work on defensive footwork in the m2m... teach side to side slides, lead with the front foot pointed in the direction of movement, drag the trail hand keep the lead hand up...I 'd work on help side D...one foot in the lane, head on a swivel, see the ball and the men you are guarding...be ready to help and recover to your man... play passing lanes, look for tips and steals..defend the pick and roll, jump out and stop the dribbler with pressure, double team him, help side D picks up the roll..Double the ball in the low post, from the top and weak side, even the weak side hihg..
Rebound, box out, find 'em feel 'em, and ride 'em....
Offense, attack the lane, get to the rim as often as possible, when the lane is clogged up, pull up and shoot the 12 footer (Bo needs to do this!) Go to the rim and rebound! Play fast, push the ball every time...5 guys run! Posses the ball, don't let it get knocked out of your hands! Play inside out, pass it to the post, move to the open spot for the return pass. Move to open spots on the court! Cut HARD. Rebound a missed shot! (Going to the O-board makes the defense play defense on every man, they can't help as much....Be ready to catch the ball all the time!
Change Defenses! M2M, zones, some FC press both man and zone..trap the ball, run and jump...BE HARD TO PLAY AGAINST..
Play every play like it is the last possession of the game..
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF..
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL CROSSPORTERS AND FAMILES!!!!

Nice job, Coach. Even with 6 weeks prep, this would be a huge challenge. With Christmas tomorrow, you may have 4 or 5 days of practice. Shooting prowess cannot be taught in 6 days; neither can years of bad habits be unlearned

Are the problems PRIMARILY level of talent or lack of fundamentals? They go hand in hand..Good fundamentals make a player better, so they add to a players talent..When J Floyd was a Crusader, Coach Carmody use to say he couldn't guard anybody as a freshman, everybody went by him, BUT he recovered and blocked their shot.. Talented guy who got better when he learned to play fundamental basketball... If this edition of the Crusaders did a better job with fundamentals of good basketball, I believe they would not have the losses they do. When a player is fundamentally sound, he doesn't get beat on D easily, and he doesn't turn the ball over... Fundamentals can be learned, the assistant coaches should be helping every day. Is there enough time in the practice schedule to teach all the things these players all the things they need to know? One or two of the assistants could be in charge of some fundamental every day on every drill. Little things, focus on them everyday until they become a natural movement..Stress what is important to the team game...When I coached, one rule I had that we used ALL the time was to always pick up the ball with 2 hands...Gain possession and then make a move...When a player would scoop up a ball with one hand in a shooting drill, we'd stop the drill and run wind sprints, maybe only one or two, but we got the players to understand how important it was to possess the ball first....Little thing, that can really help a team...grab a rebound, 2 hands, catch a pass, 2 hands grab a loose ball on the floor with 2 hands....Defensive slides, getting to the player when (or before) the ball arrives..you have to know where the ball is and where your defensive responsibility is at all times... A better understanding and use of fundamentals, IMHO, would make this a much harder team to defeat...Do we have great talent, no..Is it good enough to to be a 500 team? I think so, in the PL at least. and if they are healthy....

I would just put all the Crusaders of the past on a zoom call with the current team. Just let each person talk about their time at Holy Cross playing basketball. I think motivation is lacking on this team.
Homework assignment is to read the Jack the Shot book especially the chapters about him at Holy Cross.
Buster Sheary dive on the basketball as well. Also wear a suit change it up!

To me more about fundamentals and basketball IQ. Without the basic fundamentals and understanding of the game it is difficult to improve.
Talent matters but everything is compared to ….

Defense 1. More switching between defenses 2. More concealment of defenses 3. Increased trapping 4. Increased full and 1/2 court zone presses 5. On defensive rebounds make quick outlet and run, all 5 guys get down the court in transition
Offense 1. More screen the screener and set plays before getting into whatever offense this actually is 2. Sharper, faster, constant ball movement 3. Drive hard to the cup and get to the line or drive and kick out for open jump shots 4. Decreased use of the dump down to the low post for big man 1 on 1. It’s played out now.
That’s just the first few things that come to mind.

As I've said all along, I am no coach. But how many fans have actually coached?
Nevertheless, I will take my stab at providing some feedback.
The big issue now for him is the length of the roster. Can't blame him for the injuries to Louth and Rabs (do they have to look at the floors again, by the way?). However, he is responsible for the 10 guys that are available. And, if he does not trust 2 or 3 of them to give them regular minutes, then I would say asking for things like pressing, trapping and going for a fast paced style is going to be extremely difficult to pull off. I like the idea of driving and dishing to perimeter shooters, but Dorsey appears to be the only guy with that skill from what I've seen. I say let Lewis sink or swim, put him in for 10-15 minutes for the next 3-4 games and see what happens. What in the world is there to lose at this point by giving him a real chance?
They already turn the ball over way more than they assist on field goals. I shudder to think what will happen if they kick it up a notch. Personally, I think they should do whatever they can to shorten the games, but they really don't have the personnel for that either (like good passing or protecting the ball). Without a big man to defend at the rim, I'm not sure how they keep guys like Records from dominating inside either.
In short, it looks like they are screwed. I sure hope I am wrong, and am rooting for a post Christmas miracle.
Merry Christmas!
Sincerely,
Ebenezer Scrooge

As I did with most of my HS teams, I would spend about half of the practice time(not counting specific film breakdown) on individual skills: 1- shooting form drill A, shooting with the shooting hand only, in close, 5 spots. Emphasis on elbow in, follow through. B. Shooting with both hands. Same 5 spots. Emphasis on pushing the ball through the guide hand, proper rotation 2-pair drill- shooting off the pass, top down to the baseline , bottom up to the elbow. Change after 3 shots at each spot, catch and shoot, no dribble; catch, shot fake, escape dribble to right , shoot; catch, shot fake, escape dribble to left, shot. Rebound your last shot, switch with partner. Emphasis on correct passing form for straight and bounce pass. Shooter must show the shooting hand as target, Small group competition on various spot shooting. Goal of 10. Each group counts their shots. Verbal enthusiasm on all competition drills Partner Free throws. 1 and 1
Individual Ball handling drills Change the position on coach’s saying change, or whistle Circle pass around head, back, knees. Circle around each leg, figure 8. Quick touch ball between legs, 2 hands in front, 2 hands behind Maravich drill. Ball between legs. I hand in front, 1 hand behind, reverse hands. Count the touches as coach times 15 seconds.
Stance drill: knees bent for all 3 positions. Eyes on rim A. Coach says,“Stance”, ball on right hip, “Floor”. Ball on floor. “Shot”. Ball just off shooting side ear. (Shot fake)
2 ball stationary dribbling Shoulder height, then on coach’s “change”, balls as low as possible Simultaneous, then alternating Circle around leg, both directions, Alternate balls to figure 8s
On the move 2 ball dribble jog Simultaneous, then alternate. zig zag, between cones.
Single ball dribbling. Stationery, then moving. Vary cross over, inside out, between the leg, around the back, spin, fake spin. Zig Zag between cones.
Partner Free throws. 5 at a time
Defensive team stance, quick feet while jumping left, right. defensive slides: slow lane 1 reach step. Outside foot moves first(very important). Then inside foot (catch up step). Increase to 4, then 6 steps. Team slide on coach’s hand direction: slide right foot back, left foot back(emphasize quick drop step) right foot forward(attack step), left foot forward. Vocal Enthusiasm on all team defensive drills.
All this to be done at the start of each practice.

Good God; I would hope D1 basketball players know all this already. Maybe not? I’ve done my share of reading about basketball coaching, watching, and coaching younger teams, etc., and I came of age during the heyday of the Big East, North Jersey basketball with St. Anthony, the Hurleys, and Seton Hall, and what has always worked in that world was being an aggressive, obnoxious, pressing, trapping, disruptive, defensive team - constantly switching coverage, guarding the entire court, making teams feel uncomfortable and out of sync, not allowing them to get into their half court offense, forcing bad passes, getting lots of interceptions, tips, deflections and then getting up the court for the easiest shot possible - the layup. On offense constant movement and passing, driving and kicking out until you either get a lay-up, get fouled, or hit an open three. Lot of read and react, flashing, back cuts, low screens. Wear down and break the will of the other team. The high ball screen is great but you have to have the right athletes for it. I think it’s overused and for HC, I’m not sure we have the kid of players who can catch that pass and finish at the rim consistently.

Problem #1: a dearth of talent within this program that we haven’t seen since Bill Raynor.
This team just isn’t very good, X’s and O’s aside. Nelson largely whiffed in the portal this past offseason. There’s a reason the bench only plays 20.9% of minutes (357th in D1) — just not much there.
With Rabinovich and Louth gone, and Lewis and Wilbar seemingly banished to the bench (why didn’t Lewis travel to SHU?), I don’t really think much coaching is going to change the trajectory of this season.

I would have let them go home after arriving back on campus the 22. Come back by evening the 26th. The OOC was a disaster. Give them a couple of days to reset.
At this point, the skill development for this season is what it is. Go hard in practice the 27 and 28 and do a glorified walk-through the 29 (obviously depending on travel schedule the 29).

On play #1, I could see Batch making a killing off of something like that.
With play #2, how about Octave (bulkier/stronger than Bo, able to absorb contact)?

Don't know, but if they could make them in at least 4 out of every 13 games they might have a better record than the current 3-10. I'm just curious if these type of wrinkles can be added to the offense right now.

If you have a healthy Octave, a stronger Montgomery, or a more offensive-minded Dorsey, perhaps
In terms of the skill, I don't believe Nelson has successfully recruited players that give us that complete offensive game or for most of the roster the defensive mindset to play man-to-man.

One of Nelson's biggest faults IMO is his stubborn use of the same defensive and offensive schemes each game.
HC has to be one of the easiest teams to prepare for. You know exactly how Nelson is going approach every game.
I'm not saying that using an occasional 1-3-1 zone or a 3/4 court zone trap defense is going to make this group of players into a winning team.
But it certainly is worth a try.
The question I have is a basic one: is Nelson just stubborn or, worse, does he not feel comfortable teaching other than basic MTM defense and motion offenses?
