Nah. It was the better coaching. 137 already had predicted it. Let’s give him credit where credit is due.
Though I think he sort of put it not that Brett would do a great job but only that he’d beat the low level of Davis in a close game and it turned out to be a close game.
Anyway, “WE’RE # 1!” (for now)

O, Lord, how we can largely relate to that! ....but still the win was a pleasant surprise.

Something that has not been mentioned is the refs changing the foul from the Bucknell big, Screen, who was not near the play, in the first half after Davis protested. I believe that replay is not allowed there. I think I had not seen that before. Good of our color announcer to pick it up. Some victimized coaches would have strongly protested. Did Nelson ?

While congregating in the lobby post game saw Nathan Davis chatting with some Bison folks. He seemed pretty relaxed and smiling a bit. Bison137 won't see this, will he? No. He doesn’t visit after losses (or during football season.)

Gave up an easy basket inside The hook was pulled before the ball went through the net A long season with a short bench is a bad thing. Three or four Subs can give you three to seven minutes each, even with mistakes, and give your first si or seven some rest In another universe without four years to harden opinions that hook could be considered good coaching. I just hope Wilbar gets more chances to do things correctly. He strikes me as a project but you can't coach 6'11" and he has a decent combination of mobility and sturdiness. Sometimes you don't get both in a big at the low major level. More sturdy than Lewis and more mobile than Rabs, I hope he can be coached up and become a good contributor during his time at HC. I respectfully disagree on his mobility. He jumps slowly and is very slow to react defensively. Also, watch his rebounding. When he gets a rebound, he brings it all the way down to his waist and is often stripped in traffic.
Definitely a "project", but with limited upside IMO.

What was there not to like about today's game? Just one game, but it was nice to actually ENJOY it. Lot's of pleasant surprises all around, starting with the crowd (had to be at least 1,000, and there was some energy). The guys really pulled together; was that the best half of defense in the Attack and Serve era (first half)? I was worried they would run out of gas, but they had just enough. Kudos to DiMarz for calling for ramping up the D! I'd like to think some of the missed threes by the Bison were due to our guys rattling and rushing them a bit. We also managed to fool the Bison twice with phony shot clock countdowns - once we sped them up into a rushed shot, and the other time slowed them down for a shot clock violation (or close to it). Dorsey does seem to be developing some on court swagger. GG is just a beast. While congregating in the lobby post game saw Nathan Davis chatting with some Bison folks. He seemed pretty relaxed and smiling a bit. Bison137 won't see this, will he? The defensive effort, including rebounding, by a very undermanned and undersized group of 6-7 players, was pretty remarkable. Kudos to the coaches and players. They definitely emptied the tank yesterday.

I've felt a bit uncomfortable about a small lineup, but I think they are just going to have to embrace it (seems like they did for one day). They could really use some solid inside play at both ends, and unfortunately that is what SW seems to struggle with the most. I personally wouldn't mind seeing Kirkwood's minutes ramp up a bit. Hasn't been spectacular by any means, but he hasn't been making any glaring mistakes (at least that I can see). In terms of where to play him, I just think they have to throw positions out the window at this point. Just have 5 guys ready to play as hard as they did yesterday, and shuffle minutes as best they can. Hopefully Kenney is back soon, to make it a little easier to manage fouls.

Go to :59 for a cameo appearance by NAD. Don't blink, you'll miss it! Oh, yeah, lower half of a guy who stayed to the end of the game wearing his lucky Reunion cap.

Kirkwood made a very nice pass yesterday to someone for a layup. He is probably going to experience some baptism by fire over the next two months.

Kirkwood seemed to play well in the one game (UIC) where he was on the follow for 10+ minutes. In total he has played 64 minutes 11 rebounds 1-1 on 2 pt FGA and 1-3 on 3 ptrs, so taking very, very few shots 2-2 from the line 4assists and 3 turnovers 3 steals 2 personal fouls--small sample of minutes but that's good for a freshman
I'd like to see more of him

He almost exclusively plays only when a regular is in foul trouble. He looks primarily to throw a perimeter pass when he touches the ball, does not look at the hoop

Is that on him or is he following the coach’s direction?

For most of November he wasn't the foul trouble guy - he was the one step ahead of the walk on's guy. Now he is getting spot minutes in the mix. Especially when someone is unavailable

Is that on him or is he following the coach’s direction? Trying to help the team without doing anything out of the ordinary..I think he will be a solid player at HC, and will grow into more time on the court as the season progresses..He is a very solid fundamental player...Doesn't hurt the team when he is in there!

Interesting in the interview Dorsey didn't practice all week with hamie issues.
No Rabs, Coulibaly, Lewis, Kenney, or Dorsey. Capron and Piwko must have been playing a little more active role with some on court coach participation in 5 on 5 drills

Some guys have had appearances that were noticeable in a negative way. In terms of giving one of the core guys a few minutes rest, I'm OK with the guy who doesn't stand out with big plays as long as he doesn't stand out with bad plays. Kirkwood has been that to this untrained eye

I remember back 50 years ago after Kevin Stacom transferred to Providence, Holy Cross had basically a six man rotation and would use Larry Haley (walk on from intramurals?) in that role. Remember Donohue in one of his coach speaks saying that he just wanted Larry out there like a can of peas, taking up space. If I recall , he rarely made any mistakes.

If you're shut down for the year, not unreasonable to think you go home for Christmas. I assume the team is in a hotel since there's no food on campus. Not paying to put Coulibaly or Rabs in a hotel. On the other hand, Rabs can pop up to Hart from home a lot easier than Coulibaly I disagree, but can see that perspective. If you're on the team, I think you should be at all team activities. It will be telling if Rabs is on the bench Monday.

My apology to Rabs in that case. Louth can't jump either. Better than the other two guys in some respects (not shooting), but "hops" isn't one of them.

Pretty spot on Starters were Grayson, Schnurr, Doyle, Grentz and Venne. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/holy-cross/1972.htmlMalcolm Moulton missed the first several games; Haley and Schone Malliet got time in his absence. Haley was more of a contributor. Then, when Stan Grayson got injured and missed 8 games, Moulton started and Haley played a lot as the first guy off the bench. Or maybe those roles were reversed, can't remember that detail. Backup center was John Budris. A 7 footer, not a player, God bless him. If you had to rate Jack Donahue as a coach, going 15-12 with that roster was one of his better coaching jobs.
