Attendance- 686 Ugh Looking ahead Some factors are sustainable, esp the defense with limited fouling Unsustainable- 13 threes(highest since ?) by 5 different players in 28 attempts. We may take 28 again, but will rarely make 13. Opponent’s 14 offensive rebounds for only 9 points. Teams, such as Colgate, may snag 14, but will score more than 9. HC’s 14-24 (58%) on twos. Unlikely to be done very often. Today we benefitted in how the game was by called by experienced referees-imho PL referees would have had us in deep foul trouble by halftime- again just an opinion Agree. Not only were two of the refs experienced, they were very solid, power 6, deep NCAA tourney refs.

Ky, I doubt anyone outside the team can answer that.

It looks like Kirkwood is earning more trust from the coach, while Wilbar seems to be going in the other direction. Kirkwood himself did not have any numbers to speak of, but being out there at least helped CBN manage the foul situation. We talked about it on another thread, but Kirkwood does not shoot -15 minutes today with no attempts for example. As discussed before- is it due to his reluctance to shoot or because coaches have told him not to shoot? 79 minutes of play with 4 field goal attempts is amazing Similar situation to Dorsey when he came on board- no idea why

Ugh indeed. Blame people like me. Things have been so bad for so long that it never occurred to me to brave the traffic and problem parking in downtown Annapolis to think of attending. Congrats to the team for a nice win.

This is not excuse making, but rather just why it’s basically impossible to build a consistent winning program when there is so much roster turnover every year. Our top 5 of Gates-Bo-Octave-Batchelder-Dorsey is a well above average pL group if all playing up to their capabilities. But depth and consistency are going to be major issues without being able to keep guys on the bench engaged in the program enough to improve and stick with it, and needing to rely so heavily on a Freshman (very talented player, but still a Freshman).

BBC Christmas season is still around so i will say for sake of argument all you put forward is true, what i dont understand is the change to defensive attention and execution that appeared after Christmas, or the improved spacing and better movement without the ball offensively Not sure why or how it happened out of thin air as nothing like it has been seen under Nelson’s leadership But will take the change, hope it can continue, and we can survive a short bench without injuries Regardless, all involved deserve credit for the two game performance

Very surprised to see the score after watching the first half. The team must have read Dave’s Christmas poem and HC45 post about doing the picks and stepped it up! Nelson has beaten Navy before. But this time on the road! Keep the three point shooting going and the Crusaders will be a top 4 seed. Roy Williams was at the game.
Do I still want a new coach next year. Yes I do. 🙃

I had thought that myself trimster (the RJ comparison). Very similar style wise I think. To his credit, Joe stayed out on the court by himself before the game (after initial warm ups) to shoot a lot of 3's by himself. It didn't help him on Friday, but it sure did today! While I don't think Octave is a great 3 pt shooter (32% for his career), he is miles ahead of RJ in that category, During his 4 years at HC, Evans shot 26 for 138 from three (18.8%).

But he is well behind RJ in driving, drawing fouls, finishing, rebounding at both ends and defending. Possibly passing also. Basically the style of play comparison is far fetched. One third of Joe’s FGA have been threes. RJ did not come near that. Could Octave play a key role on a nationally ranked team ?(such as UConn for RJ )

Santa must have visited the Hart Center after Christmas and adjusted the lineup and fixed the offense and defense for Brent. I was looking in the stands to see if another coach connected to Crusader basketball was in the stands
I figured it out
Cooz and Chesney ran the practice before their photo op last week.
Just kidding everybody

I put the red light on for RJ pretty early in his career—still he was an outstanding player for all the reasons hoops cites above

I concur with a lot of the comments re: the improvement in defense these last two games. Footwork of the guys looks much improved, doing a better job of staying in front of their man. But also seeing good switches and recoveries. Maybe a function of the quality of PL opponent, but the defense looks more fundamentally sound nonetheless, something we haven't been able to say much during the BN era.
I figured the lights-out 3-point shooting wouldn't last, and it didn't. I also expected a bit of a late-game fade that never really materialized. Perhaps having a few more bench minutes helped keep the starters a little fresher down the stretch. But also perhaps some confidence from the Bucknell game enabled them to finish strong, too.
First 2-0 start in PL play in 11 years. Did NOT see that coming.

If no one wants to say it, I will Nelson outcoached the veteran DeChellis Fair enough Coach gets credit for the last two games, just as he would get blamed if the team lost- not sure I would say he out coached anybody, but his team certainly outplayed Navy👏 What I am trying to sort out is how the rubbish we have seen for 3 plus years on both ends of the court, especially on defense, has changed so much over a short week, during Christmas break, and repeated itself in the second conference game. Is it coaching, player pride, or both? Nice win and good start to the conference season Whatever it is, we'll take it. The last 4 days have been a breath of fresh air and then some.

Including the link to the Capital Gazette story below.
Decided to make the last-minute trip up from D.C. to Annapolis and glad I did. Real skeleton crew on campus with the Middies on break and the federal holiday (bookstore, chapel and Naval Academy Museum all closed). Team was really resilient and didn’t “fade” except for the final few minutes of the first half. Navy forced a lot of deflections but we looked cool, calm and collected down the stretch. Octave was on FIRE from beyond the arc. Outstanding win!
Side note: Alumni Hall has fewer concession options than Hart. Slim pickings!

Not only were two of the refs experienced, they were very solid, power 6, deep NCAA tourney refs. But they ARE Patriot League refs as seen by them WORKING a Patriot League game. They just needed a game probably on an off-day and the PL don't get Clark and Rutecki much because the other conferences pay more. Clark worked the St. John's at Seton Hall game on 12/31, UVM at UMBC on 1/1, and HC at Navy on 1/2. Rutecki worked St. Louis at St. Joe's on 12/31 and did not work on 1/1.

Terrific win. One thing of concern caught my attention: even though we are playing with essentially no "bigs", this team really doesn't have any excellent ball handlers. The press that Navy put on in those last few minutes was really a problem for us. Thank God they had to foul to stop the clock because we were getting trapped all over the court. I think the same thing. No matter how much we improve in terms of cohesion, shooting, defense we'll be out rebounded consistently and without an outstanding ball handler (who shoots FT's well) it will be difficult to hang on down the stretch. The pluses are that we are an improving team in a stinky league (Colgate excepted).
