in the games/parts of games i have seen, the match up has been far more effective than the 1-3-1. we have not been able to replace EG on the baseline of the 1-3-1 Agreed - and the 1-3-1 wasn't very effective last year either until Eric was installed on the baseline at the very end of the regular season. He wasn't there when we played Maine last season at the Hart, and the Black Bears had no problems instantly recognizing and effectively attacking it then - as if they had been preparing for it extensively in practice. Which makes it puzzling why we chose to rely on it last night.

well, i just saw the first half and after Maine drained one of their many 3s, we abandoned the practice of automatically playing the 1-3-1 after misses and went to a matchup, which is played after makes

I think the team is dramatically improved versus last year but our analysis of it has been skewed by three agonizing losses--games we could have won. We do have to look beyond the stats to make a determination on the team's ability to close games out, but just looking at the offense and defense we see great improvement . . . Defense= #165 with 102.8 points per 100 possessions Not sure I agree that we are seeing defensive improvement at all (our defensive points per possession actually ranks us 209th, btw). It's at least debatable. Just to clarify, KY Crusader has accurately listed the HC "adjusted" defensive ranking - which adjusts for the offensive efficiency of a team,s opponents. That is the only defensive efficiency ranking used by Pomeroy. I assume the #209 ranking is an unadjusted number - although Pomeroy's unadjusted ranking is worse.

Save for the barrage of threes that Ryan Bernstein hit in the first half, we allowed 35 points over the final 30 minutes of the game. Maine couldn't do anything inside the arc (6-20 FG). We also forced 19 turnovers last night. The defense wasn't the problem. Karl Charles having ostensibly the worst game of his career, and Champion struggling to find his shot yet again was what lost us the game.
I hope that last night's game jumpstarts Zig, who I thought played pretty well.

again, only seeing the first half, what primarily got us behind by 14 was the incessant missing of close shots, many unguarded, by multiple players, not just KC and RC

This is insane
This was MAINE; agree dwelling on the negative doesn't make sense, but it makes less sense to explain it away.
This was a terrible loss. UNH was a terrible loss. The way we lost to Monmouth made it a terrible loss.

The play that sealed it for me was when two HC players had a chance at an uncontested (by Maine) defensive rebound and ended up knocking it out of bounds. With that possession, HC had a chance to tie or take the lead. Instead we fell behind by 5 when Maine got the ball hit a 3. What were they thinking? Were they not aware of where their teammates were? It was hard to watch. Even as HC Came back - which was a strong recovery for a time, I was not sure HC could finish it with a win. Just a short time ago, I would have felt confident they could get it done. We really need a win at Quinnippiac!

I was someplace where I couldn't get video. For those who watched the game, any thoughts on LeSann? Literally nothing other than minutes to learn from the box score, but it would be interesting to know whether or not he looked lost out there, rotated well on D, etc. The kind of evaluation you need an eyeball for CLS looked like he was auditioning for the movie Being There.

It did follow a blown lay-up by Maine, but it happened because 2 HC players tried to take the ball from each other with no one from Maine nearby. The Maine players were already moving up court to defend when the ball was lost by HC.

The synapses are not connecting well today, I guess, but I have no idea who "the elusive Mr. C" is. Send me a PM if this is a secret of some type or to cover how dense I might be.

I think it would be appropriate for somebody to ask Carmody about TC's status at Coaches Night next week - understand if he chooses not to answer, but the question needs to be posed.

As a guess, what if the information we desire is not be something to be opened up in a public forum. If some information could be embarrassing for a player or the school or the team, why must it come out in public? If you (or ncaam) needs to know, why not speak with the coach privately - one to one?

It's a long season. Coulda/shoulda had wins with Monmouth and UMass; had a couple road stinkers with UNH and Maine. It's a tough time of year - exams coming up, long road trip to Maine, the season seems endless. These are student athletes who played the last two games flat. They didn't forget how to shoot or play defense! . Sometimes that happens - I recall when I attended a game in Fairfield watching a loaded RW team going against SHU this time of year and stinking up the place. This is pretty much the same team that made everybody happy here nine months ago. The staff is pretty good, they will get them out of this funk. Get off the ledge!

Terrific analysis WorcesterGray.
Now the big question......besides shooting better what else do we need to change?....or is this simply what the team is for this season?

Re TC: Bball at HC involves BIG MONEY. Salaries for the coaching staff, schollies for the players, cost of recruiting, cost of facilities, cost for marketing, cost for media, etc. And fans have to PAY to see them perform. It is reported via TV, Internet, print, radio. It's sort of like a business. For these reasons, it is a public enterprise. When a player disappears, it is incumbent on the program to say SOMETHING. This can be done in a sufficiently careful way to avoid disclosing any info that should remain private. (For these same reasons, the Head Coach should be contractually required to participate in post game pressers and weekly coach's shows WHETHER HE LIKES IT OR NOT.)

Well, I would like to see a few set inbounds plays that work (after 5 sec turnovers in each of the last two games).

It is the inbounder's job to call timeout if no one is open within 4 seconds overall we have had more success on underneath out of bounds plays than in converting 3-5 foot shots
