Clearly, he is in the mix for a roster/practice squad role. The issue for him is do they keep 6/7 LBs on the 53-man roster and what they add to the practice squad.
Athletic just posted its projected 53-man roster for the Colts.
Linebackers: 6
In: JoJo Domann, Zaire Franklin, Shaquille Leonard, Segun Olubi, E.J. Speed, Grant Stuard
Out: Liam Anderson (R), Cameron McGrone, Donavan Mutin (R)
Analysis: Leonard is the key to this room. The four-time All-Pro is currently out with a concussion, but assuming it doesn’t linger, the bigger news is that he’s back at all. A pair of back surgeries derailed his 2022 season, so this year we should find out if he can once again be “The Maniac.” If he is fully healthy, Indianapolis could take a gamble and roll with six linebackers instead of seven. That spot may be better used somewhere else.

In the box score on ESPN site, it gives Liam credit for '10 tackles and 7 solo' - tough to cut a guy with that line - certainly a practice squad spot will be available to him if he does get cut and another team doesn't pick him up

In the "modern era", say, since 1970, how many times have there been multiple HC grads on NFL opening day rosters? What's the most ever, in this time frame, active in the NFL at one time? Am I correct that we could conceivably have three or four this year? (I'm thinking Raymond, Whitley, and Anderson, but also thinking that I'm overlooking someone.) Jimmy Murray

He was phenomenal in pass coverage. Came up and made several open field tackles on check downs. The issue for him is that the LB room in Indy has stayed relatively healthy. He won’t make the initial 53 man. However, the Colts will be praying that he clears waivers so they can sign him to the practice squad. They REALLY like him. Of those 3 “Out” LBs, he got by far the most reps so is probably the first LB out right now. The problem for the Colts is that given the game film he’s put together last 2 games, he might not clear waivers and get picked up by another team that had more LB injuries in the Pre-season. Two big things that he has going for him. He’s making plays on STs and has ideal traits for a universal ST guy. Secondly, he played Will, Mike and Sam last night at LB. I guarantee b/c his football IQ is off the charts compared to most rookies. That versatility will be a huge asset to many teams. As a reminder teams currently have 90 on the preseason roster. 53 active and 16 P-squad players will remain on each of the 32 teams. So almost 700 players will be out of an NFL job by Tuesday/Wed next week.

Could be a Blake Costanzo (Lafayette) type guy in the NFL.

Perhaps it is a long shot but occasionally some of the final cuts are driven by contracts and trades, let's see what happens in the days ahead.

If he has value to them and they fear losing him through waivers, perhaps they will keep 7 LBs or create a phantom injury for another.

Why do they bother with playing the UFA's in the pre-season if they are not going to keep a guy who makes 10 tackles in a game?

9 players cut by the Colts last night. Still have a long way to go to 53. Every single projection I’ve seen has Liam being one of the final players waived. I’m not 100% on this but I believe really the only suspense here is whether he clears waivers and is signed to the Colts practice squad. if a player is “released”, I believe they are completely cut from the team and can be signed to another teams Practice squad. If a player is “waived”, I believe they have to be signed to another team’s 53 active squad, or else the Colts retain the right to sign that player to their practice squad if they do in fact clear the waiver wire. The base case looks to be that Liam is waived and re-signed to the Colts practice squad. Anything else will be a pretty big surprise Either way.

Thanks for the clarification on that. I am at a loss when it comes to the details of NFL contracts.

The base case looks to be that Liam is waived and re-signed to the Colts practice squad. Anything else will be a pretty big surprise Either way. If a player is waived they have to clear waivers (i.e., no one claims them) before anyone can sign them to the practice squad. If they are claimed by any team off waivers, the claimed player must be placed on the 53 man roster and con not be placed on the practice squad. If they clear waivers, then they are eligible to be signed to the practice squad. Only players on their rookie contract (i.e. first 4years in the league) can be waived. Veteran players (4+ years in the league) are released and are immediately free agents. Waivers and Releases are both ways players are "cut" but the difference is how quickly you are a free agent.

My understanding is that being on the active 53 man roster on Week #1 is extremely significant for the players, as being on the roster for Week #1 results in that player’s salary for the entire season becoming fully guaranteed. So, I have been told this is why you often see veterans and others with injury histories are released before Week #1 only to be re-signed after Week #1 so that their salary for the rest of the season is literally week-to-week with zero guarantees. Such a cut-throat business..

Colts just waived UDFA Rookie LB out of Houston Donovan Mutin so Liam beat him out in camp. If they keep 6 LBs, they will only cut one more. Liam or Segun Olubi (1 year out of San Diego State and practice squad member of the Colts in 2022) If they only keep 5 (which is very probable given the injuries they have at OL), both Liam and Olubi will likely be waived and signed to practice squad if they clear waivers.

Never want to get cut but this would be a great deal for Liam. Get that hand healed and learn the pro game on an up and coming team like the Colts. Still a chance that another team could grab him (hello Giants, hello Patriots) and sign him to the 53 man squad. Either way he's in the NFL. Great job Liam!!!

I Googled practice squad pay and found this summary of the pay and rules: www.hogshaven.com/2023/8/28/23837341/how-it-works-nfl-practice-squad-rules-eligibility-salary-and-more#:~:text=Practice%20squad%20players%20make%20%2412%2C000,or%20%24370%2C800%20for%2018%20weeks. 16 player squads Practice squads were limited to 10 players in 2019, but that was set to change with the new CBA. The number was going to 12 players for 2 years, and then was going to be increased to 14 players in 2022. That all changed when the uncertainty of COVID-19 hit, and the league increased practice squads to 16 players which will once again be the limit in 2023.
Practice squad players moving up to the main roster Teams now have more flexibility with using practice squad players on game day. PS players can be activated on game day before the team announces their inactives (90 minutes before game time). The player doesn’t have to be elevated from the PS to the main roster for the move. This can happen with up to two practice squad players per week. A player is now able to be elevated three times per season. To be activated a fourth time requires the player to be signed to the regular roster.
This was a big change from past rules, and makes it easier for teams to have players they know and trust on game day, and also not have to subject them to waivers when they are signed to the main roster and cut to get back to the practice squad.
Veteran players Another change over the last three years is the eligibility requirements for veteran players. Previously teams could have up to 4 players who had two years of NFL experience. Now teams can have 6 veterans with no limit on the amount of accrued seasons they have in the league.
Weekly payment Practice squad players make $12,000 per week or $216,000 for 18 weeks. Veteran players with over two years of experience will make a minimum of $16,100 per week or $289,800 for 18 weeks, and a maximum of $20,600 per week or $370,800 for 18 weeks.
Signing with the practice squad Teams must complete their roster cuts by Tuesday August 29th at 4pm, meaning that almost 1,200 players will be released, or placed on an injury list. Teams have until Wednesday at 12:00 noon to claim unvested players that have been waived. Vested veterans (players with a minimum of 4 accrued seasons) will be free agents immediately and are able to sign with any team.

My memory is that rookies who are on a team’s practice squad earn $11,500 for each week they remain on the squad, up to a total annual salary of $207,000 for the entire 18 week regular season (17 games plus bye week).

And keep in mind that is on top of the guaranteed bonus money many of the top UDFAs get when they first sign. Some can be quite lucrative now. Truman Jones from Harvard was ~100k from the Chiefs. Based on reports of how much the Colts wanted Liam, I think he got a nice upfront bonus as well.
