When was this announced? Hadn’t seen that press release. ADMB announced it when he released renderings of changes at the top of the hill. The new softball field is placed where the field events occur: e.g., javelin, discus. Those events are to be relocated to the soccer team's practice field near the Luth. ADKH has subsequently stated the cost estimate for new and reconstructed fields on top of the hill is $17+ million. I believe, but am not certain, the $17M includes the $3+ million for the new surface for field hockey and the running track. The $17M includes expansion of Smith stadium to 3,000 seats, new surface for Fr. K field, and the new softball field (with an artificial surface). 3,000 seats? We're getting a thousand paid tickets and a few hundred actually attending basketball games, why are three thousand soccer fans expected to materialize on top of the hill?

Maybe this is in Chesney’s new contract I believe the story about the grounds crew treating their baby, the Fitton gridiron like a Botanical Garden. But the power dynamic seems out of kilter. I haven't seen a release about HC restructuring the contract of the head of landscaping and extending it to 2028. Very possible Coach Chesney tied up a few loose ends like this in his contract negotiations.

Vermont Men's Soccer was in an elite eight this year from a similar level conference. Holy Cross Lacrosse plays in a top level conference so if they ever got it rolling for the first time in history, they should have a stadium worthy of hosting the PL Tournament.

While a school openly advertising the lack of benefits of said position might be embarrassing, I don't think low-level unpaid assistants are a rare find in FCS and below. I've definitely seen "quality control" type positions at the tail end of coaching resumes. If your college playing career is over and you don't get hired as a GA anywhere your first summer after graduation, this might not be a bad option to at least get on the coaching latter. Obviously, I am sure its understood that this individual would need to obtain at least a part-time job during mornings to make ends meet -- and split rent with a couple of the other assistant coaches. College athletic departments aren't a bottomless pit of money. I'm of the opinion that if a company (in this case football program) is going to be asking you to perform services, there needs to be something given in return (not just a bullet point on a resume). The return here doesn't need to be a salary, but getting a room in an apartment, on the college meal plan, and a stipend during the months of the season should all be doable. This is one reason there is so much nepotism in college and pro football. Holy Cross football has THREE quality control coaches on staff right now. None of them have had a paid coaching job before. (We know they are not in grad school at Holy Cross). The Director of Operations for Holy Cross football lists TWO YEARS of VOLUNTEER work at Holy Cross before getting named to that position. Not many people can spend two years of working for free. goholycross.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/jordan-smith/1226Might just be the way College and Pro Football is now....

When I looked, Park and Linda Smith's names did not appear on the list of donors for The Jo. It was Park Smith's sale of his Chateau d'Yquem and other fine wines that was the initial funding impetus for transforming the old field house into what became a student recreation center. (The College ultimately decided to build new rather than reconstruct/renovate the old.) Who is the present-day soccer stadium named after? Who will an expanded stadium be named after? Park Smith was one of the world's great wine collectors. Sotheby's auction of some of his collection in 2020. www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2020/vine-distinguished-collections-including-the-park-b-smith-cellar-celebrating-rhone?lotFilter=AllLotsFrom 2019, www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/2019/finest-and-rarest-wines-and-spirits-hk0883.html?locale=en[/urlI had not realized he died in August 2022, and only learned of his death moments ago from an obituary published by Sotheby's. Did I miss an announcement by the College?? www.sothebys.com/en/articles/the-life-and-times-of-park-b-smith-collector-businessman-restaurateur-philanthropist-1^^^ The Sotheby's obit details his great generosity to the College, including the auction of the Chateau d'Yquem.

Yeah, page 80 of the current HC Magazine. Was very surprised that HC did not send an individual notice out as soon as he died.
And, yes, I thought the same thing about the naming of The Jo with no mention of Park Smith.

The only other published announcement that I found was this: www.hometextilestoday.com/people/park-b-smith-a-home-textiles-original-passes/which mentions a "eulogy" by the College, which I cannot find. This publication's announcement was published August 30, 2022, four days after his death. I very much tend to gloss over obits in the Holy Cross magazine that are for alums who matriculated in years distant from my own. --------------------------- Even the funeral home obit is bare bones minimum. (The service was private,) www.conklinfuneralhome.com/memorials/park-smith/5010261/index.php#details

Viewed 27,000+ times as of 12:35 PM today. How many times were articles about the Grounds Superintendent's contract viewed? I hope negotiations for the Chesney contract restructure gave Coach Chesney final say about access to the "botanical garden" of Fitton Field for practice when necesssry, with advise and counsel from the Buildings and Grounds Dept. and not the other way around as it apparently has been.

I hope the crowds are even bigger at Fitton next year.
Maybe Chesney can do even more community outreach. He has completely changed the interest in Holy Cross football.
So excited he will be back.
This must make the rest of the PL cry because they have a very small shot at a championship.

This must make the rest of the PL cry because they have a very small shot at a championship. I think the ability to engage the broader community is definitely a big part of Chesney’s value. How you quantify that beyond just increased ticket sales and related revenues when trying to figure out whether we’re making or losing money on football, I have no idea. I’m just happy he’s our guy and hopefully will be for at least a few more years.

Not exactly outreach to the Worcester community but definitely to the Holy Cross community, I've seen Coach Chesney with his son at a men's home basketball game and yesterday he was there with his two daughters for the women's basketball team jersey retirement ceremony at the Blaney gym. And, his family has been at the ladies basketball games in Pennsylvania. The Chesney clan is "all in" with Holy Cross. They support with their presence, not just the football team, but other athletic teams as well. Holy Cross can't pay him enough for his contribution to the school.
Bob Chesney might be the best hire Holy Cross has made in decades, if not in history, and an argument could be made for the latter.

Could produce a weekly show from somewhere in the Luth or at a local bar/restaurant. Bring on a sponsor to pay for production costs and, potentially, make a dollar or two. Kevin Shea and/or Andy Lacombe hosts the show. A no-brainer.

A revival of "The Holy Cross Football Show" featuring Coach Duffner and Mr. E. !
Still get a laugh out of Mr. E. asking some camera-shy player what he thought of the nice weather the team got to play their games in that year.

Someone educate me. If Coach Chesney wanted a radio show, I'd think he could do that on his own between himself and the radio or TV station unless his contract forbade it, which would be - how should I put this? - stupid.

Gives hope that he will not leave HC unless there are extraordinary financial rewards. Unless a program makes a Godfather……” I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse." Hopefully he and his family have sought the counsel of Coach Duffner.
