HC is #350 in free throw percentage among D-1 teams--leaving a lot of points on the table game after game

One problem is that the two best FT shooters, Batch and Nolan, have taken only 43 between them

I would like to see Kirkwood get 15 plus min/game for the next five or more games and told to take shots, attack the rim, and rebound. Let's see what he can do offensively and how he defends in the paint. While he is not necessarily an inside player, perhaps his body could take some of the inside pressure off of Gates This is one issue with a lame duck coach. This might be a strategy for a coach building a program; but not one trying to survive.

No coach, lame duck or not, begins experimenting two thirds into the season when playoff order is still greatly undetermined.

I agree with you that is the approach taken by coaches, and heck we could win out and go 12-6 if we catch everybody on a bad day.
In reality we might win 3 more games and go 7-11 with possibly a 6th place finish, or we might not win another game and finish 4-14 and finish in 9th.
He might want to consider ways to save the legs of Gates and create different options for the playoffs. So far, I am not sure Kenney is that option.
His future might be determined by the team getting to the semis or the finals, or it might be determined already-both decisions above my pay grade✝️🏀

the one thing I don't like to see is people losing their job and the ability to provide for their family. It is worse when you have organization restructuring cuts and their departure isn't based on performance.

Possibly the livelihood of a family Sorry, but he's been highly compensated for several years now, and with that compensation comes the risk of being dismissed for not performing to expectations. I'm not unsympathetic, but it shouldn't be verboten to discuss a change, either.

Ray I think few would disagree with you, but if Nelson’s future truly is undecided then I get the point.
Personally, I think the decision has been made, even though some have suggested he has one more year on his contract.

There have been ongoing discussions on Crossports of who would replace the head coach when he failed...from even before day 1. Clearly, based on that alone, such discussions have never been verboten on Crossports. Why would you think they are, Ray? I, for one, I like to wait until there is actually an opening before debating who should fill it. Otherwise it can be seen as simply hot air. However, it does not stretch the imagination to think that Kit is right now evaluating possible contenders IF (and that is a big "if") there is a future opening.

Did you just find that out? What is your point? Should not "messages" have some contact with reality? I guess fiction is always an option for a "message."

Possibly the livelihood of a family I wasn't thinking of Nelson's future at HC when I said that although I guess my pessimism about HC doing anything in the postseason is tangentially related to Nelson's future employment. If this is the end of his D1 head coaching career, I don't see how that means he will not be able to provide for his family. For an example of that see FHCSK.

I think hoops point is that there is someone like us at the other end of these decisions who might not look at the decision through the same lens as some of us. I'm sure he has hopes for a long career in coaching and getting fired or unrenewed would be pretty serious.

Obviously it would be a big blow to his career aspirations but not the end of his career if he chooses to continue in basketball. It could also be a new beginning perhaps in something unrelated to basketball.

For many of us who have had to let people go deservedly or because of business downturns your response is similar to the HR guidelines. The problem was the person hearing the message never had a "thanks, good point" look on their face. Trimster, most of us post just like you, showing happiness or frustration with the coaches, etc. It's fine, as others said "it's a message board"

I suspect Nelson's Rolodex is chock full of prominent names in the college coaching world, and he will find a happy place as a second assistant on some high major bench where he will earn a comfortable living.
My sympathy is reserved for Sam Ferry and RJ whose resumes have taken a hit by their decisions to sink with the ship, and who don't have Billy Donovan on speed dial.

RJ might be okay.
He was a GA at Texas under Shaka Smart, who's done a great job at Marquette so far. Prior to joining HC, he was at Asheville for Mike Morell's first season (they're 17-6 this year). I assume being tied to Willard still carries some weight, and he might be able to help him get in with a program.
Ferry could be in a predicament. His former bosses (Dennis Felton and Kevin Stallings) are no longer head coaches and one is out of the business (Stallings). His other boss, King Rice, is 2-20 this year and might be looking for another job soon.
As WooGray posted, Nelson will be better off and much more comfortable as the lead assistant at an AAC / MAC type program.

RJ was at Louisville, and, of course, played at UConn as well as HC. I think he's got enough contacts to land on his feet.
