Unh board down for repairs? This might be the worst post in Crossports history! UNHfan is MOST WELCOME here. His posts are balanced, informed, and interesting. I am still 100% flummoxed that we managed to loss that game to the Wildcats. That notwithstanding, post often UNH fan. You are a class act from an excellent school!

Tough day to expect to get students there. Study period was this weekend. Finals start Tuesday. Hopefully we get on a run here and the students are excited to come see the team in mid-January. Are you freaking kidding me? It was an early Sunday afternoon game. Give me a break. The school ain't that tough! Nobody has a nuclear physics or neurosurgery exam on Tuesday. The entire time that the current students were ages 5-17 we usually sucked. 17 year olds who love competitive sports didn't op to come to HC. (Thank you JEB) We just lost to UNH and MAINE! Why the confusion? WIN

There was a stretch from around 2001-08/09 where attendance (students and alums/locals) was pretty good.
8485 has a bar graph showing the direct correlation between wins and attendance.
99-00 (first year of Willard, 10-18 record): 995 00-01 (22-8 record after four years of being below .500): 2,195
So, we more than doubled attendance with the uptick in play.
01-02: 1,990 02-03: 3,010 (this may have been the best HC team I have ever seen) 03-04: 2,548 (transition year following three straight NCAA Tournament teams) 04-05: 2,515 05-06: 2,428 06-07: 3,044 (return to NCAA Tournament, Keith / Torey's senior season) 07-08: 2,678 08-09: 2,404 09-10: 2,196 (despite the disastrous year with FCSK, attendance maintained above 2,000 thanks to all the successful previous years)
10-11: 1,830 (first year of FCMB era, attendance would never average above 2,000, and actually decreases every season) 11-12: 1,821 12-13: 1,517 13-14: 1,406 14-15: 1,370
15-16: 1,611 (first year of Carm)
Conclusion: When we were pretty good (2001-2009), our average attendance was 2,291. When we had Milan Brown, average attendance was 1,589.
I'm looking for attendance numbers to creep above 2,000, once again, with Carm.

Might HC even see...wait for it... a HOME Game in the PL tourney??? There's no reason we shouldn't be a top four seed for the PLT. There seems to be four tiers in the league thus far: 1) Lehigh, Bucknell 2) HC, BU3) Army, Loyola, Navy 4) Colgate, Lafayette, American First-year Army coach Jimmy Allen the early frontrunner for COY? Despite graduating five impact players (Toomey, Ferguson, Cox, Wilson, and Plomb), Army has been a nice surprise. our PL opener will tell us a lot. hopefully we can get a good contingent of purple in the stands.

Very nice analysis. I'm thinking that, following the improbable PL tournament run and the win in Dayton, if we had been able to go, say, 8-5 or 9-4 in this tough preseason (I didn't project that--just making an argument) some skeptical fans would have concluded "The Cross is back" and attendance would have been very solid for this year. As it is, I think we are still in the phase of building credibility with fans. I believe if we get back to the Willard Era W-L records and repeated PL championships we'll get back to the 2,500 to 3,000 level with sellouts for key games.

The passing yesterday was a thing of beauty, both against their man and zones. Now I realize that the Q plays bad D, but our cutting and passing was as good as I can remember for an HC team since the Potter, Perry days. even those teams did not ask the 5 man to pass the ball the way the PO does. Even JF has significantly improved his passing. He played the best I have seen him play. I liked the way CBC kept him in during the first half when he had 3 fouls.

That is an apt comparison. Forget the weakness of the opponent. That ball movement was something to watch...a thing of beauty as you said.

Gentlemen how much is the lack of student attendance or even the lack of support of the community due to the many choices that people have now a days whether it be on tv, campus or in the community? I also wonder how much the great success of the pro sports teams in the area contribute to the lack of support. New England is a pro sports area unlike the South and Midwest where college athletics are king!

We have a small arena, (unlike intermediate sized Conte, or large Cameron, etc.) and there isn't much else in the area, so regardless of the many nuances of contemporary college basketball attendance patterns, if we do well on the court, we can certainly cobble together 2,500 - 3,000 local fans to come watch home games. They're there.

Bring in a Chris Potter or Mike Vicens type. Create some pre season buzz. Start the season strong with good wins and exciting play. Then students will want to be there as well as locals. Oh, and join a higher profile league. Mike Vicens was at the game! Here is a link to the post game presser....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpXcg91Ixsk&feature=youtu.be

So far this year I've been to Syracuse, Albany, Marist, and HC ... Same number of students at all of those games, very few HC arranged for a fleet of free shuttles to take students to and from the UIMass game at the DCU. They went unused, apparently because there was a big party (ies) on campus on that Saturday night. I repeat: this is the self-absorbed generation. One of the student sections at Conte before a 2013 game with Maryland. (The other section had more.) February 2016, VA Tech at BC at Conte. November 2016 Howard at Georgetown But when attendance is good, its great. ^^^Georgetown @ Verizon. Game date unknown. Image posting date is 2014.

Hockey is the big student draw sport at HC, and has been for several years now. You think that more students care about hockey than basketball? The only reason hockey attendance may have been higher than basketball in recent years is because the basketball teams were losing at a tremendous clip. If basketball gets back to winning, students will be choosing to go to basketball games again and hockey attendance will drop. The idea that there is some type of massive student following for hockey is a myth.

If you did you'd realize that hockey is now the buzz sport on campus among students. And in comparison to the student attendance at BB games, the hockey following is indeed large, as significantly more students go to hockey games than hoop. Is it because BB stunk for the six years prior to last season? Maybe. Is it because the hockey team is more engaged with the general student body than the hoop team was under MB? Maybe, but it still doesn't change what I said.

Daughter #1 was HC class of 2009. She's not a big sports fan but had pretty good school spirit and went to football, basketball, and hockey games--not every game but more than a few a year. She always told me that the hockey games were a lot of fun and that the students were really into HC hockey.

When the basketball program straightens itself out, there will far more students caring about basketball than hockey, and far more students attending basketball games than hockey. Using the past 5-6 years while the basketball team has been awful as your evidence is a losing argument. (In addition to the losing basketball program, hockey has also benefited from playing far more games at better times on Friday and Saturday nights than this joke of a basketball schedule the PL has fallen into to accommodate a sh*tty television package. Of course hockey attendance will be better than basketball if the team's losing and games are on Sundays, Modays, and Wednesdays).)
