Megan Yurchick got a preseason all league nod. 21 wins last season was a good start, but they'll need to find a replacement for Kelly Nelson if they want to improve on that this year.

Megan Yurchick got a preseason all league nod. 21 wins last season was a good start, but they'll need to find a replacement for Kelly Nelson if they want to improve on that this year. Holy Cross finished third in the conference in hitting and second in ERA but the real problem was fielding. They were second to last in fielding percentage.

HC returns the 1, 2 and 3 hitters from last year, but loses 4, 5 and 6 to graduation. And Ms. Nelson had something to do with the team ERA.
And Lehigh beat Top 10 Alabama today 7-4. I'm not sure why I add that other than to say it could be an interesting PL season.

She was a positive representative of HC in her interviews/quotes during her career.

At 3-4 one of the more successful teams in Holy Cross sports aside from Football and Women’s basketball. The rest of the slate is pretty pathetic.

Lost 4 close games over the weekend - some untimely fielding errors and a lack of offense - have lost 8 of our last 9 games (3-8 overall) We have only two D.1 caliber pitchers and they will get nearly all the work this season - both had good performances but the team was missing clutch plays in the late innings
Florida Int'l next with dh on Tuesday

League play gets underway this weekend - the OOC results so far are the usual (the schools with schollies have the pitching and the results) BU is 22-7 and Lehigh is 19-6 - both with numerous wins over power conference foes everyone else well below .500 incl HC at 5-16 after being swept in DH at Quinnipiac Tuesday - pitching has not been good and we really miss Nelson
Jr. Yurchik and Fr. Roncone (recruited pitcher from Pa) have both struggled so far from the bump- let's hope for improvement in league play - 3 games at AWP this weekend

3 of the 5 wins have been Yurchik shutouts.

Yes, she is our no.1 pitcher but her era this season is 4.68 and for the '22 season her era was 3.06 I think she will improve in league play

This weekend is important. BU and Lehigh are a cut above (as usual) and Lafayette appears to be off the back. Two of the remaining four will make the PL tourney, which if Coach Kim can make it happen, would be a "win" for HCSB. The next three days will reveal much.

Scheduled for Friday & Sunday at AWP. Is this because of the rain predicted for Saturday?

Scheduled for Friday & Sunday at AWP. Is this because of the rain predicted for Saturday? I would assume they are going to play and come back both days. Otherwise, it doesn't make any sense to postpone the Saturday games now. It might not rain after all, things happen like that. (edit). Good call on it raining there. I hope they left and are coming back, would seem to be less expensive than two nights' lodging.

Pitching is becoming a crisis - both our no. 1 and 2 pitchers were ineffective and we lost twice today 9-6 (after leading 6-1) and 8-0

HCSB is fighting an 8 game losing streak including 3 straight to Army. We have a twin bill against Stonehill today. The Skyhawks just moved up to D1 and are 1 and 20 so far this season. With BU lurking this weekend, we need this.

BU had a light workout today in Worcester- beat HC twice 11-1 in a run rule game and 6-0 with HC getting one hit - the league is so top heavy this year with BU and Lehigh head and shoulders over the rest

In yday's 2nd game (6-0 loss) HC batters struck out 17 times and only put the ball in play 4 times (for the 21 total outs) More of the same in today's single game in all likelihood

Run rule loss in 6 innings, 9-0 and no-hit by their #2 (based on ERA and IP), Kasey Ricard, a freshman from Littleton.

Outscored in 3 game series 26-1 It borders on the absurd to subject our kids to face such a team - and Lehigh might be just as good If you don’t have excellent pitching in softball you have no chance

Extend and retain Riga, then go to work on women’s hockey and the minor sports. The minor sports need a champion. Hard to know if Kit is that champion. Realistically that champion has to be able to shake the money tree, as PP would say because more resources are obviously needed and it's unlikely resources will be diverted from the revenue sports to build up the minor sports. Tuition increases to support minor sports are also difficult because tuition is already to the moon.

Agreed, Purple and Long. But it's deeper than that. I have a '24 pitcher on my 18u travel team. Throws low 60's with good command both north/south and east/west. Looking at east coast schools, has a 4.2 GPA and wants to be a doc (like her dad). Full pay. 15 years ago, HC was ranked near top in the Forbes college rankings (#27 the year my DD committed). This year? Forbes has us at 134, last of the PL softball teams and one spot ahead of UMBC. The Forbes ranking isn't everything and I still believe the HC education gives kids a leg up, but it's getting harder and harder to make the case that HC is worth it, especially when the other Patriots are ranked higher (like BU, 80 slots above us).
