I thought a few of my fellow old timers here might be interested in this article from the Buffalo News. Murphy made some poor personal choices over his life, but he was a hell of a basketball player, particularly in college. He scored 2,548 points in 77 college basketball games. Not Maravich numbers, but remarkable, nonetheless. This was, of course, the freshman team, pre shot clock, pre three-point shot era. As you guys undoubtedly remember, he was from Norwalk. one of my wife's brothers-in-law; Holy Cross, class of 1970, btw; once had the misfortune of playing against him in high school. Since the brother in law was his high school's point guard, he had the primary defensive responsibility for Murphy. He tells me it was not an enjoyable evening.

A local successful restaurateur had the pleasure of guarding Earl Kelley, at the time the best player in Conn who would star at UConn. I frequently remind him that he held Kelley to 45 points that night!
