Nate Pine was hired to improve HC basketball and football.....and then maybe hockey and lacrosse. He was not brought in to improve volleyball or field hockey....sorry, but he wasn't.

The Olympic sports are largely the "side dish" of D1 athletics....not saying they aren't important but they aren't why Nate Pine was hired.
And if they are...we might as well go the D3 route....if volleyball is just as important to the school as football or basketball...we might as well be NESCAC, what's the point?

If football and basketball move back to the top of the PL and win a few PL titles, Nate has done his job. He was also hired to drastically increase athletic fundraising.

hc87- How the hell do you come up with that stuff? Do you have a videographic memory? Our Art teacher at St Benedicts, Fr. Justin, O.S.B., used to punish us by striking the palm of our hand with a wooden dowel. Hurt like hell. Fr. Benedict used to stand right up close to the front of your desk with his hands at his side, then stand motionless. Then, when you least expected it, he would slap your face hard--but you didn't know from which side it would come. Can you imagine that kind of stuff happening in a public high school today? Surviving being terrified will toughen you up. I think the Benes took their lesson from Marine Boot Camp. Nothing like an all boys Catholic high school. I think that's where most of the guys came from at HC in my day. I wouldn't change it for the world.

It's from "Heaven Help Us"....great little film from 1985, highly recommend especially if you went to a Catholic HS. The writer of the film David Papura (?) supposedly went to a St Augustine's HS in NYC in the 60s when and where the film is set.

HC athletics was so far behind modern times. Probably take 10 years to catch up. Still think the bigger problem is in pay-grades above Nate Pine. Similar to when Ron Perry Sr. came in- football was around 500 (which was a dramatic improvement, but still around 500), basketball had its worst two seasons in decades. Facilities 20 years behind the times (unfortunately what they built only gained about 10 of those back). I gotta think someone up there knows what they are doing and didn't pour 95 million into buildings with no plan moving forward.

When two jets crashed over NYC in the early 60s, one almost hit St. Augustine's.

Agreed. The only two sports that count are football and men's basketball. The Carmody hire was a plus for basketball... although it will take time (to be generous about it)...despite HC's miraculous performance in the PL tournament that may (or may not) indicate that b'ball is getting better. Personally, I'm skeptical. Football, on the other hand, is in disarray. How Gilmore could have been retained...especially after the demolition job administered by Fordham at Yankee Stadium... is beyond my comprehension and only says to me that HC isn't very serious about the sport. My conclusion is that HC's days as a significant basketball and football school are long gone and unlikely to be revisited any time soon...in the sense of never. Ergo, I've decided to do other things with my time. You stalwarts might consider doing likewise. The reality is that our alma mater is done as a factor of any kind in intercollegiate sports. And that doesn't piss anyone off more than me. Trust me. Thank you, Father Brooks!

87, what's the point of this thread? As previously pointed out, no one here ever said NP was a "savior."
The things that he has worked on, definitely with a focus on fund raising, are like capital improvements in a business. Thay are designed for long term success, not immediate results. The LAC is one of those things, a big thing.
And lucky break for for him that he hired Carmody who produced a PL championship, a trip and a win in the NCAAs that hadn't happened in decades.
If you are looking to have NP fired, just say so. I don't think you will find a lot of support here on Crossports.

Let's just say I expected more (so far anyway). I think he's done a fine job in general...but you can't say the results on the fields of play have been appreciably bettah since his arrival on Mt St James. Just holding him accountable here as it were....let's see where we are in a couple more years.

....let's see where we are in a couple more years. This would be the fair and right way to look at things. Aside from the immediate changes that can be made to marketing/media initiatives (which Pine has implemented), I'd say it's difficult to judge him on on-field results so soon.

Hoops, I am pretty sure you know I was being facetious about the CWC hire. As for RC's lucky shot, it simply was balancing all the shots taken over the course of that season that rimmed out.
Glad 87 is willing to give NP a little more time to prove himself.😉

Just holding him accountable here as it were....let's see where we are in a couple more years. Fixed it for you. And seriously what exactly were you expecting by this time? Perhaps more importantly, to move this topic forward ... Keeping in mind the full role of the athletic director at Holy Cross, discuss what you expect to see when you look where we are in a couple more years? Be specific. Use examples.
