With the obvious caveats that Pistol Pete did it in just 3 years and with no 3-pointers, it looks like his 50 year-old college scoring record [edit] may be broken: “Detroit Mercy star guard Antoine Davis …leads the nation with 28.1 points per game this season but has upped his production even more as of late by averaging 34 points per contest over the last eight games of the regular season to make catching Maravich a realistic possibility. Two games at that scoring pace would make him the sport's new all-time leading scorer. Maravich has held the all-time record with 3,667 points since 1970. The legendary LSU guard set the mark before the arrival of a 3-point line in college basketball and with just three seasons worth of games since he spent his first season on the school's freshman team at a time when freshmen weren't eligible for varsity competition. …By contrast, this is Davis' fifth season of college basketball since he was granted an additional year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But there is no doubt he's among the sport's all-time great scorers. He's already the NCAA's all-time leader in made 3-pointers with a tally that increased to 578 after he drilled five more on Saturday.” www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/antoine-davis-nearing-pete-maravichs-ncaa-career-scoring-record-as-detroit-heads-to-horizon-league-tournament/amp/

Have any of Davis’ games been nationally televised ? If Detroit Mercy loses in the first round, it is very likely he will not break the Pistol’s record.

Didn't know he was Mike Davis' son (coached IU after Knight and other places).
They have to win their first round game (7 vs 11 or something like that; U of D is not very good) for him to have a shot.

If the NCAA still had the no Freshman eligibility rule, players like Luc, Lowder and Joe P. would have one additional year of maturity and one additional year invested in Holy Cross before they did or didn't bolt.

It's not only the number of seasons, it's the number of games per season. Maravich played in 83 games. Davis has already played in 142.

Have any of Davis’ games been nationally televised ? If Detroit Mercy loses in the first round, it is very likely he will not break the Pistol’s record. As noted in the article: “Note: At his current average of 26.1 points per game Davis would need three games in the Horizon League Tournament to catch Maravich.”

It's not only the number of seasons, it's the number of games per season. Maravich played in 83 games. Davis has already played in 142. Maravich scoring record is truly phenomenal. 59 extra games WITH A THREE POINT LINE and only then is his record threatened.

This is why God made asterisks. Records are made to be broken. Don't diminish the accomplishment. Maravich still took more shots!!!! 3,166 to 2,934 Free throws attempted 1152 to 707

Both players had the same advantage of having their fathers coach them. I have not seen Davis play, but it seems as if the father has let the son have free rein to shoot whenever he chose. Certainly Press Maravich let Pete perform, with shooting, dribbling and passing with his distinctive flair, even at the expense of more losses than LSU should have had. Both players did pass the ball, 5 apg for Pete, 4 for Davis. Both teams had losing records throughout their stars’ careers.

Detroit-Mercy hosts Purdue-Fort Wayne tomorrow in Detroit. In their regular season game Detroit crushed PFW, winning 85-52 as Davis scored 32 points.
In the last 6 games Davis has sat out a total of only 15 minutes, and I'll wager that he'll sit out no more than two minutes tomorrow regardless of the score differential between the teams. In these last six games he has averaged 10 two point attempts (same as in first 25 games) and 10 three point attempts (versus 10 in first 25 games). He has been going to the line more often with 9 FTA/game in last six games versus 4&1/2 in first 25 games.
It seems highly likely that Detroit will beat PFW tomorrow, giving Davis at least one more chance after that to get the points he needs. Certainly PFW's first goal is to win the game tomorrow but one also has to wonder if it will make any defensive changes knowing that Detroit will be going to Davis even more than it usually does. If Detroit wins it will likely play either Milwaukee or Youngstown State on the road and be a real underdog. So a third game seems very unlikely, He scored 42 points versus Milwaukee in the regular season loss (33 FGA) but only 15 versus Youngstown State (18 FGA) in that regular season loss. I think he needs 40 points tomorrow night and a Detroit win to give him a decent chance to break Pistol Pete's career record.
Trivia question-which I think will take a reader just a few seconds to nail:whose scoring record did Maravich break?
Okay, here's one more thought on Pete Maravich. In the year before he joined the LSU varsity the team went 1-17 in SEC play. In his first year on the team LSU went 8-10. In his senior year the team went 13-5 in SEC games.

His senior year was their only real good year at 22-10 overall and 13-5 in the SEC.

The big improvement for LSU between ‘68-‘69 and ‘69-‘70 was the addition of two sophomore big men, Alan Sanders and Bill Newton. Can you recall the nicknames of these two gentlemen?

The twin towers ? The few games that I saw the Pistol were competitive, but he shot LSU out of contention. But he still put on a great show.

How many points does Davis need ? Maravich finished with 3,667 points. With 38 tonight, Antoine Davis has 3,642. He needs 25 to tie Pistol Pete. In his regular season game against Youngstown State, Thursday's opponent. Davis scored just 15 points as his 3 point shooting was off, just 2-12 versus .420+ for the season.
