It's March and the ACC Tourney is in Greensboro. All is right in the world. I remember being a kid growing up in Central Mass and turning on my transistor radio one night in the early 60's and getting a broadcast of the ACC Tourney, probably from Greensboro. (I read this morning it has been held there 23 times since 1960). I remember the announcer talking about Larry Miller and maybe a player named Billy Cunningham. He also mentioned Coach Vic Bubas. It is one of my earliest memories of tournament basketball. Anyone out there ever been to an ACC tourney game at the Greensboro Coliseum?

Hopefully they will be using the classic purple and turquoise floor design.

I think it was in Madison Sq Garden a few years ago. Before the likes of BC, ND, Syracuse, and Pitt, the tournament was always in the Carolina's. The traditionalist in me likes it down there. NYC just seems wrong. Great for the Big East. Not so much for the ACC

UConn lost to UNC in the Elite 8 game I saw. Tough draw for the Huskies to get UNC there a couple of weeks after UNC played the ACC tourney there.

Billy Cunningham, aka the Kangaroo Kid, was from a neighboring parish to me in Brooklyn, starred at UNC. As one of the lone New Yorkers in the ACC (he followed the example of Frank McGuire’s 1957 National Champion’s 5 starters all from NYC) he was vilified at away games in the ACC. A hall of Famer in the NBA for the Sixers.

I believe he got the nickname by jumping over a convertible. Great player in the NBA for sure!

The Big East contract is at least through 2028 with MSG. www.sportico.com/leagues/college-sports/2022/big-east-tournament-msg-1234668363/

My first recollection of that tournament was in 1968...Duke was highly favored over NC State. NC State beat them, 12-10. So, Duke, who was in the Top 10, couldn't go to the dance, only the tournament winner, who ended up being NC. www.wralsportsfan.com/acc-s-slowdown-game-made-for-some-memories/13645773/Because of that loss, I got to see Duke play in person in the NIT. That was a bit of an odd game as well. They were playing Oklahoma City U, coached by the legendary Abe Lemons. Duke was ahead by more than 20 at the half; in an era when "more than 20" meant "game over". After about 5 minutes of the break, OCU came back on the court. Half the guys were wearing their home shirts, the other half away shirts. They scrimmaged for the rest of the break than played the second half. When asked why he did it, Lemons replied "Never too early to get ready for next year".

That didn’t go over well with my many Celtic fan friends in school. One of my favorite Sixers was the PA guy, Dave Zinkoff. I think I even got WCAU on the radio up here in Central Mass.

NCAA Tourney,'68 - Columbia v. Davidson. Was that game played in Greensboro? There was a bit of , how shall we say, "controversy." Ahem!

My recollection was that the announcer made it a 2 syllable name: "Guh-rear"! Are younger posters aware of Hal Greer's unusual free throw shooting style?

Dave Z had a unique and fun pronunciation for ‘76er team members.
More than likely only us old time basketball junkies will remember Hal Greer in action on the court. First time I saw Hal at the foul line was in 1963.

Who was the long time PA guy at MSG? He always announced each basket with a "that was", as in "That was Bob Lanier.....St. Bonaventure leads, 35-22".

“Tickles the twines” “Creases the cords” Wallleeee. He had several different Wali (changed his name from Wally) Jones, one being "Wali By Golly" "Two For Shue" "A Pair For Share" "Andrew Toney", the "Toe" very loud and elongated.

Ky Not a younger poster🙂 but do remember his FT shooting style…the jumper. Career FT shooting % of .801. Always wondered why more players, particularly the ones with poor FT shooting %s, wouldn’t try it, especially later in games where the legs are more tired and the jumper would provide more lift to get the ball over the front rim.

Wali Jones' jumper had a lot of leg action (kick out, kick back; that sort of thing); in today's NBA that would be considered a real plus in drawing fouls that in the past they didn't call.

Hopefully they will be using the classic purple and turquoise floor design. I watched a bit of a women’s tourney game in Greensboro last night and the floor is that and then some although I am not sure I’d call it Classic.
