OK, with the season mercifully over, Crusader Nation turns its loss-weary eyes to Kit Hughes. I fully expect an announcement on Wednesday that Nelson has been relieved of duties and we are searching for our next coach.
Of course, this board has already been searching for our next coach for a while now, and we've thrown out a lot of names. I've been tracking those mentions. 30 candidates so far.
I've sorted them into categories above. Please don't quibble with the categorizations, they're just meant as a framework. Yes, I realize Freddie Owens' HC ties are flimsy. Yes, I realize Greg Herenda could also fit under 'HC ties'. Yes, I realize Rick Pitino isn't coming here.
As I have been staring at, and tweaking, this list in the last few weeks, my primary question is this: Is our next coach on this list, or will he come from "the field"?
Discuss.
Big swings Tom Crean Kevin Ollie Rick Pitino
HC ties Brian Blaney Justin Burrell Eric Eaton RJ Evans Freddie Owens Andy Sachs Torey Thomas
Chesney 2.0 Kevin App Chris Bartley Kevin Bettencourt Ryan Cain Brock Erickson Landry Kosmalski John Krikorian Jay Lawson Josh Loeffler Joe Reilly Josh Merkel
current D1 HC's John Becker Pat Duquette Joe Gallo Pat Skerry
former D1 HC's Will Brown Jim Christian John Gallagher Greg Herenda Mike Lonergan Tom Moore Dave Paulsen

Will be an interesting process. Praying we find the right guy this time. It’s been way too long since we had a consistently strong team. As others have said, turning around a basketball program can happen pretty quickly with the right leader. We have at least two scholarships with which the new coach can start the rebuild immediately.

John Krikorian (Christopher Newport) is an Auburn native and a Chesney 2.0 type worth considering.

Pat Duquette is another name to toss around.
He shouldn’t get the job, but is worthy of listing with the collection of names here, IMO.

Krikorian certainly checks a lot of important boxes for me. Would be very happy if he’s the guy.

Fun fact: Brian Blaney has been an assistant coach for the last 28 years.

Fun fact: Brian Blaney has been an assistant coach for the last 28 years. Not that fun. I remember Brian as a little kid, so that kind of paints me as old Coach Sachs could be under Chesney 2.0 as well as HC ties I wouldn't consider Coach Owens HC ties as flimsy. As a former member of the hoops program, no more flimsy than Brian Blaney who didn't go to HC or work in the program (although he grew up with this father running the show)

TJ Sorrentine? Local kid from Pawtucket - Associate Head Coach at Brown - some success at the IVY league school that cares the least about athletics
Not that it matters - but probably hit one of the biggest shots ever in Worcester

What's the over/under on how many more hours/days/weeks Brett Nelson is the head basketball coach of The College of the Holy Cross?

I like the guy at Swarthmore.....played under McKillop at Davidson and actually has consistently won a lot at Swarthmore which couldn't have been easy. Then again I wanted Ricky P 4 years ago.

Being at best the four seed for the Ivy League MBB tournament?

Loved the Sorrentine moment in the tournament, but he's been an assistant at Brown for 15 years.
Sorry, pass.

For my clarification/instruction , is "associate head coach" the same as an assistant?
