I was fortunate to have been at MSG on May 8, 1970 when the Captain limped out of the tunnel to the loudest roar I have ever heard. This inspired Clyde Frazier to have a career game, 36 points, 19 assists, and the rest of this storied, unselfish team to get its first rings.

He was one of my two favorite players...with a spirit that could not be crushed. He was one of the reasons I followed the NBA way back then.
May his soul rest in peace.

Eternal gratitude for the Captain leading a team which provided my happiest moments as a Knicks fan. And, from all indications he was a good man, too. Rest in Peace, Gentle Giant.

My 4 years at HC, surrounded by New Yorkers, were quite kind to the Blue and Orange- they won it all my freshman and senior years.
Surprised to find out they didn't win one before that.

I am a lifelong Celtics fan but I like to think I can appreciate greatness on other teams. Willis Reed, Clyde Frazier, Earl Monroe, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere--what teams these were. My favorite player on these teams was Earl "the Pearl". Fans of todays NBA don't always appreciate how good these guys were. It was the golden age of centers. Willis Reed was talented and tough and would be great in today's league.

Didn't want to rub it in. Never knew they didn't win it earlier until yesterday; I always thought when they made some good draft choices (Reed/Bradley/Frazier) and some savvy trades (DeBusschere) they had rekindled some success they had before the Celtics had their long run. You never know when they'll catch lightning in a bottle again. They sure looked good the last two times they played the Celtics.

The Knicks are a tough out. Getting Jalen Brunson was huge, and I love Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks biggest problem is the knucklehead who owns them.

The current NY Knicks are not a championship caliber team. In the early '50's the Knicks were very good , made the playoffs but never won a championship. In the late 50's - 60's the Knicks were awful but they were never going to challenge the great Bill Russell Celtics teams. Post championship mid 70's-80's were a no-man's land. The rough & tumble Ewing-Oakley Knicks were very good but could not get past Houston and of course the fabulous MJ led Bulls . Still have nightmares about Starks' 0-18 shooting & Charles Smith's 5 missed layups in a row. ( He complained to the coach of an injured leg, had no lift but coach kept him in the game.) Past 25 years has been marked by unending mediocrity. The world's "most famous arena" continues to sell out and the Knicks continue to lose. And, so it goes.

Plus Dave Stallworth, who subbed for Willis in Game 7, 1970., and later, cash.

Must have known and forgotten that Willis was once the coach at Creighton.

He coached (and likely recruited) NBA center Benoit Benjamin at Creighton and you can imagine how much Coach Reed's instruction and counsel advanced Benjamin's career
