I was recently asked by a colleague why we call it “The College of the Holy Cross” vs. Holy Cross College. I did not have a good explanation for it, any thoughts from board members?

I was recently asked by a colleague why we call it “The College of the Holy Cross” vs. Holy Cross College. I did not have a good explanation for it, any thoughts from board members? One could ask why William & Mary is "College of William and Mary" and not "William and Mary College" or why it is "Indiana University" and not "University of Indiana" . My guess is that when these colleges were founded, or officially named, their leaders had to make a choice and did so.

When Bishop Fenwick founded the college, he gave it the same name as the Cathedral Church of the diocese,The Cathedral of the Holy Cross.
Today, that is the name the college is incorporated under and creating in a brand, it was selected as the formal name to use in communications to differentiate it from Holy Cross College in South Bend Indiana and Holy Cross University in New Orleans.

FWIW I believe ND formally is The University of Notre Dame. I read somewhere the university leadership wants the school to be referred to as such.

I don't think many people are aware of the "du Lac" component and I don't know that I have ever heard it referred to as such.

It is ….. THE ….College of the Holy Cross…
That school in Ohio, located in Columbus, has attempted the same introductory branding.
