Starting a new thread for Kalif’s new season with the draft coming up. News today that definitely impacts the Lions receiver room and should create more opportunity for Kalif to have a significant role in the offense once again.

I'd have to say opportunity (for Kalif) is knocking.

Was on the phone with a fellow poster talking HC hoops recruiting when he passed along this “good news” for the Lions. The Lions wide receiver corps for 2023 is anticipated to be Amon Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, Marvin Jones, Jameson Williams, Kalif & perhaps Tom Kennedy or someone drafted next week. Neither Cephus nor Berryhill was expected to make the team. There were high hopes for Williams to be fully healthy and make a big impact from Game 1. With the suspension, he can participate in OTAs and preseason practice up to the first game and then must be away from the team entirely until Week 4, can participate in team meetings but not practice (unless the NFL grants an exemption) in Weeks 4-6 and then play in Game 7.
Since Williams is projected to play more on the outside and Kalif more in the slot, I’m not sure what impact Williams’ absence will have on Kalif’s PT but it certainly shouldn’t diminish it. At the end of last season, Williams indicated that he had some interest in being involved on special teams, primarily on kickoff returns. Obviously his absence means that he is not likely to infringe on Kalif’s PT as a punt returner.

Williams was the 12th overall pick last year. He would have gotten a lot of snaps and targets. Those will be redistributed now and some of that redistribution will go to Kalif even if they are players normally used differently in the offense. Big difference in opportunity if you’re the 4th WR on a team than the 5th. Hopefully they don’t use a high draft pick on one next week.

You are in the NFL. You have already won. Why gamble?

Not a big surprise but always nice to see Kalif’s roster spot viewed as a lock well before camp even starts.
From Pride of Detroit:
Wide receiver (5) Amon-Ra St. Brown Josh Reynolds Marvin Jones Kalif Raymond Antoine Green* Trinity Benson Tom Kennedy Maurice Alexander Stanley Berryhill Chase Cota* Keytaon Thompson*
Suspended list: Jameson Williams
Jeremy: The top four receivers are basically a lock, and then it comes down to what the Lions want in WR5 (and possibly WR6). Obviously, special teams will play a big part, and it’s why Tom Kennedy just couldn’t eke out a spot last year. I’d probably give the edge to seventh-round pick Antoine Green, simply because they drafted the guy, but feels like the last spot or two will truly be won in camp.

Detroit might be the favorites to win the NFC North this season. They have four prime time games on the schedule (five if you include Thanksgiving).

From The Athletic:
10. Do the Lions have enough at WR? One underlying thought after watching the Lions is that their wide receiver room is an injury away from being in trouble. We already know Jameson Williams will miss the first six games of the season, leaving the team without its main vertical threat. But if Amon-Ra St. Brown goes down — especially during that six-game window — the Lions might have to get creative elsewhere.
Josh Reynolds, Marvin Jones Jr. and Kalif Raymond are solid secondary options, but St. Brown is the only established difference-maker. We saw what happened when he missed time a year ago. Part of me wonders if the Lions should pursue DeAndre Hopkins, for the right price, as added insurance. If not, they’d likely lean on their run game, pass-catching backs and tight ends in the event of an injury.

Or use the unused vertical threat, Kalif

They hardly target Kalif!

They hardly target Kalif! He was 3rd on team in targets and receptions, and second among WR's...granted he played all 17 games and many others did not, but he gets a decent amount of targets. His targets did decline by 7 from 2021, which is more significant when you also factor in the extra game in 2023.

And don’t forget he is #84 all-time in yards per punt return

But imo he is not targeted enough on vertical routes perhaps because of his size ?

But imo he is not targeted enough on vertical routes perhaps because of his size ? Goff, while improving as a QB, still has one of the weakest arms in the NFL.

One is not like the other -- Can someone explain this graph to me? I think the English version is that it’s measuring who gets how much separation vs man and zone. If you’re in the top right, you get a lot of separation against both. Kalif is almost literally off the chart.

Don’t the Lions coaches see this information? If so, why don’t that throw to him more often?

Apparently, their QB can't throw that far that often.

Apparently, their QB can't throw that far that often. All my high school QB's both when I was in school and now teaching can throw deeper than Goff! Certainly not as accurately or athletically considering none really sniffed the NFL (and only one played D1) but I believe there is a reason the Rams broke through once Goff was traded.
