I thought it would be interesting to take a look at how our sources of players have changed. So I checked the 2017 roster, at the end of the Tom Gilmore era, and 2023,which includes the players who have signed and will matriculate this Fall. With all our enjoyable and productive recruiting discussions there may be few surprises here....
State= Players on 2017 Roster/Players on 2023 Roster
MASS= 10/15 NH= 1/3 CT= 0/2 NY= 5/7 NJ= 7/26 PA= 7/6
MD= 3/2 VA= 0/3 NC= 2/0
GA= 10/1 FL= 12/14
IL= 11/5 OH= 1/4 MO 5/1 MICH= 0/4 KS=3/0 IN= 0/2
TX= 1/7
CA= 5/2
States with 1 player on one team and 0 on other team
ME=1/0 DC= 1/0 LA= 1/0 MN= 1/0 WI= 1/0 AZ=1/0 WY= 1/0
ONT= 0/1 RI= 0/ TN= 0/1
Observations
• Dominance of New Jersey is extraordinary –26 players on the current team • Significant increase from 10 to 15 for our home state Massachusetts • Georgia has fallen off the radar, going from 10 in 2017 to a single player today • In the Midwest, Illinois and Missouri have declined while Ohio and Michigan have increased. Kansas may have been a short term anomaly with 3 players on the 2017 team and none today • Texas appears to be a new focus with 1 player in 2017 and 7 today. I'll bet that Texas becomes even more important in coming seasons • Florida, no surprise, remains a very important source of HC players

The increased MA numbers are positive in this sense: "The Cross is Back!" And MA players are the first ones to feel the wave.
The 50% uptick in Bay Stste players isn't because MA HS FB is 50% better in six years but probably because the upper echelon of MA players are now more receptive to a better FB program at HC.

A second stringer on the 2023 squad might be a better player than a starter on the 2017 squad. Peter Oliver was recruited by Coach Gilmore (I assume), arrived in 2018 and steadily improved from a 3.8 yard per carry rushing average in 2018 to a 6.2 yard per carry average in 2022 under Coach Chesney. But the line and the QB play the defense had to account for also improved so it is hard to make exact comparisons.
I'm hoping HC is more competitive among local players and we can occasionally get a home town discount over a Monmouth or Richmond or some other competitive FCS program hundreds of miles away.
Interesting subject, BTW. I would have guessed we would have fewer MA players in 2023 than 2017 because HC would be more competitive in the stronger HS FB hotbeds. But like a pebble thrown into a pond, the ripple effect may till be felt strongest nearby.

I don’t recall ever reading that he said he changed his mind due to the coach, but I have always assumed it played a part.

When I look at recruiting, I break it down to northeast (i.e. 300 mi radius e.g. NY Nj & PA ) vs the rest of the country where our overall brand is weaker.
These 'national recruits' are going away to school & play. Of this yrs incoming group, about a third are national.

I think one also has to look at the geographic regions assigned to each coach over the relevant years. If I look at the offers for 2024, of the first 50, 24 were offers to recruits from FL / GA / TX.
I also have a sense of the first 50 for this year, HC is offering more recruits who have a bunch of FBS offers.

Perhaps Coach Vaganek has been recruiting Northern New Jersey for enough years to establish great relationships with high school coaches there and he likely is also a very persuasive salesman for the program. The rise of Texas could be due to Coach DiMichelle. Maybe the change in the number of Georgia-players is also due to a change in assigned recruiters.

Admissions staff 13 (12 FTE's with territorial assignments) to yield 700-800/yr Athletics staff - 26 D-1 teams to yield 125-150/yr? FTE's 8-10? Fball staff to yield 20- 30/yr FTE's 5-6?
