Very sad--the young man had a chance for a nice education at Dartmouth and threw it away----if he did, indeed, participate in this crime

A huge credit to every Holy Cross FB coach, captain, senior, etc. because this could happen to any team, but is less likely when there is such buy in to a common positive mission like in the HC FB program under Coach Chesney.
With the horrific accident to Buddy Teevins, the Dartmouth FB program might be missing some of the intangibles of leadership that flow down from a veteran skilled head coach and benefit the players in so many ways. We are so lucky to have head coaches like Chesney and Paulsen in place.

The last season the fellow you brought up could have played at Assumption was 2013, Coach Chesney's first season there. So he likely was recruited by a previous coach. But your post provides insight into one of many possible reasons why Coach signed an extension to stay at Holy Cross.
He has a great school to sell to great kids and he follows through by encouraging them to have it all while they are here.
Of course over time there will be occasional incidents at even the best schools with the best coaches, especially with a roster as large as FB. I hope both the young men discussed in this thread have an opportunity to turn things around and have or will do so.

We are taking the hit for society in general here: every hour that Foley spends in searching for negative items about Holy Cross is an hour that he is not annoying some other innocent community.

Sounds like the kid was looking for a substitute for a NIL deal.

Also interesting that the Dartmouth kid was at home in CO on Feb. 24th and not in Hanover. Maybe they have an early spring break?

There were two separate crimes in which he is a suspect, on different dates.in February. Dartmouth is on a quarter system, not a semester system. The winter term began Jan 4 and ended March 14. He could have been away for the winter term.

I'm not sure of that, but the Pope has stated that reading 100 Foley posts constitutes a plenary indulgence.

Asking my probation officer if I can count the time reading his posts as part of my community service hours. I have heard of stranger things. My wife went to court for an illegal left on red ticket (she claims that the light was broken.) While waiting to speak to the prosecutor, she overheard the young person in front of her trying to claim that he had completed an agreed upon ten hours of community service by helping a neigbor clean his yacht.

Anyone accused of a crime that has the possibility of jail time is provided an attorney if they can't afford one, and these moving violations are often handled by police prosecutors. The worst ones are pro se people fighting speeding tickets, sometimes bringing charts, graphs, and articles from who knows where to show that radar is unreliable. It usually doesn't work. I heard one young man say he was speeding because his pregnant wife, who was in the car, had an urge need to use a rest room. Case dismissed.

Posted this years ago, since we are on continuous digression:
My father (HC ‘42 and today would have been his 103rd birthday but died prematurely at the age of 92) worked at Grumman that was famous in WWII as the famous “iron works” because their Navy aircraft were considered so hardy against enemy fire.
One of his buddies was a radar expert and got a speeding ticket. He decides to fight it and comes in an argues to the judge by proving that police radar needed to be recalibrated on regular intervals (don’t recall how frequently) and had all kinds of data, charts, etc. Judge listened and fascinated by the education but at the end says: “thank you, Mr. X, but I have to find you guilty as the officer said you were speeding based on his observation, not his radar.” 😊

My wife went to court for an illegal left on red ticket (she claims that the light was broken.) somewhat obscure fact - In the state of Massachusetts, it is legal to take a left turn on a red light if travelling on a one way street and turning onto a one way street, if you come to a complete stop before proceeding. Same as right on red except you need one way streets. Kind of progressive for the 50th state in the union to adopt right on red

I'll repeat . . . . the insurance industry, where I worked for many decades, many investigating and managing investigations of accidents, rates the drivers in each state every year. While I haven't checked it recently, the #49 and #50 best (read: worst) drivers every year alternated between Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Rotaries will do that for you along with drivers assuming stop signs only count if you see another car coming; yield signs mean nothing; turn signals are for suckers. Jughandles in NJ are to keep the traffic departments in business.
Driver license requirements are pretty much a joke nowadays in most states.

Having lived in both MA and RI I agree. But CT, where I now live, is gaining ground. A red light in CT now seems to mean "you have another five seconds".

Think I read that the CT legislature recently passed a law allowing towns to use cameras for traffic enforcement, including red lights. If towns spend the money to set that up, things will change in those towns.

The traffic cameras are likely a big money maker. Cities hire an outside company to manage the entire matter and just collect their share of the proceeds from tickets that would not have been written without the camera system…..

Why can't we (Americans) drive in them correctly?

I googled the subject of worst drivers and one source had Massachusetts as among the safest states…. My experience, having lived in ME,MA, MN,TX, TN, GA, MO, IL, & KY is that Southern Drivers are by far the worst

Horse hockey. What was the source? The Massachusetts tourism board? Edit: I believe this may be where our disagreement comes into play. "Best/worst drivers" in my definition is accidents, while your source is probably on fatality rate and, here's a site to justify your comment: www.safewise.com/blog/safest-states-drivers/Again, from memory (always suspect), best/worst drivers in the insurance industry studies included accident rates, knowledge of driving/traffic laws and rules and other more expansive data. You're talking fatality safety. Two slightly different things. Fatalities have a lot to do with speed (open roads and higher speeds will normally generate more fatalities - physics?). My experience driving on the Garden State Parkway with a 65 mph speed limit and driving 75 mph, I was forced to the right lane as everyone else was going much faster. Troopers didn't glance at you at those speeds. RI & MA not so much. Rarely drove out west but would be willing to put money that those Jersey drivers would be slow pokes on open roads out west. Take the LIE, the "world's longest parking lot." Western part of the suburb, heavy traffic, bumper-to-bumper, stop & go. Can't get to the speed limit oftentimes. Out east, more open road and higher speeds. When I have time, don't now, will see if I can find my source material.
