Oh man, can I relate to that! In grammar school, my obsession was rounding up some guys and going into the rectory and begging the priest for the keys to the Sacred Heart parish gym. There is something about walking into an empty gym dribbling your bball, a feeling difficult to put into words. I'll leave it at that. I'll bet there's some on this Board that can relate to that.

I enjoyed the article. It brought back memories of my days at St. Joe's in Oradell, NJ. The gym was for Bingo...and only Bingo. We never got to use it because we were told we would scuff the floors. (We practiced in the Church basement with no hoops.) That never changed because sports had no place at that school. One student won an essay contest and got track and field equipment for the school. The hurdles were used in the parking lot (to direct traffic), the weights (shot and discus) were used to anchor sets on the stage. Amazing that some athletes actually emerged from those beginnings.

We had no gym at Holy Name in Brooklyn, played our games in P S 10 and practicing outside, if there was snow, we shoveled and practiced.

I looked for a photo of the Pius X gym. Didn't find one. I looked for a photo of Fr. Dowd, didn't find one oh him either. Did discover he was once a curate at my long-ago parish, St. Colman's.
In the Archdiocese of Philadelphia school system of yesteryear, the elementary schools such as Pius X, were feeder schools for the archdiocesan high schools. Pius X would have 'fed' Bonner, and, according to the records, Bonner won the city championship in hoops in 1959-60.
The year before, Overbrook won the city championship.
Kraft went on to coach Villanova, and then URI. The heights surprise me..

Wally Jones, who converted to Islam and became Wali.
As Dave Zinkoff, the Sixer PA announcer used to say, "Wally, By Golly!"

Of course, the most famous overbrook grad was Wilton Norman Chamberlain.
