I like the Green addition alot, she did a very good job at Fordham, many felt she should have gotten the job. Hopefully she will help in continuing to upgrade the roster

Green interviewed for Bucknell's open asst spot too.
Wish they had added a male coach to the mix here in one of the spots though.

This is 2023….. Holy Cross Athletics, and the composition of the staff for each of the 27 teams should be based on competence and ability of each coach to maximize the student athletes performance in competition and in the class room.
Gender or ethnicity should not be a factor in the selection process.
Welcome to Mt. St. James…Paige, Candice and Ryan.

The issue isn't one of competency (I assume all the new additions are terrific and very capable coaches), it's an issue of team culture and diversity--and keeping what worked. McCray's presence will be missed. Who knows, maybe the dynamic on staff and in the program will be even better this year. We'll see.

WBB staffs have been gender integrated from the beginning. MBB staffs not so much, none I can think of off hand. Instead of MBB integrating more, it seems like WBB is integrating less. Why?

Coach Candice Green had a great deal of support by a number of people to be retained and hired as the Head Coach of Fordham. Here are some of the comments…

Ashley O’Connor played at St. John Vianney, with Meg Cahalan and Janie Bachmann. With Fordham not hiring Candice Green as the Head Coach, she has transferred to Bucknell. Wonder if there was a scholarship open if she would be wearing purple instead of orange and blue? Also transferring to Bucknell from Fordham is Sophia Sabino who played at Red Bank Catholic. According to the Fordham board, the St. John Vianney Coach, Dawn O’Connor (Ashley’s mother) is not happy with the changes in the coaching staff at Fordham. Going forward the St. John Vianney pipeline may be focused on both HC and Bucknell. Should be a benefit to the Patriot League. fordhamsports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/2022-23Based on the accolades posted, appears to be well respected, and will be a great assistant to Coach Maureen.

Fordham had 8 go into the portal, 3 grad transfers (ND,Albany &1 TBD) the others; 2 to Bucknell, 1 to Lehigh, one to SHU & 1 to Marist. Clearly an unhappy group.

Well, last season the group (some of them) wanted the head coach fired and Fordham admin obliged. Same core wanted the interim coach (and former assistant) to stay. Looks like the admin wanted to put things back on a track under its direction this time around. I don't think they were ever going to retain Green. Nice to see her bounce back with a spot in Worcester. This is a good hire for MM.

Interim head coaches at both FU and HC were let go with winning records but also with some sort of discord in the program. Good insight of yours that in a sport like WBB that is a revenue sport but less so than MBB or FB, winning isn't everything to an AD while a sense of control and good order in the department is important to them.

Karpell’s oldest daughter just graduated from Fordham. Her younger daughter , a rising senior, committed to Fairfield a few months ago. Btw, Sophia Sabino’s mom, Tracey Sabino, runs the NJ Shoreshots AAU program, which many of the top Shore kids have played for. Three of Bucknell’s four NJ Shore players are alums.

Thank you for the correction. In cross referencing several sources, I mixed up the players mom’s.

Fair to assume that DP knew them from Fordham and put in a good word?
Also methinks HC may have bumped up the salary pool for WBB.

When HC changes men's soccer coaches again, I expect you to make a post and say Julianne Sitch deserves an interview. I'd be thrilled to see more diversity in hiring and if Ms. Sitch is the best candidate for an opening as head coach for men's soccer then absolutely she should be hired. Why wouldn't a college hire the best available candidate? My point, if it wasn't clear, is that wbb found a successful formula for its staff and has had an incredible last couple of seasons. My wish was for the staff to maintain that dynamic and hopefully its success because I believe that the diversity played a role in it. I don't follow soccer very much so I am not sure I could meet your expectation about making a post when we're in a future hiring process. But if you'll remind me if and when the College finds itself searching for a new coach, I'd be glad to advocate for the best choice regardless of gender.

Sitch just won the D-3 Men's Championship this past season with U Chicago. She was named the Denver women's coach last week, I just discovered.

More talented women coaches and that is where those women have found welcome openings. At the high school level, wonder if the number of talented women has increased significantly. 10 years ago, my high school was hiring a new coach and the women candidates were few and far between and none taken seriously because of their lack of qualifications.

Every good argument as to why women improve the dynamic of previously all or mostly all male places like country clubs, corporate boards and executive staffs, the Supreme Court, Medical Schools, etc., applies to Old School's point. MBB coaching staffs appear to be a last holdout which is mildly surprising seeing they generally pay more than WBB staffs.
Mildly surprised that women who really have no burning desire to coach men when they can coach women don't catch an interest when the same job pays 20-30% more on the men's side. Maybe at the PL level it isn't that big of a gap.

Danielle Racicot the interviewer is a graduate of Assumption and has worked at Dartmouth and Northeastern before Holy Cross. These video communications are well done.
