Rebounders? I would take Ryan Serravale as a rebounder on this team. Who wouldn't want to see Tim Szatko. Ralph had the same kind of team as CBC, weak shooters, slow pace, tough defense, but everyone could and did crash the boards and played tough. This team does not!

Now, my friend, I loved those guys as well, but if they were told not to pursue shots taken, just get back on D..... As Crosser said, I'd like to see Coach Carm compromise a bit with the rebounding philosophy.......and at some point I really wish he would just take a chance on either CLS or Z; it's almost impossible not to play PB/AnT together at times otherwise. We've seen plenty of zones before, but not one packed in like that. Need to adjust......I suppose we should give Coach Jones some credit there. I think fatigue was a factor LATE in the game.....but giving away the lead late in the first half was huge imho. Poor execution does not mean the players don't care; thats BS. Anyone that was there last night could see that. For the Turnpike Trophy lovers, the team had to sit on the bench after the game watching a presentation. HC92's kids have SO much potential. Long season; BU held serve.

Just caught up on some reading. Coach used other words but said MA was gassed from the jump. As to pressing....impossible. only at has the speed to press and with 7 guys we don't have the stamina. We keep saying we had open shots but there were so many forced shots at end of clock it wase disturbing. Two or three more years like this and coach could be looking at a sub .500 career. Women bball and hockey hammered, men bball loss. Nate, we're you watching?

Thinking some more, i'm guessing a typical Princeton team would attack a sagging zone by making the other team pay (by hitting 40% of those open looks). At the end of the day, have to shoot better.

I have never seen a team concede rebounds like this one, no matter how you look at it -20 on the rebound sheet is going to equal losses in many games. (Even when your opponent doesn't score a FG in last 11 min, totally rediculous) RW used a short bench. Teams were not great shooters, used the shot clock, were not super fast. But we're great defenders and rebounders, and that made up for their weaknesses, I just don't see that out of CBC's teams.

With most fast paced offensive teams far more reliant on transition 3s than in the RW years, coaches like Bennett of UVA also do not prioritize offensive rebounding. I watched the Louisville game where he completely stopped any Louisville transition baskets. That philosophy is to get all defenders back to prevent all transition opportunities, 2s and 3s. So you may disagree, but CBC is not the only slow paced coach who does not emphasize offensive rebounding. The problem vs BU was in poor defensive rebounding, as well as the shooting woes.

Problem not just offensive rebounding. But when you take as many crazy threes st the end of the shot clock, you need to have a plan to rebound or just get a 30 sec violation. Last night was nauseating!

As usual the defense played well enough to win but this team is just so offensively challenged nothing is going to come easily. We will not win many games that Charles and Alexander score 8 and 9 points respectively. Those two along with Champion need to be consistent double figure scorers if we are going to win games. Why anyone would play anything but zone against us is beyond me. A zone virtually takes Benzan out of the game, makes Floyd almost useless, results in AT taking more shots at the end of the shot clock, and forces an inconsistent shooting team into relying almost solely on 3 point shots. In addition we don't try to take advantage of a weakness of the zone rebounding by pursuing missed shots. Why Carmody will not at least try CLS and MZ is confusing unless he feels that the potential gains offensively will be offset by their shortcomings on the defensive end. It looks like there will be a ton of close games in the PL this year and we are going to have to find a way to make the plays at the end of the game to win rather than lose these games.

I did not see many crazy 3s at the end of the shot clock. Rather many open 3s that were missed. Many missed 3s create long rebounds where guards usually are.we do not want our 5'8" guards trying to rebound, but rather getting back quickly on D.

Next year, who will rebound? We need to recruit big men who can play in the paint and rebound shots that don't go in and rebound on the defensive end. Is there any hope for the future, none if we continue to recruit the type of players that we have been going after, mostly small guards and mid-size forwards.

Well, we do have a couple of decent sized guards coming in next September in 6-4 Kyle Copeland and 6-5 Austin Butler

What does offensive strategy have to do with whether HC presses or not? Pressing would result in (1) turnovers that lead to easy baskets and (2) increasing the tempo of the game so teams cannot just play a packed in zone against us. Carmody's style is based on the PO, which is useless against a zone. Without the PO, we become a very weak team. ....and a layup drill for the other team if they break it consistently...and gassed guys without other replacements even more gassed. Not to put you down, yes, try the press or the 1-3-1 (see below) at some point. Speed the game up for a brief while; because the rest of the game is at a slow pace it's got a decent chance to work for a while (but, IMO, for just a while). Just like they tried the 1-3-1 for a couple of possessions. When I saw Benzan as the bottom guy instead of Eric Green, I cringed...and it didn't work. Some real oddities in that game. #21 hit 3 threes in a row for BU to start the game...and ended up with 10 points. HC got all of 4 offensive rebounds, and I'm 100% sure they got half of them on the same trip down the court. In fact, they may have gotten 3 on that possession.

With 16m left in the first half, Benzan, Charles and Benzan (again) corralled o-boards on three missed shots, same possession. Husek then missed the fourth shot of the possession on an errant three. But, as hoops noted, the more serious issue was with the rebounding at the defensive end - no better example than in the last 1:30 or so when we were within four, and BU snared a pair of offensive rebounds that effectively sealed the deal. A good defensive rebounding team gets 75% of an opponent's misses - Holy Cross is getting 70% (250th in D1) and got less than 2/3 last night.

[ It's a layup drill against our halfcourt defense right now. TEAMS ARE SHOOTING 57% ON 2 FG'S AGAINST US!!!I'm sick of this "we don't have the personnel to do anything" crap. If it's all about personnel in our "system," why did we hire a coach who apparently hates recruiting (per source from Northwestern)?

BU made a bad pass and ended up with the ball around their own foul line and was in jeopardy of a 10 second violation (they got it over with the shot clock at 21). But it actually resulted in a 2 on 1 and put the BU guy right there for the rebound of a missed shot.

I love the passion of the posters here. I really do. However, everyone better take a few deep breaths and relax a bit because IMO this is going to be a VERY LONG season.
From this point forward I would expect, now that we are in PL play, that we will be well scouted and will see zone defenses close to 100% of the time. If a team goes MTM against us, it most likely will be for only short spurts because we got hot from 3 point range and they want to change the defensive look for a few possessions. In addition, with the zone the PO with its back door cuts will pretty much be nullified.
So think about what that means. We only went 7 deep last night and 3 of the 7 (Ant, Benzan, and JF) are very poor outside shooters. When all 3 are in the game at one time, we only have 2 offensive threats on the court. Not good.
Unless CLS or MZ step up, take some minutes off the shoulders of the starters, and add 7-9 points a game combined, we will be in very tough shape offensively most nights this year.
Bottom line, this club will struggle to get to .500. It's simply too dependent on 3 pt shooting and that is not a winning formula for any team, even those with better shooters than we have.
Looking at the program overall, I am not ready to write off Carmody as a poor recruiter. The 5 kids coming in next year look promising and they will get a boatload of playing time as freshmen. We should know by midseason next year what the next few years will look like...not before.

Twice (that I saw) the defense stop BU and BU got the ball after a scramble and scored. Each was just the way things go on some nights. Just my opinion, but I feel the game was lost at the end of the first half, when instead of maintaining a lead into the half or adding to it, some poor shots and bad ball movement gave BU the halftime lead.

It cost us the go ahead basket by BU before the half. I'd love to know what Carmody said to him at half. Physical mistakes I can tolerate. Dumb plays like that I find really tough to swallow.

OK, if gave you these stats, which team do you think won the game?
Team A 10 steals Team B 3 Team A 14 assists Team B 12 Team A 7 turnovers Team B 17 Team A 10 steals Team B 3 Team A 33.3% of threes Team B 31.8% Team A 72.7% of FTs Team B 60.0% Team A 11 points off turnovers Team B 4
Now, factor in rebounds Team A 27 Team B 47
We hit 42.1% of our 3s in the first half (8 of 19), we hit 21.4% in the 2nd (3 of 14).
Great 1st 18 minutes of the first half (exception being 0 points from MA), went south after that. Started out OK in the beginning of the 2nd half and then faded.
MH still looking good: 4 of 7 3s, 5 of 10 FGs, 4 rebs, 2 assists 0 turnovers and 1 block. His fouls were not all bad. Fouled one guy (Allston?) in the act of shooting and he went 0 for 2 on his FTs. A "good" foul.
The team is consistently inconsistent, that's why I feared a loss in this game. I believe as the season progresses, the team will gel and improve. But we need more from the bench.

Amen-- we had that six point lead and I said to myself "let's see if we can have a 5 point lead at half", i.e. maybe we get a 2 ptr while BU gets a 3. Instead we played poorly and gave it away with the real puzzler being MA taking the shot with 10-12 seconds left instead of with 2 seconds left, giving BU the ball again and of course BU scored. I guess it's easy to criticize and if MA had nailed it I would have high-fived him, still....... Looks like I duplicated Crusader1970's thoughts--was typing at the same time

To add to the chorus. From 32-26 to 32-33. Including RC committing his third foul and 4 missed 3 attempts (Benzan, Champion, MA and MA) MA's last miss was about 3-4 seconds too soon in a one shot situation. BU ran it up and got a fast break layup at the buzzer. Very disappointing that the team was caught so flatfooted on that particular play. I always think those one shot situations are a game within a game (and they're even more important in high school ball because there are 3 of them and not one). The score is 0-0, you have the ball; you want to do no worse than end up 0-0.

although that was a bad decision by Mal,. we still took the lead in the second half before imploding we will never know what was the actual turning point, but in a close game, it rarely occurs in the first half how about 2 fg in the last 11 minutes ?
