Guys.....my post was completely tongue-in-cheek. How could you possibly think I was serious. Nonetheless it does illustrate my contention that sarcasm is dangerous because if it not picked up it leads to wasted argument.

NAd, Your boy, Bill McCarthy did not seem as bad tonight. Was he ? I thought he was ok; but let's let HCFC45 weigh in.... Yes, we did snatch a "W" from the jaws of defeat! Tomorrow the box score will still be the same that we won 51 - 50! With about 7 minutes left in the game, my son-in-law turned to me and said that this will be a 50 - 49 game and for awhile towards the end, it certainly looked like his prediction would come through with us on the losing end!
However, HC had 2 fouls to waste! On the third OOB play, I turned to one of our fellow crossporters and said: "this inbounds is going long"! Sure enough it did. The Navy played caught the ball above the foul line and AT thankfully had the wherewithal to immediately wrapped him up! Navy misses the 1 - 1 and the rest is history!
Probably the best game that I've seen Bill McCarthy do in which he had nothing to do with the outcome!
Congrats to the team and PB for a gutsy performance!

The ending was a prime example of why to continue play and not call a time out with seconds left. The chance that we would have gotten as good a shot as Pat's if we had called a TO was very slim.

Got it this view also shows that Pat had to go off his left (wrong) foot for this lefty drive, more difficult

Interesting stat We took exactly the same number of 2s and 3s in each half, 14 twos, 11 threes. We made 3 twos in the first, 7 in the second We made 3 threes in the first, 5 in the second

It was a W. Well done Yet, everyone who was ever in the Hart Center when it was packed has to be depressed that it is empty. The video is sad. But, just watch and listen again, and listen to the audio. The Crowd reaction to a game winning shot with .01 remaining doesn't sound like a high school; game, it sounds like a middle school game.
I swear there were more fannies in those bleacher seats for the 1976 AA HC intramural finals between the football players and Healy dorm.

Do we know why the game was scheduled for 7PM? A 3Pm or 4PM game on a day most people have off from work would have attracted more fans. 7PM when people are getting ready to go back to work the next day is a recipe for a small crowd.

in the postgame presser, Carmody basically said he doesn't know where to go to fix the offense. Nice to get the W, but this game was painful to watch.

I've always felt that you only call time out when it gets below 3 or 4 seconds because you have to go 94 feet (even more so with the old rules where the clock didn't stop after a made field goal). It may also be better in that situation that the offense is moving fast up the court and the defense, while ready, is back and often stationary. I think Blaney liked to play it that way, too. Remember it working some times and some times not. Anyone recall what Ralph's philosophy was?

Then there's the useful adage (sometimes attributed to Dick Motta) that "players win games, coaches lose games." Many (most?) good coaches trust their players to make decisions in situations that they've repeatedly practiced and prepared for, rather than overthink.

Now in women's games, maybe taking time outs is a more sound strategy...you gain 50 feet just like the NBA.

Hops- IMHO it was not "a good shot" in the sense of a high percentage shot. He had at least two tall defenders in his face. PB's athleticism made it a great shot. We criticize AT for his kamikazee dives into tall defenders. Also, remember how we crucified CMB for throwing his players under the bus by always talking about missed shots. CBC is doing the same thing. He doesn't know what to do about it? How about giving CLS significant minutes. MH attempted exactly ONE 3. Did CBC tell him to look for the 3? How about insisting that MZ keeps shooting 3's till he starts making them. Practice time is no substitute for real game time. (Please don't start accusing me of hate talk against CBC. Is he immune from some criticism?)

The "play" was for AT to go coast to coast. Of course that didn't happen. It was PB to the tin with the finish.

I watched the game on the online feed. It's the first time watching this team "live" since last year's televised games in the NCAA tournament. This team does not pass the eyeball test when compared to the Ralph Willard teams I would watch in the mid 2000s. The game looked like a pickup game. HC missed tons of open shots, particularly in the first half. If these guys can't make open 3s, they should take two dribbles up towards the hoop and take a closer shot. They certainly had the time to. It is frankly surprising that these guys got scholarships to play basketball when they simply can't hit shots.
Beyond that, the offensive set was awful for the game. Aside from a few dribble drives, HC ran a 3-high against the zone after beating a zone press. This isn't a picking or pick-and-roll offense... but then again, it didn't seem to have anything. The 1 would pass to the wing, and then fill the "house" on the weak side... and then players stand still. The three high rotated until there was no time left in the shot clock, and then we'd attempt a shot. Three times we turned it over without even shooting the ball (dropping the ball out of bounds, dribble off of a foot).
Second, don't let the rebounding statistic excuse this team's continued lack of fundamentals in that category. You can appreciate some of the hustle-- when a shot went up, two to three players would jump for the ball-- but that could be said about Navy too. We are awful at boxing out. We spend too much time on defense eyeballing the basketball, instead of staying on a man. Twice we got beat on some really basic backdoor cuts for layups, including one as the shot clock expired. We don't pay attention to a man (should be done, even still in a zone), and get caught following the ball too much. Shot goes up, find a man first. We will not win the rebounding battle often if that is the case. Additionally, a ton of missed shots mean a ton of rebounding opportunities. Long shots create long rebounds... so our awful shooting left more chances for us to grab the boards.
