"ALAS" ? Receive a 19th century novel for Christmas ? Funny!!! Oddly enough it is a word I have often used in writing but not in conversation. I did get some good books for Christmas--reading now about the clandestine aspects of WWII: espionage, code breaking, deception, spy craft, resistance fighters, etc. The book comes from the WWII Museum in Boston and I did not even know one existed there--wish I could visit. Title?

I received the new, acclaimed bio of Hitler by german historian Volker Ullrich. Thus far, it is very well done. Just when you thought nothing new could be written about him, here is some interesting info.

Reading Edw. Rutherfurd's "New York" (as in NYC). Historical fiction, similar to Michener. He wrote "Sarum," about the Salisbury Plain in England, Stone Henge, Salisbury Cathedral, etc., was a best seller years ago.

I did get some good books for Christmas--reading now about the clandestine aspects of WWII: espionage, code breaking, deception, spy craft, resistance fighters, etc. The book comes from the WWII Museum in Boston and I did not even know one existed there--wish I could visit. Title? "The Secret History of World War II"- Spies, Codebreakers & Covert Operations. By Neil Kagan and Steven Hyslop-published by National Geographic. It came from Barnes & Noble The book states that the WWII Museum in Boston was started as a private museum in 2000 by Executive Director Kenneth Rendell and was opened to the public in 2013. Mr Rendell began collecting WWII artifacts and documents in 1959 when many people were throwing them away (I remember we had a lot of my father's WWII Army stuff at our house as did 8 or 10,000,000 other veterans) . The book suggests that the museum has the largest collection in the world and it must be something if it is bigger than the fabulous WWII museum in New Orleans. Sorry to divert this important thread. I've been thinking we should have a book recommendation thread in the general topics section......

Thanks. Book recommendations and reviews are always welcome. Even if it is a slight diversion in a thread.

Not off to a good start today....
BU 75 LU 61 (At one point BU was ahead 62 - 39!)
AU 67 CU 64 (OT) One of the worse games I have ever seen. Think that AU at one point was 3 for 20 on FT's in the second half!
