To the Dodgers for 10 years/700 million......Insanity They are likely to sell a ton of merchandise in Japan now and with him being a two way player he might be worth it.

Think how much greater Ohtani’s value would be with no DH…,,

Think how much greater Ohtani’s value would be with no DH…,, Please explain If there were no DH, when he pitched he'd be batting for his team as a tremendous offensive weapon while the opponent would likely have a weak-hitting pitcher batting.

For the Angels, he DH'd on days he didn't pitch. Without a DH, Ohtani's bat would be either out of the line-up on days he didn't pitch, or he would need to learn a different position. True on days he pitched, his team would have an advantage while the other team had a near automatic out when the pitcher batted. However, the other 4 out of 5 days, I think the DH enhances his value

He has played a very few games in the outfield. With his bat, the team would find a place in the field (RF or 1B) fir him to ensure he bats every day

With his arm (when healthy), speed and athleticism, I’m confident he’d be a better than average outfielder if a team needed him there.

For 700mm he should be ambidextrous and throw lefty in the outfield.

He played 64 games in the outfield for the Nippon Ham Fighters and committed 1 error. Stats suggest that he had decent range.

It’s been reported and confirmed that much of the $700 mill will be deferred - he and his family will be recvg payments well into this century As for my take on these salaries, the higher (crazier) they go the less inclined I am to spend the $ to attend a game in person

I guess there is some confusion as to my statement about Ohtani. Let me try to clarify. His value would be greatest In a league with no designated hitter because he could (1) play outfield for 132 games AND (2) pitch 30 games and bat as a .275/ 40 homer guy while the other team is forced to bat a .150/0 homer guy. His team would have a tremendous advantage in those games

So much for getting a little bit of a discount because you'd only have to pay one player, instead of two. Now the Dodgers are getting two players in one, but paying him two players' salaries. The issue is obviously injured. Your star DH normally doesn't have to risk a chance of injury while pitching. Your star pitcher normally doesn't have to risk a chance of injury while batting, or running the bases. Ohtani is subject to both. I hope the Dodgers have good insurance (actually, I don't care if they go out of business).

However, the other 4 out of 5 days, I think the DH enhances his value He cannot pitch nor play the field in 2024. How much of an increment will his offense be versus the guy they had at DH in 2023?

UCL injury. He will be able to DH, though. Fwiw, Ohtani played 50+ games in the OF as an 18-year-old rookie with the Nippon Ham Fighters in 2013 - eighty-three chances, seven assists, one error

68 of the 70 million will be deferred every year so the Dodgers can avoid the luxury tax hit - I think MLB should do something about that
