Final summary of most nationally recognized players preseason - This is simply an indication of what teams return proven FCS playmakers. While there’s a lot more than individual talent that makes a good team; this is just one signal of what we will be up against this season.
Fordham (7) - QB, RB, WR, DL, DE, LB, CB
Laffy (6) - QB, RB, WR, OT, LB, Saf
URI (3) - 2 DL, LB
UNH (3) - 2 DE, CB
Harvard (3) - RB, Saf, CB
Yale (1) - CB
Bryant (1) - DL
Colgate (1) - WR
Lehigh (1) - LB
Holy Cross (1) - RB

Joe Conlin does less with more talent than anyone in the league.

Fordham has lost 7 straight to HC since 2017 including last two crazy finishes and the Spring 2021 Sluka debut 2nd half turnaround.
He has to be thinking this will be the year to break the streak. Almost inexcusable if HC makes it 8 in a row this season.

Fordham and soon Richmond really help elevate PL FB. With leagues in turmoil from coast to coast, the PL has to be getting among the most benefit from well chosen associate members.

It has been a while since we were in this position. While it is reassuring to some that our presumptive starting QB does have a total of two career starts (both wins) one can't help noting those were close victories v suspect Patriot competition.

"In Joe Pesansky We Trust!" Oh, and Dan Curran too.

Pride, Was not one of your “suspect Patriot competition” wins against the team at the top of the list you quoted ? Your continued skepticism about Joe P. has been noted in your frequent posts, including one you unsuccessfully tried to quickly erase.

We beat Fordham (2-4 PL record) 49-47…and Fordham returns 7 FCS playmakers. Two things can be true at the same time. As far as Joe P is concerned, I haven’t seen enough to be convinced he is an above average PL QB. (His other career start was a 28-24 victory over Lehigh [1-5 PL record] ) Certainly you may have seen otherwise.

A big unknown factor regarding our 3 CAA opponents will be how their new portal players turn out. URI has brought in several FBS guys (most notably 2 P4 QBs).
UNH and to a lesser extent Bryant have brought in several very good FCS players as grad transfers. I’m waiting to see the final fall rosters of those three schools especially.
Who do they bring in and what was that player’s production from his previous school? Even though Helms was a career backup at Clemson, he earned a scholarship and was often competing for the #2 spot.

Did he ever get it? If not, his "competing" for #2 is not worth nearly as much.

Did he ever get it? If not, his "competing" for #2 is not worth nearly as much. Yes he did. At certain points in time over his 4 years at Clemson. Played in 9 career games. ”Original walk-on turned scholarship recipient who impressed with a two-touchdown performance at Georgia Tech as a true freshman in 2020 ... completed 23-of-37 passes for 218 yards and two scores in addition to rushing four times for 13 yards in 79 career snaps over nine games at Clemson from 2020-23.”

Hopefully new portal arrivals to our opponents will have a more positive effect later in the season after working out the kinks in the OOC portion of the schedule.
HC has a new head coach, but after arriving here shortly after last season ended and blending in so well it's like he's been here forever.
But through nobody's fault, with key performers playing at JMU, UNLV and elsewhere, it could be a rough start.

Haven't seen enough of Helms against suspect ACC competition (re Georgia Tech). We'll see how our secondary fares. Only up from here with this group at HC!

I am not up to speed on URI 🏈 updates, but as I understand it, not a given that Helms will start. They also brought in a transfer from Virginia Tech….last I heard

Apparently, the Va. Tech transfer Devin Farrell , #2 qb on the RI roster last year will be the starter barring some out-this -world find on the roster. Farrell is an FBS level QB. He's mobile and has a good arm. He will be a tough test for HC's D.

We’ve been over this several times in this thread (just a few posts above) and others. Fleming and Murphy brought in Hunter Helms from Clemson to be the starter. It’s his to lose to the VA tech transfer.
I’m guessing we see more of Helms with Farrell as a situational dual threat substitute.

Nope - he will be a RS sophomore this season. They haven’t updated his 2024 bio yet. 2022 true freshman at VA Tech 2023 RS frosh at URI 2024 RS Soph at URI
