If you find yourself on the Outer Cape tomorrow, the Provincetown Brewing Company is hosting watch parties for all the women's games and they gave HC a nice plug in their announcement.

I’m sure they will but how much is used is by the announcers is a completely different matter Last night the color announcer said that BP-C was the PL Student-Athlete of the year. But it was annoying that the entire 4th quarter, all the announcers were talking about was Caitlan Clark, not the game they were supposedly announcing......nice problem to have, I guess

TARA SULLIVAN Holy Cross women’s basketball is experiencing the Caitlin Clark Effect firsthand By Tara Sullivan Globe Staff,Updated March 22, 2024, 3:00 p.m.

Caitlin Clark took a confetti shower after her Iowa team defeated Nebraska in the Big Ten tournament final March 10.ABBIE PARR/ASSOCIATED PRESS At 3 p.m. Saturday, the center of the women’s basketball universe will be Iowa. The cavernous confines of Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be filled to the brim, 15,000-plus rabid fans eagerly awaiting the first step of Caitlin Clark’s final NCAA Tournament journey. The first-round game will be televised nationally on ABC, one more piece of what has come to be known as the Caitlin Clark Effect.
An effect that has now officially reached Massachusetts.
In booking their chance to face the Hawkeyes by winning a play-in game Thursday night, Holy Cross finds itself center stage in sports’s biggest show. The 16th-seeded Crusaders may be a David to the No. 1 seed Goliath in Iowa, but for the small private school from Worcester, the chance to enter the orbit of this ever-expanding universe is like a gift from the basketball gods. Hard as it will be to defend the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer, tough as it will be to topple a top-ranked team on its home court, this is a joyride through a story that continues to captivate the nation.

It’s Holy Cross coach Maureen Magarity getting to shake Clark’s hand in the hallway of the arena and calling it a “fan girl” moment.

It’s senior guard Cara McCormack doing her best Clark impression in Thursday night’s blowout win over Tennessee-Martin, lifting her diminutive 5-foot-3-inch frame to a career-best seven 3-pointers.
It’s Maureen’s father Dave Magarity, the longtime, now retired coach of Army women’s basketball, running into Clark and her boyfriend, Iowa men’s player Connor McCaffery, in the training room and saying hello to McCaffery, son of his childhood friend and Iowa men’s coach Fran McCaffery but smiling at Clark and thinking, “The poor kid, she’s got to have bodyguards around her!”

It’s Holy Cross senior forward Janelle Allen seeing her TikTok post go viral, one in which she and her teammates marvel as they first take the Iowa court, comparing the 15,500-seat arena with their 3,536-seat home (4,000 with standing room), and it’s Allen relishing the chance to visit with her brother, Iowa football player Brian Allen.
It’s Maureen having the platform to wax poetic about her senior leading scorer, Bronagh Power-Cassidy, the Dublin native and Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, knowing that the many new Google searches and information requests as a result bring attention to a fabulous player and increase exposure for her program.
It’s Dave and his wife Rita being so ready to support the oldest of their three children that they turned their car around on the way home from the Patriot League championship win over Boston University, aborting the drive to Delaware to return to Massachusetts and board the team’s charter flight to Des Moines. It was a drive that necessitated a stop at West Point to see middle daughter Katie, do some laundry, and convince Katie and her husband Chris, the Army baseball coach, to take care of their beloved goldendoodle Rudy.

It’s an entire roster of Holy Cross players bouncing off the court after beating UT-Martin, finally able to discuss out loud what they were all thinking, chattering about the sight of Clark and her teammates in the stands scouting their game, knowing, as McCormack put it, that they were closing in on “the biggest stage we’ll ever play in.”

Coach Maureen Magarity has her team on a big stage this week.MATTHEW HOLST/GETTY It’s the memory of the Holy Cross contingent’s attendance at Tuesday night’s NIT men’s opener, when Iowa beat Kansas State, and knowing that unlike that game, Dave said, “There’s not going to be one empty seat on Saturday.”
It’s recognizing the exponential growth in women’s college hoops in just the few years since his retirement after the 2020 season, and knowing his daughter would be coaching in the epicenter of the explosion Saturday. “Of all the places you could be at this point in the history of women’s basketball, to be here, on center stage, on national TV, ABC, it’s amazing,” Dave said.
It’s Maureen getting a laugh out of one text in particular from the hundreds filling up her phone, from a coaching friend at perennial power UConn with this advice on stopping Clark: “Just take away her right, you’ll be fine.” As if it were that easy.
It’s Maureen having the chance to tour so many of Iowa’s other sports facilities — never mind the women’s volleyball locker room they get to use, complete with lounge areas and electronic white boards — and hear from every coach how much Clark has brought eyeballs to their own teams, too.

It’s the visiting Holy Cross coaching staff contemplating a shopping trip for new outfits or appointments for hair and makeup before the ABC appearance, mainstream coverage unlike anything the Patriot League usually gets. “No disrespect to ESPN+ but to be on ESPN2 [for the play-in game], we were freaking out,” Maureen said.
It’s all of it, a moment to be relished, cherished, remembered.
“I don’t think anything will prepare us for what we are about to step into,” Magarity said during a quickly arranged Zoom call Friday, just one more slice of evidence of the interest in this game. “That’s awesome. That’s where women’s basketball is now.
“This team will be focused and competitive and ready to play. At the end of the day, we’re playing arguably the best player of all time, and that’s really going to be cool.
“Hopefully we’ll show up and represent not only our program, but the college as a whole, the Patriot League, and the state of Massachusetts.”

Holy Cross whipped Tennessee-Martin, 72-45, in a First Four game Thursday night at Carver. The Crusaders got out to a 45-24 lead by halftime and cruised behind 12 3-pointers.
Cara McCormick hit 7-of-10 3-pointers in that game and led all scorers with 23 points.
Bronagh Power-Cassidy leads Holy Cross at 16.7 points per game.
The Crusaders won the Patriot League regular-season championship (with an 11-7 league mark), then followed that with the league tournament title.
Iowa is a 1-seed in the Albany-2 Region. The Hawkeyes’ previous two 1-seeds came in 1988 and 1992.
One-seeds have a 115-1 record against 16-seeds since the NCAA expanded to 64 teams in 1994.
Caitlin Clark leads the nation in scoring (31.9 points per game) and assists (8.9 per game). She has totaled 3,771 points in her career.
A win would send Iowa to its second consecutive 30-win season. Last year’s team earned a school-record 31 victories.
The Hawkeyes are making their 30th NCAA appearance and have an all-time tournament record of 33-29. Holy Cross is in its 14th tournament and owns a 2-13 all-time mark.
This is the first meeting between the two programs.
West Virginia (24-7) and Princeton (25-4) play at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

HCMBB vs. Michigan in March 1977 or HCFB vs. SDSU in December 2022 it may be the most watched HC sporting event, period Has to be the Michigan game...so many fewer stations, higher probability TV's tuned in. Yes Iowa and Clark are incredibly popular, but there is a ton of alternate programming thanks to being up against Men's tourney. Number will still be huge though.

Father Markey is our Sister (can't remember her name) from Loyola of Chicago. He played with Cousy and Heinsohn then chose the Jesuits over the NBA. Hope he is healthy and there. That would be 103 year old Sister Jean out here at Loyola Chicago.

Holy Cross money may come in late. I guess if the spread narrows by game time, more money was bet on HC to cover before tip off. It will be interesting to watch.

That would be 103 year old Sister Jean out here at Loyola Chicago. Class of '53 Father Markey should be in his early 90's. I saw him a few years ago when Bob Cousy spoke in the lower Kimball auditorium to promote his book. I saw Father guiding Cooz and his daughter into the lower entrance to Kimball on the opposite side of the building as the regular entrance to the auditorium, and followed them in. While Bob's daughter assisted Bob, Father appeared spry as a cat needing no assistance. Hope he is well and active.

Congrats on the win Thursday! Great performance I say this as the world's sickest AU fan: I hope your squad enjoys every f'in minute today. National TV, in front of a sold-out crowd, against the best player in the country this season and one of the best to ever lace 'em up. Soak it all in. It's a once-in-a-lifetime moment for your team and your school and your coach (and, by extension, for the PL). Forget the score, whatever it is. Have fun! Will be rooting for you.

You are a great fan of American and the PL. Albany WBB lost in the American East final and finished 25-6 before losing to Colgate in the WBIT. Vermont was 22-10 after beating Albany, earning the NCAA auto-bid and a 13 seed. That really hems in teams in conferences like the PL and AE as only having the auto bid as a way to Crack the 68 team NCAA tournament, unfortunately. The eight team PL gave every school a better shot at the NCAA, but we appreciate having BU nearby and I assume American fans like having another Maryland team in the conference. Three teams in the DMV must be the most of any D-1 conference.

While Iowa's scoring prowess versus top (and otherwise) women's programs is well established this year (90+ ppg), I have some concerns about our ability to put it in the hoop today. Beyond the nerves and the hostile environment, we're just not used to trying to score against six-footers who are light on their feet.
Given her height (listed at 5-3) and low release I don't think Cara McCormick will be able to bomb away with open threes from a reasonable distance like she did last game.
Beating the spread (38.5 ?) will be a challenge.
