Cardoso was named the MVP on the podium but Holly Rowe interviewed other players but not Cardoso. Wonder why I was struck by that as well...wonder if it was a language issue, but I wold find that a little hard to believe

Since it is on ABC (v ESPN) this game (SC v Iowa) might smash the viewership of Iowa’s previous two games. Watching the game now, SC’s tall center looks very tall out there in the middle. Question: why wasn't this game scheduled closer to prime time, say 6pm? I think that historically, with the exception of the Super Bowl/NFL sunday night prime time has been unpredictable with re: to ratings

Thought -- even though the NCAA tourney is over, perhaps Holy Cross and UCONN could capitalize on "striking while the irons hot" and schedule a "New England Women's Basketball Championship" game at the DCU Center this coming weekend. Bueckers v. Powers-Cassidy. Would be a nice little bump in economic activity for downtown Worcester.

Getting back to NCAA tournament ratings, I don't know how the formula for distributing revenue to leagues or teams Works but hopefully it's a fortunate year for Holy Cross to have played two games in this tournament. Based on no knowledge, my guess is that payouts are pre-determined and not a function of ratings. There would have to be some sort of incentive clause between the NCAA and TV saying TV would have to pay extra if certain ratings goals are achieved. For that to happen TV would have likely hit up the advertisers for a similar incentive clause. My foundationless guess is that TV has a multi-year deal in place with the NCAA with a set payout for each year written into the contract. ABC might have recognized the Caitlin Clark effect and charged the advertisers more this year than in the past. I am once again guessing TV ads are not sold as far in advance as TV rights to sporting events. If schools are getting a financial windfall from this, it will be during the next TV contract. It will be very interesting to see if this is a ratings blip from Caitlin Clark's publicity that will return to norm in the future, or if this is the start of a trend to greater interest in women's college basketball

In an amusing to me side note, a well known person discussing the importance of of this positive spotlight on women's sports said
I'm pretty sure the Lady Crusaders were in the bracket in 1985, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, and 2007 - all before 2022
DIsclaimer - I think in 2022, the women's tournament got permission to refer to the tournament with the copywritten phrase "March Madness"

Crazy to think they needed permission. Some people in charge must have viewed the women's tournament like the Para Olympics. I wonder if HC MBB and WBB coaching staffs made it to the respective final fours?

I wonder if HC MBB and WBB coaching staffs made it to the respective final fours? Probably because CBS didn't want the logo seen on screen on Disney/ESPN networks broadcasting the women's games. More about that I imagine than "sexism". Equally silly -- the Ford logo having to be taped over on all 63,000 seats in the football stadium in Phoenix where the Final Four is being held. All because they don't want Ford to get free advertising since they're not a March Madness sponsor.

There have been a few less-than-welcoming social media comments. I have my doubts as to whether she is a good fit in today's WNBA (not talking playing ability) and not at all sure the WNBA (and their veteran players and alums) realizes her success is their succe$$.

Will HC women's bball experience any momentum with the boost in overall popularity of the women's game ? I'm referring to recruiting better players and attendance at the Hart increasing

Why wouldn't she open herself up to the highest bidding professional leagues in the world? Russia is out but China, the Middle East, Europe, Japan all understand the power of her brand and have flung huge sums at other global superstars. Why give the WNBA a take it or leave it monopoly? Why not rest her weary bones until the start of the traditional basketball season in the Fall, not the late Spring right after her grueling college season? Spend time resting, relaxing, graduating and marketing with sponsors over the Spring and Summer. Dubai would probably create a team/league for Clark. Why should she let the less magnetic rest of the WNBA drag her down to their level of popularity? She wouldn't lose her U.S. based sponsors by playing overseas, or if she did she could replace them.

FB did it just with their performance without FCS FB itself having any specific catalyst. WBB has three straight years of post-season play, starting to rival FB's four straight. Don't expect lines outside the Hart, of course. An increase of 10% in attendance, ESPN+ viewership and mentions of HC in the new mid-major WBB media (Blogs/websites/YouTube channels like in FCS) would be fabulous and follow a similar progression with HC FB. If more young girls followed Clark in D-1 BB, their local outlet for D-1 WBB is the Hart Center.

Yep, kind of "now or never" time as far as the WNBA becoming something beyond a league that's subsidized by its male counterpart. Hope that the "Clark effect" translates from college to pro ball and she packs out arenas. Interestingly, the Indiana Fever have the #1 pick. Caitlin boyfriend is currently a low level assistant with the Indiana Pacers. Connor McCafferey, son of Iowa Men's Head Coach and former Siena HC Fran McCaffery.

When Clark is drafted she has no obligation to sign. I recall the WNBA having a salary cap. I'd love to see her give the WNBA competition for her signature, but maybe her sponsors incentivize her to play in the U S.A. and be followed by American media to keep up her brand value.

Don't know about the word 'dismiss' but it would be wise for the WNBA, veteran WNBA players, and alums to bend over backwards to be as welcoming as possible to Caitlyn Clark and her fans. Messages like this don't fall into the category of 'bending over backwards": "Reality is coming," Taurasi told ESPN's Scott Van Pelt. "You look superhuman playing against some 18-year-olds but you're going to come play with some grown women that have been playing professional basketball for a long time."www.si.com/college/2024/04/06/diana-taurasi-blunt-message-caitlin-clark-wnba-careerWhy Taurasi thought it was a good idea to single out Cailyn Clark for this sort of comment is beyond me. In these social media times (and one suspects CC's fans are reading social media ) the wise memo to the field might be along the lines of "If you've got nothing good to say...".

The fading star gloms onto the arc of the shooting star. I'm a 20+ year fan of Taurasi but the flash bulbs are following Caitlin Clark now so why not get in on the attention. Good marketing for the Phoenix Mercury who are already hyping a Taurasi-Clark rivalry.

"Why wouldn't she open herself up to the highest bidding professional leagues in the world?" Well, for one thing...safety. Another might be better endorsement money (which she has already started collecting) if she is seen regularly in the US.

In the WNBA not much. In any of the male Big leagues you don't want to risk an injury during your final college year, thus the sad trend of players who skip Bowl games to avoid injury.
