Villanova has come a long way -- www.cbsnews.com/news/the-financial-impact-of-championship-basketball/"Athletic success has surely helped boost both colleges' popularity with prospective students as much as it burnishes their brands with benefactors. About 8,500 students applied to Villanova when it earned its first title in 1985, and that figure hit an all-time high of 17,266 this year. It has raised $515 million of a $600 million capital campaign that started in 2013. "Applications to UConn reached a record high of 34,019 this year, and undergraduate enrollment is at 23,407, nearly double 2001's 13,251. During that time, Uconn's endowment jumped from $165 million to $384 million. How much of these figures at either school can be attributed to athletic success is impossible to say, but it certainly hasn't hurt, even if the teams themselves mostly lose money."

Objectively, what other factors could be contributing to the jump at both of these institutions?

Winning basketball!! Tv exposure , great recipe!!
Not only increases applications, tuition goes up. My daughter was looking at uconn for the nursing program and the tuition went up 5k during the time she applied and time she was accepted. She settled on a honors nursing program at Worcester state for about 30k less per year and by the way ranked higher than uconn, BC and Northeasterns program . Sofor some, it means nothing

Does a winning NCAA team have implications? Absolutely. Do the numbers you show convince me of that? Not really. Our basketball team and athletic department isn't on the radar nationally but we received 57,433 apps last year. Increases in apps has to do with the increase in students applying to multiple schools and outside of the region they are from imo.

UMaine's jump is because it is now matching an applicant's state of resident's in-state state university's tuition rate. Last year Maine had unfilled positions in its class. This year it has a wait list!

This year it has a wait list! Still seems decent given that UMass, UNH, UVM, UConn, Penn State, Pitt and Rutgers are considered better schools.

All schools try to leverage their strengths to increase exposure and attract applicants. Villanova clearly sees athletics as an important piece in strengthening the school overall, while other schools don't. Given HC's history, the admin was foolish to downplay athletics to the extent they did but that mentality has changed so I'm optimistic moving forward. We shall see.
