A bizarre story developed early this morning outside Valhalla CC in Louisville. There was some sort of bus accident in which someone was killed. Scottie Scheffler apparently tried to get around the stopped traffic to get to the course although it would appear that the round had already been delayed. A police officer on the scene may have leapt onto his vehicle. Scheffler was charged with a felony and a couple of misdemeanors but quickly released and made his tee time. I think that KY75 will have to be our special correspondent to cover this story. www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/40162983/scottie-scheffler-detained-police-prior-start-pga-championship

Other golfers with later tee times, still faced with unmoving traffic, were spotted walking nearly a mile to the entrance of the course in the rain. Good thing police had the situation under control and locking the whole thing down. KY was a dangerous place with the ruthless Scheffler on the loose.

Prediction: every one of these charges, with the possible exception of a minor motor vehicle citation, will be dismissed. Without knowing all the facts, the charge of assault is really surprising.

There are significant restrictions for traffic near Valhalla during the tournament with attendees parking very far away and taking shuttles. Maybe that’s the case in all golf tournament as I’m guessing the courses don’t have parking spaces to accommodate tens of thousands of cars. You’d think the tournament organizers would find a way for the golfers to get there easily. Louisville has done a good job in the past for the Ryder Cup and a couple of PGA’s.
Maybe the congestion was caused by the crush of people trying to get to the course for the opportunity to see Tiger Woods tie the laces on his golf shoes.😊
Update: I’m hearing the congestion was caused by a traffic accident with a fatality

It had a PGA logo on it to identify him as a player/official that is supposed to have access to the facility. When I covered the USA Amateur at Brookline about ten plus years ago, I had a special parking pass to get on the course. At this type of event, the same type of thing would be going on and pedestrians would be shuttled around.

With a traffic fatality, the police would lock everything down because they probably need the state police reconstruction team to come in and do their thing. Kind of standard. Reports are that players were being allowed to drive onto the course. Either the police office did not realize Scheffler was a player or Scheffler did not think he was being waved through in a timely fashion. Scheffler is saying he misunderstood the police officer's instructions

Probably the officer’s accent was hard to understand?😉😂

I always dread those situations with the flashing lights, crush of traffic, the route forward compressed or diverted and trying to figure out verbal and hand signal directions from officers. I'll give Scottie a Mulligan unless video shows he purposely dragged the officer clinging to his car.

Did you see the Brady, Robert Kraft or Jonathan Kraft houses from the course? I don't think so. There are very few houses you see from the course. None of them had a sign that said "Tom Brady lives here"

The former Pine Manor College, an abuttor, sold Tom and Giselle a couple of acres to increase their lot size and help stabilize the college finances. That may have been when former HC AD Dick Reagan was Pine Manor's CFO.

Scheffler is saying he misunderstood the police officer's instructions Or he thought he was supposed to drive around the stopped lineup (perhaps misinterpreting the detective's hand signals in the dark and this (driving around stopped traffic) may have been something the players in courtesy cars ordinarily do to get on the course early AM). Given the fatality an hour earlier involving an auto and a pedestrian security guard, there may be a lighting issue. We'll see. In any case, Scheffler was apparently wise enough to comply once he realized what was going on and has been saying all the right things regarding law enforcement.

I believe they used Putterham Meadows as a parking lot for the US Open. The CC is a great course, but nothing related to it was designed with the spectator in mind.

They had all kinds of off site parking arrangements. Including free parking at Riverside and free shuttles from the nearest T station (you still had to pay for the train)

Lynch Municipal Golf Course. Played there a bunch in the 80's. Got a lot of damage during the 88 Open, but got a drainage system in return as well as the repairs to the torn up areas,

Agreed, but don't think the damage was as extensive as in 88. The cars were parked in area that often was a bit waterlogged, but my memory could be faulty. I think the biggest boost for Putterham was the 2nd hand equipment that the got donated from TCC/USGA after the events where they provided parking, and some cash to makeup for lost rounds.
