Very informative. Had planned to attend Admiral Stavridis' speech but couldn't make it.
This newsletter is great. Would appreciate your posting future ones for those of us who are not members but have an interest.

Thanks for posting! Of the ten graduating officers, I wonder how many were from Holy Cross, and how many were from one of the other participating schools (Worcester State and Brown).

Hmmm, Chu, there might have been a war going on in your day. And, uh, a draft, that might have encouraged some to decide they'd rather be officers than buck privates!

Thanks, hc6774 ! That is a lot fewer than I remember participating when I was in school. Yes nationally numbers are down... scholarships go wanting from the 1000 Navy/Marine available each year see Pete Daly's '77 comments in the newsletter about shrinking fleet & limited capacity to rebuild

Hmmm, Chu, there might have been a war going on in your day. And, uh, a draft, that might have encouraged some to decide they'd rather be officers than buck privates! If memory serves... In my era through spring1967, when enrolled in college, the draft was deferred by local draft boards. IIRC only the Army used the draft during this period. It could be avoided by enlisting in the other branches including reserve units*. Later I think the Marines used draftees. I returned to HC in the fall of '71 as the NROTC aviation/freshman instructor. In Sept. the draft law was changed to phase it out over 2 years using the lottery system. 38 freshmen (class of '75) enrolled in Naval Orientation a 1 semester/no credit course. Following the lottery in Feb '72 this group had dwindled by half. In fall '72 about 12 enrolled in my NO course; after the lottery 8 continued in the NROTC program. * At least one classmate enlisted in the Navy Reserve as much for the weekend pay as to avoid the draft. In his very entertaining published memoir, he details his journey to becoming a Navy fighter pilot/flight surgeon. PM me if you want more.
