One or both of these new options would have small conference automatic qualifiers needing to win a First Four game to enter the Field of 68 Cue the P.L

We should all just resign ourselves to the fact that everything good in sports is going to be ruined at some point.

I love play-in rounds. HC M&W have NCAA victories in the last decade due to play-in rounds.

According to the article, the additional teams come from adding play jn games with 10 seeds and 12 seeds.
If the number of teams goes to 72, I have to think that's not bad news for the PL if done the same way as it's now being done for the 11s. 6 10s, 6 11s and 6 12s (plus of course 6 16s, which does affect the PL at times)
Question is how is it done if they settle on 76 teams.

They announce it with 76 trombones? I like any arrangement that ends up with an even 64 when the main tournament play begins. It's a very orderly process once the field is winnowed to 64.

In the eyes of the general public, the field is the 64 teams they can fill in in their bracket.

While the number 64, like 32 and 16 before it makes for simplest brackets without the “play in games” (PIGS) or “First Four” to take a little of the stigma away, the number might be less important than selecting the truly best and deserving teams without slanting the field for the power conferences.
But, that’s never going to happen.

I'm anticipating a proposal for mid majors to play their league tournaments a week earlier than the big boys and then have a qualifying tournament of some sort to fill the (fairly, hopefully) negotiated number of slots for mid-major at large teams, with league champs continuing to earn auto-bids.
If you just go by rankings, there won't be many mid-major at large teams. And if you eliminate auto bids you kill the golden goose this tournament has become.
