Coach Alfonso announced the recruiting class for track and XC. The first name was Khalil Antoine from New Haven who won the New Balance Nationals in the high jump at 7’2 1/2 and the triple jump in 51’6 1/4”. To say that this is extraordinary would be an understatement. Those marks were substantially better than anyone in the PL last year and, if performed at the NCAA East Regional would have advanced him to Eugene for the championships.
I’ll look through the rest later but this is exciting news.

Nice to see a list of HC recruits in track and field - as we have long seen in fb and hoops. This is a sign things may be looking up in the near future in T+F. I agree that getting a talent like Khalil is an amazing "get."

And of the women, 8 of 12 are from Massachusetts. The recruiting budget must be very low.

Here he is after that spectacular double win at New Balance in June: www.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=3689&do=videos&video_id=395610Must be an interesting recruiting story. I've seen high school Field (as in T&F) superstars head to a wide variety of schools...especially jumpers who set eye-catching marks (7+, 50+, etc.) somewhat late (not sure this is even the case here) ...but never to Holy Cross.

It is amazing that we were able to attract this athlete who surely was pursued by the top track teams in the country. He may well deliver 10 points in every track meet

You have identified the big issue in track recruiting. Some kids really take off senior year. As you can see below, he went from a very good state level championship athlete to a national champion in a season. www.athletic.net/athlete/26119884/track-and-field/high-school

This is an amazing ‘get’ for our track program. There has to be a story there ! Congrats to coach Alfonso - We will have to provide first class indoor facilities for Khalil to work on his craft through the cold weather months - is the indoor football surface in the Luth good enough ?

Fred Rom has held the indoor record since 1972 at 2.13 meters= approx 7 1&3/4.I'm guessing we did use feet and inches at that time. Mark Schroeder jumped the same height outdoors in 1978 to set that record

Small aside...the best high jumper I ever saw was Franklin Jacobs who cleared 8'1/4" That is not the mark that may never be broken, it is jumping higher than his height by 2 feet, 4 1/4 inches...since Franklin Jacobs was only 5'8" tall. I saw him jump at New Milford High School in New Jersey. He did not attend NMHS, but was coached there by Bill Monahan who was the NM track coach.

Here is an article from the CT Insider about Khalil being named Connecticut Gatorade Athlete in track Hillhouse High School's Khalil Antoine named Connecticut's Gatorade Track and field player of yearBy Dan Nowak,Staff WriterJune 27, 2024Gatorade, in its 39th year of honoring the nation’s most elite high school athletes, announced the award Thursday. Antoine is the fourth Hillhouse student athlete to win the award for boys track, joining Gary Moore Jr. (2022), Terrell Wilks (2007) and Glenn McFadden (2001). The award, which celebrates the nation’s top high school athletes for excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community, distinguishes Antoine as Connecticut’s best high school boys track and field player, according to the release from Gatorade. The 6-foot-5, 165-pound senior jumper won national championships in the high jump and triple jump this past season at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor. Antoine set a state record with his winning high jump of 7 feet, 2.25 inches, which ranked No. 2 nationally among prep boys competitors this spring. His winning leap of 51-6.25 in the triple jump also ranked No. 2 nationally, while his season-best time of 14.10 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles ranked No. 95.Antoine earned New Balance All-American status in the high jump and triple jump as a result of his New Balance National wins. He did not compete in the CIAC Class L meet championships due to a conflict with his prom, thus not qualifying to compete in the State Open.Antoine has volunteered locally as an usher at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, and he has donated his time as a youth track official.“Antoine won a pair of national championships in the triple jump and high jump this season at the New Balance meet—both distances ranking No. 2 in the nation among prep boys competitors this spring," said Rich Gonzalez, editor of PrepCalTrack, in the Gatorade release. “Athletes who can exceed 51 feet in the triple jump and clear over 7-2 in the high jump don’t come along very often. For good measure, he clocked a U.S. Top 100 time in the 110 hurdles at the Southern Connecticut Conference Outdoor Championships, where he took silver in that event in addition to winning his two signature jumps."According to Gatorade's release, Antoine has maintained a 4.27 weighted GPA in the classroom. He has signed a national letter of intent to compete at the College of the Holy Cross this fall. The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field. The program awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.Antoine joins recent Gatorade Connecticut Boys Track & Field Players of the Year Joshua Mooney (2022-23, Stonington High School), Gavin Sherry (2020-21, Conard High School) and Sean Dixon-Bodie (2019-20, Bloomfield High School), among the state’s list of former award winnersHere is a video I found on Twitter of him clearing 7 feet indoors x.com/BConn63/status/1764090017909977573

I’ll bet others are thinking what I’m thinking: can we give him a shot at wide receiver?
