Great story. I remember Sid Catlett from his college days but was not familiar with the high school story in the piece. The anecdote about K A-J and the tape of Catlett's father is really heartwarming.

That DeMatha-Power game was one for the ages. I (and many others) never thought DeMatha could win that one.

I ordered a biography of "Lew Alcindor" from the Scholastic Book Club when I was about ten years old. I recall that it discussed his Power Memorial team traveling to play Dematha at University of Maryland. The book mentioned in passing that he called himself Kareem Abdul Jabbar and had converted to Islam, but really downplayed its significance---like it was a phase he was going through.
