NU is my other alma mater, although I do not follow its teams. Still, I'd have to pull for the Huskies over the other teams in the tournament

Aside from perhaps the NFL draft and the NBA ASG, the Beanpot is probably the most "ovahrated" event on the yearly sports calendar.

What makes you say that? I've never like this particular tournament because of the disproportionate amount of media coverage it gets in greater Boston relative to other college sporting events that are more meaningful in my opinion. A big part of the reason I find it overrated is because 3/4 teams participating are Hockey East schools who already play each other multiple times in the regular season in addition to potential match-ups in the Hockey East playoffs and/or NCAA. It's basically a glorified exhibition compared to the Hockey East Semifinals and Finals at TD Garden, NCAA regional games or even the hard-fought conference games played between these schools. Yet it gets 10X the buzz and media coverage. If you were Northeastern, would you rather beat BU in the Beanpot (which counts for nothing other than a non-conference win and at-large brownie points) or in a conference game (in which a win would still give you the at-large brownie points), which would you choose? Also, since three of the schools playing are from Hockey East, why not add a little juice to the Beanpot and make the All-HE semifinal game (there as to be one) count as a conference game for those schools? Not only would this add to the excitement of the tournament but would open up an OOC game for each of the two schools playing.

Not only would this add to the excitement of the tournament but would open up an OOC game for each of the two schools playing. The tournament went for 22 years (1995-2016) with only BU and BC winning; plus they played each other in the finals 11 of those years (the finalists and "consolationists" are matched up in the first round the next year; if it were done by record, that "11" would probably be more like 16 or 17). Has probably had an effect on attendance and interest. Nice that Hahvad and NU have won the last two. I would agree that they should designate one of the two first round games as a conference game; especially since the tournament is no longer at the old Garden with its relatively tiny ice surface. Means that the teams don't play each other over and over and over again. There are a couple of depressing side notes to the tournament; the first round has been for the last several years the day after the Super Bowl and, at least for me, it sucks when football is over. Also, it's exactly mid-winter and the weather is on the average terrible.

Among the many things we go on and on about here is the lack of interest college kids have in the teams at their own schools. The Garden had thousands of kids in their college's colors yelling like crazy the other night. Shouldn't that make us happy? The players celebrated like they had won the national championship. Isn't that great?

Isn't that great? Good point - the Beanpot has always been a big draw for students at the schools involved. But I always had the impression that it is more of just a huge party with the hockey game as a backdrop. CORTACA is a lot of fun too in that sense (SUNY Cortland v. Ithaca College football for those who don't know) but the Central New York media isn't jamming it down everyone's throats for a week like it's the Super Bowl.
I'll rephrase my point -- from a PURIST sports fan perspective, the Beanpot is overhyped. From a school spirit perspective it certainly is a hallowed tradition that should continue on. I just think they should do something to make the games 'count' for more, i.e. incorporate one of the semifinals into the Hockey East schedule and standings. The way it's set up now is like if Holy Cross played BU in basketball for the Turnpike Trophy but that game didn't count in the PL standings, and we still played two PL games against them on top of that.

Name me a regular season college tournament that is better in any sport. The Northeast is a college hockey haven. The BU vs BC hockey rivalry is one of the best in college sports!

Is it really? I had not noticed. Doesn't "college sports" include more than Boston or even New England?

A great rivalry it is. If only the Beanpawt counted for as much as the other 4-5 times these schools could potentially play each other during the course of a college hockey regular and post season. There really are no great regular season tourneys left in any sport. Used to love the Preseason NIT. That's a great one that bit the dust at least in its old format.
