Will you give to HC this year?

I don't give because of the mascot; I give because of the school.

I find myself still undecided, as I generally give for the same reason as breezy, but find this whole affair so distasteful that I may not this year.

I have not failed to give - even when they rejected my older son who had to "settle" for being an honor student at Fairfield.
On this one I am leaning toward bbc. It is not the mascot that upsets me, but the way in which this entire matter was handled...as in mishandled. I feel that in siding with a small number off militant students and faculty, I am being told that I (and my opinion) do not matter. If that is the case, perhaps my money does not matter either. Not a huge amount in the grand scheme of things (even if large to my wife and me), it is the principle of the thing that is large. I could care less about our Iggy (as in Marvin the Martian look-alike), but the symbols that are being stripped away to please some who have apparently hated them for some time. Perhaps those people will now increase their donations to make up for what their actions have cost HC.

Fr B does attend a smattering of games. But as an insider once told me compared to him fr brooks looks like Dick Vitale.

I don’t have that tenure of support or likely the level of giving “clout” that KY ‘75 has but his sentiment rings pretty true and is likely where I end up on this topic.

I gave last December, my giving is often sequenced for tax purposes.

Regardless of whether I gave / will give or not, the matter of the depiction of the mascot is secondary to a larger issue of whether Holy Cross is sufficiently Catholic or sufficiently Jesuit.

IMO, not supporting HC because of the loss of the mascot is really a statement about not supporting HC because one doesn't agree with the direction of the college, and, writ large, the direction of the Jesuits. HC, and TPTB, are acting consistent with the edicts of the general congregations of the Society of Jesus for the last 40-50 years.

The matter of William Blatty's (author of the Exorcist) and the Cardinal Newman Society 's effort to strip Georgetown of its Catholic and Jesuit identity has been well-chronicled in the local press. Blatty recently died, and the Vatican bureaucracy can read the tea leaves during the tenure of a Jesuit Pope. ----So the effort has faded away.

As I recall, the petition (really a brief) submitted to the Vatican was hundreds of pages in length, citing many examples of transgressions whose cumulative level necessitated, in their view, stripping Georgetown of its Catholic and Jesuit identity.

And IIRC, at least one Jesuit at Georgetown joined in the petition.

(Note also that it was the NCR that published the Vatican's reply to Blatty and his fellow petitioners. The NCR was probably sympathetic to the petitioners.)

I have always felt very good about giving and proud of being part of an alumni group where over half of all alumni give to their alma mater, a very impressive statistic. Anyone else feel this way? Do you feel differently now?
