Good for him. He is moving up. Why hasn’t Howard just hired him yet? I wonder whether the Howard head coaching job would entail a pay cut for an assistant at Pitt.

Absolutely astonishing that Kevin Nickelberry continues on at Howard. In eight years, he's 74-172, with seven 20+-loss seasons, and one finish above 8th in the MEAC.

Hey, Howard probably thinks that's good. In the seven years before Nickelberry arrived they had gone 48-163. The only serious explanation I can think of as to why he is still there is that in his fifth year, they went 16-16, including a 10-6 league record, and maybe that was enough for their AD to foolishly give him another five years. If that were the case, I doubt Howard would want to eat two years of salary.

We don't know all the in's and outs of the Howard situation..Perhaps, and i'm just guessing, the school LIKES the way the overall program is being run, and is more concerned about the student than the athlete....

That may well be. However, my guess is it's also the amazing indifference to Athletics at that school, which has the financial wherewithal--unlike many HBCUs--to be an athletic powerhouse, not just in the MEAC, but regionally as well. Howard has an endowment that has been estimated anywhere between $575 and $650 million, either of which would almost double that of the next-highest HBCU, Spelman College in Atlanta. I get that the school has other more significant problems with which it has to deal at present--starting with the alleged embezzlement of financial aid money by a handful of administrators, which led to a week-long occupation of one of the school's administration buildings this month. But they've never given a damn about athletics dating back to when Howard's basketball and football teams were I-AA powers.

Or maybe they value continuity and see progress on the court. Nickelberry had a very young team this year, and after a terrible non-conf season plus an 0-4 start in the MEAC, they found their footing a bit to get to 7-9 in the league. In a lot of ways, the trajectory of their season and their future outlook mirrors ours. I doubt Nickelberry got another 5-year contract, but somewhere along the way they must have worked out an extension.

In 2016-17, Howard had a veteran team and was picked to win the MEAC - finished 10-24 (5-11), 11th in the conference. I think 137's explanation makes the most sense - school is probably on the hook for at least a couple more years and can't afford a buyout.

I'm not defending anyone. I'm searching for an explanation as to why KN still has that job. Stop putting words in my mouth.

NJJ what's the latest on Gasperini? One of our posters said he was back on the court working out with the guys a week or so ago when Jacob Boonyasith was on his official visit. As I will say a hundred times between now and opening night...we're cautiously optimistic.
